Good God Extinction Rebellion blocking a funeral hearse.

I know where they are coming from but for the love of God you dont block and/or lie under a funeral hearse. FGS think of the relatives and friends of the deceased and how they are feeling.

Unfuckingreal!

I KNOW we are in serious shit with climate change.

Why arent they protesting outside schools that are changing their uniforms every 5 minutes. There are many schools who do this v. Fashion WEEK which takes place two weeks a year.

The only way this planet will be saved is if we 100% cut out all consumerism.

Can't see that happening.

I also don't think extinction rebellion are going about it in the right way.

Some people really couldn't care less/have more going on/are too blind sighted/ignorant to make a big enough change.

Also there is only so much a family can do. It's the massive companies that now need to make the changes.

But that won't happen because we all love consumerism.

PancakeAndKeith · 07/10/2019 19:15

You know that chalk figures like that have to be ‘re chalked’ every so often?
It’s not like carving something into Stonehenge. It can be removed.

As said above, this shit is real. I’m assuming most posters on this thread are parents, are you happy for your children and grandchildren to grow up in this shit show of a world? While you are busy looking down your noses at these people what exactly are you doing?

LisaRoundTheMulberryBush · 07/10/2019 19:17

@HelenaDove I guess there's always someone going to be saying that they should focus on this that or something else. We can start our own protests outside schools if we want to. This is what they've decided to do and how they've decided to do it.

Personally I definitely wouldn't have chosen to 'flash art' on a monument from 1812, but the Fail is playing its readers like fiddles with that piece. I suspect the real truth is somewhere in the middle of what each side says.

onalongsabbatical · 07/10/2019 19:17

London will be underwater in your children's or grandchildren's lifetimes.

user764329056 · 07/10/2019 19:17

Changestartsnow, I agree with every word

And whoever stupidly said the protesters are using plastic water bottles, I have been using 1 plastic bottle for nearly a year now so what’s your point?

HelenaDove · 07/10/2019 19:19

I never mentioned the White Horse thing I didnt know anything about it till this thread.

OP posts:
PancakeAndKeith · 07/10/2019 19:20

Why arent they protesting outside schools that are changing their uniforms every 5 minutes.

Because it’s the big businesses that need to change.

As an aside the schools that tend to change their uniforms every week are the ones that are academies, which tend to be owned by big businesses if you follow the money. I gave up trying to bring that up on here years ago because no one seemed to be bothered.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 19:21

Oh I've been using the same platinum water bottle for an alarming amount of tine as well! It's the coffees and fast food that you really notice when you work there.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 19:23

"London will be underwater in your children's or grandchildren's lifetimes"

I've heard this for 25 years. My mum reckons she's heard it for about 60 years.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 19:23

*platinum 😂😂😂😂
Plastic

Autocorrect thinks I'm very rich today!

HelenaDove · 07/10/2019 19:24

Pancake

a. im child free by choice
b. dont use plastic cups re. coffee as i drink coffee at home.

I dont recall any protests about the amount of plastic bottles of water that had to be handed out by Thames Water in early March 2018 when their antiquated pipes failed after the Beast from the East.

I’d have shot them given the chance

For laying down some cloth? Really?

However, they would be more credible as activists if they had realistic proposals.

Dyrne · 07/10/2019 19:26

But the “Demands” of Extinction Rebellion are ludicrous - reducing emissions to net zero by 2025? That’s 5 years away!

I get if you don’t work in industry you don’t really get how long it takes to organise and fund massive changes in infrastructure like this. 5 years just isn’t enough time even to safely decommission some sites, let alone build completely new, emission free ones!

Declaring a climate emergency? The UK government already has done that!

Create a “Citizens assembly”... surely the time, resource and funding it would take setting up yet another government quango would be better spent supporting the departments and initiatives that already exist? There are plenty of NGOs that work closely with and put pressure on the government to deliver sustainable outcomes; and combined with the fact that every member of the public can write to their MP, campaign, and hold them to account... do we really need yet another ‘thing’?

jennymanara · 07/10/2019 19:27

Given that other methods of asking the Government to tackle the climate crisis have failed, what do you expect people to do? Things will only change with drastic actions.

SabineSchmetterling · 07/10/2019 19:29

Did those of you outraged by the white horse thing read the article? They laid some cloth down on it. Nothing was damaged. I’m not a massive fan of all of their methods but it’s hysterical to suggest that they “defaced” anything. They lay down some black cloth on the ground, hardly crime of the century.

ilovetofu · 07/10/2019 19:31

What are you on?!

Dapplegrey · 07/10/2019 19:31

Flying is extremely bad for the environment but the message isn’t getting through judging by the amount of planes in the air every minute of the day - according to the Flight Radar app.
I can’t see any government left, right or centre banning, or even cutting down flights.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 19:31

I still don't understand how coffee and takeaways became such a big thing.

I keep quiet in real life but it does bug me that friends and colleagues are huge consumers and go on about this. I make coffee in the office and take a packed lunch. I didn't ever know coffee came in single use plastic till my parents told me. I have acquaintances backing the protest who get a coffee and a smoothie in plastic every day at work, then wander round shops at the weekend, currently buying a ton of plastic for Halloween because last year's stuff can't be used again. I just don't get it.

TSSDNCOP · 07/10/2019 19:31

You know that chalk figures like that have to be ‘re chalked’ every so often?

That’s not the point and you know it. Defacing a historic monument is a fucking crap way to gain meaningful support.

While you are busy looking down your noses at these people what exactly are you doing?

Working to educate other people’s kids and feed my own. Like most people that appreciate and care about climate and the environment I have to do more than one thing at a time.

HelenaDove · 07/10/2019 19:32

The thing is companies like Thames Water should be being asked "what are you doing to make sure it doesnt happen again" The amount of plastic bottles that got into the eco system because of their failure was astronomical yet................radio silence.

OP posts:
Changestartsnow · 07/10/2019 19:33

Things will only change with drastic actions.

This is true. But drastic action is not going to happen.

The only way this planet will survive is NO MORE CONSUMERISIM. On any level.

But this won't happen. Because nobody is willing to go there.

Money really is the route of all evil.

AutumnRose1 · 07/10/2019 19:36

Helena, I wouldn't want people focusing in that, next they will be asking people to bring their own bucket when water supply problems occur.

It's like the groups targeting hospital supplies.

I wonder what would happen if all the protestors made a huge effort to reduce consumption? Or will they just protest about all the jobs lost next?

LisaRoundTheMulberryBush · 07/10/2019 19:36

I mean this respectfully HelenaDove, but honestly: ask them yourself!

You're complaining that you think people are protesting about the wrong things.

I'd say: you can't control those other protesters, but you can certainly make your own complaints!

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2019 19:38

I've heard this for 25 years. My mum reckons she's heard it for about 60 years.

Have either of you heard of the Thames barrier?

It's like Brexit and the Millenium Bug. "Well nothing happened. Fake news". Yes, because people DID THINGS. Clever people, engineers, to save your arses. Doesn't mean there wasn't a problem in the first place. There is an integrated system of flood defenses, including the barrier. Look what happened to New Orleans when people didn't spend the money and do the work.

Things will get worse. Extreme weather events will get more common. And by the time people notice it (because their arses are saved so many times) it will be too late.
