What do you still buy that you're convinced no one else still does?

Title may have been a slight exaggeration, but is there anything you continue to purchase ( be it groceries, cleaning products, home bits etc) that is maybe seen as outdated, useless, old fashioned or just generally unliked by the masses , that you continue to buy?

Mine is Fisherman's Friend. I love them but have never found anyone else who still buys them!

Time40 my grandma used a non steam iron until she passed away 5 years ago. A really old heavy iron thingy, heating it on the hob! We got her a couple of proper modern irons over the years but she refused to use them. I’ve never seen better ironed clothes from anywhere else not even dry cleaners or posh hotels! She was the only person in the world I trusted to iron my delicate fabric wedding dress.

I see mentions of ink cartridges and raise you ink in bottles. I have many colours! Smile

I use lots of things previously listed and especially happy so many fellow atora suet lovers; particularly good made into dumplings and served with lamb casserole and pearl barley Grin

MadisonAvenue re violet cashews and the 'sort of perfume flavour ones' - long ago and far away in the fifties I had a Saturday morning job in a sweet shop. There was a small basket of the things on the counter and every now and then a gentleman would stroll in, help himself to a few and chat with the staff. I was told their purpose was to disguise any taint of alcohol on the man's breath before returning home to his wife Grin

About the same era I remember my mum boiling hankies in a pan reserved just for that job, but she always added salt to the water as that cut any mucus stone dead, then the hankies could go in with the regular wash.

I don't use either of the above but can relate to lots on this thread - bar soap and boil in the bag kippers to name but two!

Malt loaf

SamBeckett · 15/10/2019 20:56

@smemorata I have a stove top for the same reason plus when the grill is on I can put it on there to warm or if the heating is on I stand it on the radiator to warm .

Soap makers ; Am I missing something here ? you say I just need a bain marie and some essential oils / colour but what do you use for the soap ? do you just melt a shop bought block or can I buy raw / unprocessed or what ever it is called soap ?

Stumpedasatree · 15/10/2019 20:56

Bar soap always. Semolina to make from scratch. Ambrosia macaroni pudding in the tin. Also tinned fruit cocktail and Birds custard powder.

Re washing powder:- I wish they'd sell it with better packaging, a better lid. Or something. Mine always gets great lumpy blocks of powder so quickly that's annoying to break up.

notso · 15/10/2019 21:09

Andrews Liver Salts is another one I always have in stock - no idea what it's meant to do but I always take it when I'm nauseous!
Grin As kids my sister and I used to drink this on weekend mornings before our parents got up to see who could do the loudest burp!

Mine is proper bread in a loaf that you cut. I don't know anyone outside my family that doesn't buy sliced from the supermarket.

Michaelbaubles · 15/10/2019 21:15

MilkTrayLimeBarrel you can get about five different types of pink Camay at Poundstretcher - 29p a bar last time I went!

redeyetonowheregood · 15/10/2019 21:17

Green split peas. I can't find them in the shops where I live in Norfolk so have had to start ordering online.

SunshineAngel · 15/10/2019 21:17

@Scarlett555 I bought these the other day after not having seen them since my childhood. My partner was a bit bemused, but absolutely loved them when they were done!

Mrsjayy · 15/10/2019 21:26

Aww my Great Aunt used to give the girls in our family Camay soap for Christmas i didnt realise you could still get it.

Accountant222 · 15/10/2019 21:39

Bisto gravy powder, not the instant gravy, the silver polish in the blue tin

Stravapalava · 15/10/2019 21:40

@historysock - I have Bovril on toast too! It's lovely with an egg on top.

Phalarope · 15/10/2019 22:01

I’m worried the manufacturers are phasing our washing powder - haven’t been able to get Persil Colour for months. Whites bio or nothing.

Weedinosaurus · 15/10/2019 22:05

Vienetta for after Sunday lunch Smile

MrsDilligaf · 15/10/2019 22:09

Compton's Gravy Salt. I used to use Burdalls but that's long since disappeared.

Washing powder in a box - so much better than liquids or pods. It lasts ages and I'm slowly converting my friends.

Hot water bottles. The only rooms we have the heating on in are the lounge and bathroom (unless it's really REALLY baltic then I'll put it on in the bedrooms)

White vinegar for cleaning the windows.

Spray starch is brilliant stuff

Flannels for washing your face instead of those bloody wet wipe things.

It's dead trendy now to be going all old school but its stuff I've done for decades - life skills from my Granny Smile

shinynewapple · 15/10/2019 22:11

A lot of these

Never stopped using bar soap - have found all the 'eco ' threads by posters just discovering them quite hilarious!

Cloth hankies - they go on a hot wash with towels.

Boil in the bag Cod in sauce and kippers

Sandwich spread and salad cream

Tinned macaroni cheese, tinned potatoes and fish like sardines, mackerel

My mom also used to make those fruit flans if she was having a 'gathering ' and vol-au-vents with condensed soup filling. Also the condensed soup as pasta sauce.

I transfer mine to a plastic bucket with a lid as soon as I open a new packet. An old Hellman's mayonnaise bucket from a restaurant kitchen. Never gets damp.

My OH buys the TV mag every week without fail... never understood it. We have sky, you can get the schedule for free!

Buunylover · 15/10/2019 22:37

Bar's of soap, raspberry ruffles, love them but they make me cough! Creamed mushrooms, vesta curry, marrow fat peas.
