Good God Extinction Rebellion blocking a funeral hearse.

I know where they are coming from but for the love of God you dont block and/or lie under a funeral hearse. FGS think of the relatives and friends of the deceased and how they are feeling.

Unfuckingreal!

The thing is companies like Thames Water should be being asked "what are you doing to make sure it doesnt happen again" The amount of plastic bottles that got into the eco system because of their failure was astronomical yet................radio silence.

Bloody hell. WTF?

Dyrne · 07/10/2019 22:25

Extinction Rebellion’s own website states:

In order to limit warming to 1.5ºC recommended by the IPCC report, global net CO2 emissions need to decline by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030. Despite initial progress on cutting its carbon emission, the UK will miss legal climate targets without urgent action.

Digging into these facts a little deeper shows that the UK mets its Carbon targets in the first 2 sections (2008-2012 and 2013-2017); is on track to meet the 3rd target (2018-2022); but is in danger of missing the 4th.(2023-2027).

Now, this is important, and we need to step up to make sure we can meet this target by the deadline; as well as put pressure on our allies to deliver the same reduction.

Now, where did I find out all this information? Oh, turns out there are already agencies holding the government to account; doing it in measurable way, and publishing the performance indicators at regular intervals: www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/CCC-2019-Progress-Report-to-Parliament-Infographic.pdf

Now, I find that a hell of a lot more informative and less scaremongering than Extinction Rebellion screeching “WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!”

Combine that with the report I shared earlier and boom, we’ve got a plan. Let’s all write to our MPs expressing our concerns over the CCC’s latest report; and endorsing the suggestions made by the Green Alliance; and asking what moves are being made to get back on track to hit our 2023-2027 emissions target.

... anyone?

Or... just superglue yourself to a car. That might work, too Wink

Buttybach · 07/10/2019 22:29

I get where they are coming from but some of their methods suck ass!
In Cardiff they held up all the roundabouts cycling round and round for 40 minutes. This meant lots of cars and vans idling on the roundabout and the emissions were visible. One of them was a bloke who was stark bollock naked and painted blue.. on a bike! My 8 year old was horrified! No one wants to see a smurfy todger on repeat going round and round

Dyrne · 07/10/2019 22:36

The trouble is, how many of these protesters will want to do the boring bit of tracking statistics and holding the government to account? The fact is, the government will just write off these protesters as left wing nut jobs just out to cause trouble. (Our lovely PM has already called them “Crusties”...)

How many of these protesters will go home, and probably do nothing else in terms of driving Government led change... what have they actually achieved other than the feeling that they’ve done some sort of nebulous something

I absolutely think we need to challenge the government to do more... I just wish there was a bit more information and sensible suggestions amongst all the “RAAAH!!!!”.

HelenaDove · 07/10/2019 23:40

Like I said, people seem to be in total denial about the reality of what we are facing. Are you really claiming that a few days of delay to work, zero hours or no

And......................................there it is. Working class people on zero hours who for them losing money might not be able to pay their rent are the collateral damage as usual. Not the companies whose lack of investment in the infrastructure causes a massive problem where loads of plastic bottles of water have to be given out The reaction to that is WTF but the reaction to the person trying to get to work is Suck it up.

Frogsoup you need a name change on here May i suggest.................Bertrand Zobrist

To be honest they annoy me. They cause everyday people going about their business stress. I am glad I don't live in London and have to travel across Trafalgar Square each day. They vandalise buildings, seeming not to care that more resources will have to be used to rectify their damage. They have been told they can have a citizens assembly who can advise but not control government. The UK has promised to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 which is best of the G8 countries yet still they whinge on. They interviews one woman who said she had cut back to only one holiday involving a flight each year. Well I don't fly at all, don't use single use plastic or let my children either, we use a reusable water bottle and reusable cup and avoid unnecessary car journeys too but I don't lecture those that don't and I won't take lectures from her. I hope they are all arrested and have a criminal record for their efforts. They need to focus on each person doing their own bit for the environment and bringing their children up to do the same not lecturing those who do more than they do and making other peoples lives more difficult. What happens when an ambulance or fire engine can't get past and someone dies?

HelenaDove · 08/10/2019 00:21

Last time i was on a plane was 1983 The previous time was 1977 Both times i was a child so it was out of my control.

Glad to find my people here, Frog , Muddler et al.
If people took just a moment to find out about XR, information on working principles and the 3 demands is in the public domain, easily googlable, so much of this stuff could be avoided. In the same way that Greta urges world leaders to unite behind science (and isn't prescribing specific solutions), XR is only calling for the government to declare a climate emergency (came swiftly on the heels of, and as a direct result of, the April rebellion, Dyrne), to act now, to act as if the truth is real, and as a result of this create Citizens' Assemblies where randomly selected representative groups of members of the public go through a process of evaluating scientific evidence, and propose solutions to the climate breakdown and associated problems. It is not for XR to insist on specific policy or behavioural changes, it is our government which should be encouraged to act in the best interest of the people and facilitate, in the name of a democracy which is fit for purpose, Citizens' Assemblies.

