I know where they are coming from but for the love of God you dont block and/or lie under a funeral hearse. FGS think of the relatives and friends of the deceased and how they are feeling.

Unfuckingreal!

Squiff70 You don’t need to read the whole thread but literally within 15 mins the OP acknowledged that she’d been mistaken; and that the news at the time had not reported it was a stunt.

Depressing thread.

MrGsFancyNewVagina · 08/10/2019 22:43

Classic case of jumping on the bandwagon without knowing the full facts probably.

Says the poster who hasn’t bothered reading the thread and learning the facts of the conversation. 🤣

The amount of water wasted by Thames Water is appalling. Seeing exactly the same complaints down Twitter as i saw after Beast From the East.

It's the hypocrisy of it al .
Protesting to save the planet, while filming it on mobile phones and holding up traffic.
Not letting cancer patients past fo appointments.etc

I agree 100 percent that change must happen immediately.
This won't happen with these protesters though

HelenaDove · 09/10/2019 00:24

Yes, they should and can do better (fracking, funding of sustainable energy etc); and they should absolutely be pressured to be held to account - but is that really going to be accomplished by a bunch of people doing yoga on Westminster Bridge? By a bunch of (paid) actors dressing in red?

@Dyrne And how do you suggest it’s accomplished and what are you going to do about it? Because sitting opining on an internet forum is going to “accomplish” sweet FA. At least Extinction Rebellion are out there trying to make a difference.

Dyrne · 09/10/2019 06:46

Yes you are completely right, Dongdingdong . There is absolutely no middle ground between doing nothing and superglueing yourself to a bridge. My apologies.

“The great tragedy of the climate crisis is that seven and a half billion people must pay the price – in the form of a degraded planet – so that a couple of dozen polluting interests can continue to make record profits. It is a great moral failing of our political system that we have allowed this to happen.”

UltimateSalt · 10/10/2019 22:27

@soola
Yeah, maybe it's just about law breaking. Unlike murdering someone, which is fine.

"For anyone who says #ExtintionRebellion are stopping emergency vehicles & people working:

Yes, people may suffer and could even die because of these protests. But if we don’t all change, we all suffer and die. It’s dark to even say it but we have to see the bigger picture"

Hmm

As Jonathan Pie said, I'd rather be a hypocrite than an arsehole

HelenaDove · 11/10/2019 02:12

Been talking with a 72 year old woman i know as well as my 69 year old DH about the 1950s and 1960s when they used to return lemonade bottles /beer bottles and get thruppence/sixpence for each one depending on what type of bottle it was.

What with Greta Thunberg shouting and ER blocking my path and having to spend £27 on a taxi I am so pissed off I just want to book a flight out of here

I just don’t get what they are doing apart from holding everyone up and shouting a lot.

ShippingNews · 11/10/2019 03:12

I'd take them more seriously if they were actually doing something positive for the environment, rather than abusing pedestrians and sticking themselves to the road.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/10/2019 03:18

Protestors Demonstrate Protest in a Way That Pisses People Off and Therefore Gets them In the News.

Protests aren't supposed to be convenient.Hmm

Sarcelle · 11/10/2019 04:40

For most of the protesters, they are committed to the cause. For others it is a jolly day out and they turn up to all the alternative events. All the yoga, weddings, man fake crying holding a photo of his kids, the trippy dancing is just a distraction from the cause and causes people to Hmmat it all.

I work in Westminster and walked through one of their little camps. They were all polite, well mannered, organised. I didn't see any attention seeking dancers etc, just concerned people. They were apologising to people if they were inconveniencing anybody.

They have drawn attention to the cause. However they are polarising - they either turn you on to the issue, or turn you off.

Do they protest outside the Chinese, American and Indian embassies. If not, why not? It is not just our government who needs to take swift action.

We are a massively consumerist society. I can't see it changing. People might be buying reusable coffee cups but they are also buying disposable fashion (all those outfit of the day on Instagram is not helping), buying the Halloween tat, the beauty advent calendars with excess packaging full of more stuff that nobody needs.

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/10/2019 11:12

For most of the protesters, they are committed to the cause

If pissing people off is the cause then they are certainly doing that.

Otherwise I haven’t a clue what the cause is other than shouting “The End is Nigh”
In which case I am going to enjoy myself.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 11/10/2019 11:31

I see OP still hasn’t had the untrue thread title amended.

Dyrne · 11/10/2019 11:39

Andrew Neil had a really good segment a couple of days ago where he systematically challenged the “doomsday” rhetoric of the Extinction Rebellion. All the way through he acknowledged the impact of Climate Change and the urgent need to act; however he made some fantastic points about the rhetoric about “billions dying within 10-20 years” being completely based on hysteria and not facts. It sums up my issue with the whole thing very well. By putting our preposterous claims, they’re actually diverting attention from the main issues.

Winding up their supporters so much that they start charging through airport security is insane - they could easily have been seriously harmed or charged under terrorism legislation. The police (quite rightly) can’t take the chance of assuming it definitely is ‘just’ a protester and not someone wishing to do serious harm under the guise of the protests.

(Although, given that one of the XR founders has actively called for governments to be overthrown and that some people may die as a result; that’s not too far off an assumption to make...)

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/10/2019 11:43

I don’t think ER are bothered about their protests ending in death.
(Blocking’s ambulances, fire engines and diverting the police from actually policing)

The deaths would be just collateral damage
