What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

Kendal mint cake

lotusbell · 16/10/2019 07:03

@Scarlett555, DS12 loves these but aren't they expensive now? Tiny portion of not that nice fish these days (last one I had was a bit gristly) and birds eye don't do them anymore, just Youngs or supermarket own

HolyGuac · 16/10/2019 07:19

Sandwich spread, it's getting harder to find in the supermarket, in that it's there but they keep moving which section it lives in.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/10/2019 08:16

Accountant222 - Was that polish Silvo (like Brasso) or Duraglit?

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/10/2019 08:20

I have never switched from bar soap to gel - have always used Nivea soap which I find the best (£1 for 3 bars from Home Bargains). Also used to love Nivea shampoo and conditioner which you used to be able to buy in Spain or France. No longer available.

I still have the tinned chicken in white sauce with rice when I haven't felt well. A bit put off now because the chicken seems to come from Brazil, but hey .....

Chilled corn beef, with mash and peas for Saturday lunch.

As a child, my 'treat' was a couple of spoonfuls of cocoa powder mixed with caster sugar which I used to eat dry!! Can't imagine why but it was nice.

SlightlyWizened · 16/10/2019 08:55

Powder Daz in a big box here. Thats a good tip about a lidded container for it, I'll need to keep an eye out for one big enough.
I use Wrights Coal Tar soap as although the coal tar is no longer in it it's still the only soap that doesn't irritate my delicate parts.
Leaf tea-PG tips although it's in strange little granules actually.

ClaudiaSchiffersUglySister · 16/10/2019 09:59

My mum has always used soap and a flannel, followed by Nivea creme. Works well for her.

Vosene shampoo can be used as a face/body wash if like me you have very clogged skin.

I like unscented Dove bar for washing my hands and lathering up to shave my legs.

It’s harder to find washing powder tablets now. I use Persil non-bio tablets (directly in the drum) for easy dosing. Plus a bag of soap nuts so I only need one tablet. Loose powder is too messy as I’m quite clumsy. White vinegar diluted in water as fabric conditioner.
All the liquids/gels/capsules just make the machine manky, which kind of defeats the point, so none of that rubbish in my new washing machine! Washing towels/bedding on 60° helps gives the machine a good clear out I think.

I’m very partial to a hot yeast extract drink, usually to go with my boiled eggs. Meridian does one with no added salt. Yum.

Tinned sardines and mackerel. Either plain or in tomato sauce. Good with butter beans and a drizzle of olive oil.

Tinned fruit in juice.

Epsom salts, bicarb, Dead Sea salt for lovely mineral bath.

Wombleish · 16/10/2019 10:42

Most commercial bar soap is also made with palm oil. It's usually listed as sodium palmate or stadium palm kernelate, as that's what it becomes when it's been saponified. I prefer to buy small batch, handmade cold processed soap from eBay.

WingDefence · 16/10/2019 10:48

Collis Brown medicine. It's for dodgy tummies and sickness. It has morphine in! It is a weird brown colour that you dilute with warm water and it tastes minty. Really hard to get nowadays - in fact I bet the bottle I have downstairs is out of date :(

30not13 · 16/10/2019 10:51

Regular buys in my household are

Ruffles (poundshop)
Bar soap ( trendy now though!)
Ground semolina or flaked rice for milk puddings
Touch of silver shampoo
Vitapoint if I can find it ( hair cream that tames wispy bits)
Star drops that you dilute yourself
Brillo pads with the pink soap in
Supernoodles
Tinned macaroni pudding

30not13 · 16/10/2019 10:52

Oh and Heinz sandwich spread, lemon curd and chicken and ham or sardine or crab sandwich pastes

HowlsMovingBungalow · 16/10/2019 10:54

I buy soap made from tallow.
Use Flannels.
Fly papers (look grim when up but do the job of catching the pests)
Lard/Suet

Bloomburger · 16/10/2019 11:01

Milton tablets. Down the loo, bleaching school shirts and dish clothes. People look at me like I'm a complete loon when I say anything about doing it.

PigletJohn · 16/10/2019 11:02

(somewhat off-topic)

if you use soap powder and it goes hard or lumpy, it's probably damp. Most often this is due to a small leak into the cupboard under the sink

LittleAndOften · 16/10/2019 11:11

Lime marmalade. It only ever came out on Saturdays when I was growing up, as a special treat! I treat myself now and again but it's not always easy to find.

PrivateSpidey · 16/10/2019 11:21

I remarked to the striplings behind the counter that I didn’t think they would be old enough to know what Caramac was
Grin

PrivateSpidey · 16/10/2019 11:23

MilkTray
The green ginger wine is made by Stone's.

MotherWol · 16/10/2019 11:29

@redeyetonowheregood Morrisons sell Green Split Peas in the whole foods section, although sometimes they go out of stock for ages. Failing that, Hodmedods sell them online.

Kazzyhoward · 16/10/2019 11:38

Mr Kipling treacle tart. None of our local supermarkets stock it (Asda, Morrisons, Booths, Tesco), so it's a drive to the next town to their Sainsbury who are the only store I've ever found who still sell it, and they have the best range of other MrKipling cakes etc too!

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 16/10/2019 12:32

Omg I adore treacle tart Smile

CMOTDibbler · 16/10/2019 12:48

Now I am going to have to make treacle tart! My mum used to make queen of puddings which I adored and you never see that these days.

Milton tablets will also rescue tomato stained tupperware and stained flasks/reusable cups

LBOCS2 · 16/10/2019 12:51

On the other hand I don't use gravy granules or gravy browning. I use the meat juices!

Well obviously; that's how you make gravy. But chicken gravy (particularly) can be extremely anaemic and benefits from the teeniest drop of gravy browning. Tastes the same, looks better :)

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 16/10/2019 13:10

CMOTDibbler - yes, Queen of Puddings! Loved it - I would make it now but DH doesn't like hot puddings! I do make lemon meringue pie and a big bakewell tart sometimes and they are nice!

My mother also made stewed apple and custard and a wonderful rice pudding with nice thick skin on top!!

dairymilkmonster · 16/10/2019 13:14

Well, virtually everyone round here claims to be sugar, carb, nut, meat, dairy etc free in one shape or form. And on,y drink water.

I still buy everything i always have...

I buy angel delight and tinned fruit.
Little potted trifles. They aren't that nice, but remind me of my greatgran.
Who buys those dry tasteless sponge tart cases near the custard/angel delight section? Are they actually food?

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 16/10/2019 13:36

L'aimont skin perfume - has to be the pink skin perfume, not the spray.

Buy it for my mum for Christmas, she loves it and doesn't use any other Smile
