How many coats do you own?

Browsing through magazines trashy news websites I see that lots of celebs/politicians/royals seem to have an endless supply of elegant coats. In fact, they hardly ever seem to leave the house wearing the same coat more than once!

I own a paltry collection of 4 coats (light rain mac, warm wool winter coat, a parka and a very scruffy old coat that I wear to my aunt's farm).

How many coats do you own?

Too many. Across three dress sizes. I love a long wool coat. Riding coats or ashkratan or even a really nice trench coat.

The statement coat thing works when you’re a pedestrian.

Once my life changed and I started needing the car a lot, I didn’t really wear coats so much.

The evening coat game in this country needs reviving, though. We’re really bad at that.

TottieandMarchpane · 03/10/2019 23:13

1 knee length white cashmere coat that takes me through most of winter.

That sounds gorgeous, but how do you keep that spotless? You must look like a lost film star Smile

Around 30.

missanony · 03/10/2019 23:16

Mum coat
Warm coat puffa thing
Smart rain mac (no hood tho, needs a brolly)
Leather jacket
Heavy cotton jacket for September/springtime

I need a smart warm coat and a warm coat with a hood

GoingBackTo505 · 03/10/2019 23:16

One navy faux fur, one wool leopard print, one leather jacket (I don't think that counts as a coat does it?!) and one pale pink cosy waterproof puffa.

MirandaWest · 03/10/2019 23:17

Green warm coat
Blue spring/summer mac
Purple velvet coat
A cagoule

Babdoc · 03/10/2019 23:20

I have a 20 year old black winter maxi coat for “best”, a 10 year old practical warm waterproof one for every day, and a lighter raincoat for autumn. I only buy a new coat if one wears out beyond repair. I’ve stitched torn pockets back on and replaced buttons. It’s just so boring traipsing round clothes shops, I put it off for as many years as possible!

TrophyCat · 03/10/2019 23:24

@TottieandMarchpane

The evening coat game in this country needs reviving, though. We’re really bad at that evening coats? Like a coat you wear only at night time?

@BubblesBuddy are they all similar settles/colours or vastly different? Do you wear them all regularly or do some live in a wardrobe whilst you live in your favourite 2 or 3?

4 actual coats:
Biker style jacket
Denim jacket
2 Warm(ish) winter coats, one long, one short
And copious amounts of hoodies/jumpers

FinallyMrsE · 03/10/2019 23:25

1 knee length sleeping bag coat
1 mid thigh black Puffa
1 mid thigh brown puffa
1 waist length puffa
1 rain coat with removable fleece
1 parka
1 light rain mac
1 Sherpa style coat
1 camel coloured wool
1 leopard print wool
1 biker jacket

It seems like a lot to me but I have been a football mum for 16 years and am always on the lookout for the next warmest coat possible!

AliceLittle · 03/10/2019 23:29

Red Duffle coat
Black leather jacket
Down gilet
Grey waterproof
Black softshell

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 03/10/2019 23:30

I'm slightly addicted to coat buying. I walk everywhere so warm and waterproof but actually stylish is the Holy Grail.

TottieandMarchpane · 03/10/2019 23:31

Like a coat you wear only at night time?

Yes. Well, probably. Something you wear with evening clothes.

Reading the thread, velvet or faux fur would probably make the transition. Instead of the weird combos you often see. Or going without altogether.

I feel another purchase coming on. I haven’t had a faux fur coat for years. Maybe a really soft jacket would be nice.

This is your fault OP!

PonderLand · 03/10/2019 23:32

1 utility jacket
1 rain coat with the option of zipping in a body warmer.

I need more coats.

TrophyCat · 03/10/2019 23:36

@TottieandMarchpane buy yourself a selection of evening coats, you can singlehandedly start to revive this country's evening coat game. I'm tempted to join your cause as I lack any suitable evening coat.

SlothRunner · 03/10/2019 23:38

1 grey parka, a denim jacket, a suede biker style, cheapo plasticy rain mac, and a nice waterproof regatta coat

Time40 · 03/10/2019 23:41

Vintage for evening coats. Vintage every time. I've got some beauties from the 20s and 30s. And capes - don't forget evening capes.

I don't know how many coats I've got. A lot. Maybe about thirty?

Depends what you mean by coat? Does that include jackets? I have:-
One padded knee length winter coat
One slightly padded black hip length coat (for milder weather)
3 knee length wool coats - one white, one red, one grey
1 biker jacket
1 denim jacket

ShinyGiratina · 03/10/2019 23:48

Loads.
About 3 formal coats (least used at present, but classics worth keeping)
Waterproof & warm coat (the type I needed for so long and struggled to find)
Primaloft. Very warm, no hood
Thin down coat. Good for layering/ sports.
Soft shell jacket.
3-in-1 bought for waterproof/ layering.
My fleece windproof coat was great but is resting in the wardrobe for reasons of style having been usurped a long time ago by the now aging primaloft coat!

I have a very stable clothes size and it's hard to kill a coat Grin

ExpletiveDelighted · 03/10/2019 23:50

One padded waterproof standing-by-the-side-of-football-pitches coat.
One gore-tex jacket (oldest item of clothing I own at 22 years, still
worn regularly)
One cagoule
One high vis running jacket
One hip length puffa jacket
One smart mac
One thin Seasalt coat that was a bad buy but I keep in the car for emergencies
One grey cape with a fake fur collar for evenings out.
One fine knit poncho

Apart from the puffa jacket all are at least 5 years old, I overheat easily so don't wear them unless it is raining or bitterly cold, so they don't get too much wear each. I use the poncho a lot in autumn and spring as you can throw it on over anything, it hasn't been cold enough here yet for an actual coat but I've worn the gore-tex one in the rain.

IdblowJonSnow · 03/10/2019 23:52

4 long coats and a smart but dated work jacket. Boxy tweedy thing. Nice colour tho.
'Smart' coat is now really grubby, need a new one. I usually get one every other winter or so.
