Good God Extinction Rebellion blocking a funeral hearse.

I know where they are coming from but for the love of God you dont block and/or lie under a funeral hearse. FGS think of the relatives and friends of the deceased and how they are feeling.

Unfuckingreal!

Yup their twitter responses are surely not what they hope for.

I saw this on their account (from Canada):

This Thursday join Extinction Rebellion as we liberate Laurier Bridge for exclusive use of pedestrians and cyclists! Enjoy food, music, speakers and of course a salsa dancing lesson! Stand up for action now on the climate and ecological collapse! www.facebook.com/events/763261014109354/

A bloody party. Maybe if they offered to ferry everyone around in tuk tuks they would be being useful. Salsa dancing my arse...

They are back in Trafalgar Sq and the police are shooing them off.

This is costing us all how much??

AutumnRose1 · 16/10/2019 14:42

It's such a waste of police time isn't it

My 81 year old mother has been trying to make sense of it. We're both probably the type of person who would have a first tack of thinking well of them, valuing the right to protest etc.

But this is mad.

#ExtinctionRebellion better not block the tubes this Friday my mum and and sister are heading up to London from Cornwall to get my mum to the #migraine clinic which she has been saving up for ages!

If she misses that appointment there will be hell to pay!

So she better not be delayed or stoped by these protests!

Poor Katie's mum.

I do actually think they'll pull it tomorrow and call it a pr win and show off about being considerate.

ReanimatedSGB · 16/10/2019 23:28

There is, let's say, some suspicion that the whole XR movement is by way of being a Thought Experiment by a couple of wankers along the lines of 'how to set up a protest movement then wreck it'. Not like Femen, oh no not at all So there might well be a response along the lines of 'How dare you think that your own concerns matter when THE WORLD IS BURNING?' despite the fact that all XR seem to be 'demanding' is for everyone else to say the magic words. Greta Thunberg's message is 'Listen to the scientists and follow their advice' which is a little more sensible and coherent.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 16/10/2019 23:36

It does feel like a social experiment - or a middle class protest wheeze (a bit how like glamping is cheaty festival going).

AutumnRose1 · 17/10/2019 00:07

Reanimated interesting.

The magic words are "there is a good service operating on all lines".

Though that too was subject to thought experiment - they used to call it "normal" service.

Sorry, I'll bore off now.

ReanimatedSGB · 17/10/2019 00:46

The magic words are 'Climate change is BAAAAAAD' and if everyone says them, including GOVERNMENT, then, well, it will all stop, and Tarquin and Moonchild can trot off home (once Mummy has paid their fines) and tell all their friends how getting arrested for doing a yoga outside McDonalds saved the world.

AutumnRose1 · 17/10/2019 10:05

I'm hearing rumours that they're done with disrupting the Tube now?

Big up to Canning Town, well done, sorry they had to go through that though.

Davros · 17/10/2019 10:43

I don't see how their protests are "peaceful"

AutumnRose1 · 17/10/2019 10:58

They're not peaceful at all
I'm now wondering if they'll stop tomorrow or Sunday. There's a political march on Saturday so I'm guessing they'll stop Friday....

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 13:34

Glued to trains. Leave them up there I say. Cant stay there forever and the commuters are getting rather pissed off.

Waited 4 months for an MRI scan for my wife/ got to Shadwell this morning to get to the hospital and there were four people glued to the train/ hard to deal with this tactic I must admit. #shadwell #ExtinctionRebelion

It got violent at Canning Town this morning - some commuters pulled the protesters from the train and started laying into them; only being stopped by a TFL employee bodily putting themselves between them.

Obviously I don’t condone violence at all but I think it was seriously naive to think that commuters frustration wouldn’t boil over like this - very poor on behalf of Extinction Rebellion as an organisation to have judged the situation so poorly and completely unprepared their activists. I’ve seen elsewhere complaints that people who were arrested were apparently massively underprepared for it by XR; and that a legal charity who specialises in assisting protests washed their hands of XR citing they had zero understanding of the risks; (or know the risks and go ahead anyway)

Once again, I find myself wondering what happened to personal responsibility.

AutumnRose1 · 17/10/2019 15:18

To be clear, members being arrested then saying "they weren't prepared" - you didn't get sent on a school trip!

HelenaDove · 17/10/2019 15:35

Among the commuters will be blue collar workers.......some of whom will be on zero hour contracts, people attending hospital appointments, people on UC attending Job Centre appointments or job interviews and courses. the UC system is very quick at handing out sanctions.

Just saw another video. The protestor would be lucky to get outbid the scrum in one piece. I hope they are ok - pains on the arse, as they are.

Grammar · 17/10/2019 16:10

Hmmm, I'm really torn.
On the one hand , I really admire some of these people, as I know ( BF aged 56 and lifelong concern about the planet, when I was in 20s and just wanted to have fun) has peacefully protested, no gluing or obstructing etc..
I admire her so much for sitting and sleeping out in the rain, but fully acknowledge that for some people there becomes a 'Messiah' element, and protest becomes activism, still OK but then segues into a type of terrorism , seen in examples here.
All activism is set out to disrupt. I'm not sure what the stats are for knowing what action provokes change, in this situation, we are experiencing new protests.

I'm too lazy and frightened to join, but to the peaceful protesters I take my hat off to them.
People can get a hubris about their chosen protest. It's absolutely ruthless to stop emergency services getting through.
This was a stunt though. Probably quite effective. As disturbing as ER is, the reason for the activism and the outcome our planet is facing, is more disturbing. That's my feeling.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/10/2019 16:14

Why don’t they protest outside shops selling tonnes and tonnes of crap - halloween plastic tat that will get thrown out on 1st Nov, cheap wear-and-throw clothes, swathes of plastic packaging, etc?

Grammar · 17/10/2019 16:22

Good point LordProf

In a now deleted tweet they compared what they did to Rosa Parks.

Some of my more progressive pals on social media are now speculating about whether or not XR in its entirety is some sort of police sting/false flag that got out of hand. Given how many longterm activists hate them (for their arrogance, stupidity, racism etc)
