Extinction Rebellion’s own website states:
In order to limit warming to 1.5ºC recommended by the IPCC report, global net CO2 emissions need to decline by about 45% from 2010 levels by 2030. Despite initial progress on cutting its carbon emission, the UK will miss legal climate targets without urgent action.
Digging into these facts a little deeper shows that the UK mets its Carbon targets in the first 2 sections (2008-2012 and 2013-2017); is on track to meet the 3rd target (2018-2022); but is in danger of missing the 4th.(2023-2027).
Now, this is important, and we need to step up to make sure we can meet this target by the deadline; as well as put pressure on our allies to deliver the same reduction.
Now, where did I find out all this information? Oh, turns out there are already agencies holding the government to account; doing it in measurable way, and publishing the performance indicators at regular intervals: www.theccc.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/CCC-2019-Progress-Report-to-Parliament-Infographic.pdf
Now, I find that a hell of a lot more informative and less scaremongering than Extinction Rebellion screeching “WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!”
Combine that with the report I shared earlier and boom, we’ve got a plan. Let’s all write to our MPs expressing our concerns over the CCC’s latest report; and endorsing the suggestions made by the Green Alliance; and asking what moves are being made to get back on track to hit our 2023-2027 emissions target.
... anyone?
Or... just superglue yourself to a car. That might work, too