Hopefully those over at Reddit will bother to read the rest of the thread and engage in some critical thinking.

I did NOT realize this was a stunt no but considering there have been warnings about this protest causing disruption + the dangerous stunt with the fire hose last week, AND the attitudes shown towards the low paid who will be struggling to get to work...................well im as jusr surprised as them over at Reddit as they are at me.

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 08/10/2019 02:47

And i never said ANYONE in XR should be shot even though the Reddit thread reads like i have.

If people want to peacefully protest and it doesnt impinge on emergency vehcles getting through or a care worker trying to get to a shift fine.

Because if ANY worker who works in vital services has trouble getting to work., is delayed by this or late and puts something on social media you can bet the papers will very likely jump on it.

The ironic thing that struck me yesterday struggling to get home round their chaos was the thousands of idling vehicle engines forced to wait while they held up all the buses!

TheSerenDipitY · 08/10/2019 03:35

@Tulipcat we had some here in NZ too... they blocked the intersections, made people wait a few red lights before they cleared the intersections, they did this a lot... so people sat waiting for the road to clear for 5 or 10 mins with their engines going... so that one got nothing, others super glued themselves to windows, im sure the chemicals they used to do so and to remove themselves will be a huge help to their cause... and most drove there, some used a bus, some even got on a plane from other cities to get there!!!!!!!
so im not sure what message they are trying to get across to us all other than being an inconvenience to people trying to go about their day because it sure as shit isnt about saving the planet

Dyrne · 08/10/2019 06:18

So I ask AdultHumanFemale ; what do you think setting up Citizens Assemblies will do that the already existing NGOs and government groups aren’t doing already? Why do we need to waste government resources creating yet another group that will question the government? Why are “random members of the public” apparently better qualified to analyse scientific evidence and propose solutions; than the actual Climate Scientists already doing exactly that?

Surely it is far better to throw their weight behind the systems that already exist, with the qualified people that exist there who have been working with the government for years, rather than waste time and resources creating yet another side process which will need to bring people up to speed?

You want the government to “act as if the truth was real” - well, they’ve never ever denied that climate change is a serious issue. Again, this isn’t America where Trump is denying it; we’ve had the Climate Change Act for over 10 years, and the government has already reduced our emissions by over 40% since 1990 levels.

Yes, they need to be pressured to go faster and do more, but having people scream that NOTHING is being done isn’t really helping matters.

I can only imagine that the first thing the Citizens Assembly are going to do is be sat down and be educated on exactly what the government are doing now, the cost of trying to do it any quicker, and the ways where we can pressure the government to move faster. So... exactly what is already being done.

No13 · 08/10/2019 06:23

Even though it was a stunt, I could imagine them doing it. Twats.

AlwaysCheddar · 08/10/2019 06:44

They are closing schools, stopping meals on wheels happening, threatening people, doing f;()big yoga, and blocking traffic. They are creating more diesel fumes and just being a massive pain in the arse. Idiots and stupid twats.

AlwaysCheddar · 08/10/2019 06:45

God help anyone who needs to call 999 ... and best of luck to those attending hospitals for life saving treatments.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 08/10/2019 06:48

Helena, not everything is about zero hours contracts. You feel very strongly about them and rightly so, maybe you can organise your own protest against them?

Also, why don't you address the the posters on different forum over there, makes more sense?

The ironic thing that struck me yesterday struggling to get home round their chaos was the thousands of idling vehicle engines forced to wait while they held up all the buses!

They could have switched off their engines. It's not necessary to keep the engine running while you wait in traffic for along time. That's not the fault of the protesters.

Our Government

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/oct/08/lynton-crosbys-firm-in-illegal-lobbying-inquiry-over-boris-johnson-link

Evidence uncovered by the Guardian in a series of stories this year shows CTF has worked with the Saudi Arabian government, major fossil fuel producers, and anti-cycling campaigners, tobacco firms and sugary drinks producers on campaigns.

“What do they have in place to ensure their representatives, if they’re working with government ministers, stop talking about what their other paying clients are doing? Whether intentionally or inadvertently they may be doing consultant lobbying activity,” said a spokesperson for the Office of the Registrar of Consultant Lobbyists.

leckford · 08/10/2019 07:45

The U.K. needs to improve many things, including too much building, too many humans and too many vehicles, but this won’t achieve anything. It is just annoying normal people.

They need to do this in places like China, India, Africa, Dubai etc. They would not get a favourable reception and the army and police would not be sympathetic.

MoodyBitch · 08/10/2019 08:03

They should just hose them all down with water cannons. They look like they need a good wash anyway.
And a job.

Lowlandlucky · 08/10/2019 08:39

How did all the protesters travel to London ? Must have taken weeks to walk there
