How many coats do you own?

Browsing through magazines trashy news websites I see that lots of celebs/politicians/royals seem to have an endless supply of elegant coats. In fact, they hardly ever seem to leave the house wearing the same coat more than once!

I own a paltry collection of 4 coats (light rain mac, warm wool winter coat, a parka and a very scruffy old coat that I wear to my aunt's farm).

How many coats do you own?

Loads. Too many to remember what they all are.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 03/10/2019 23:57

I feel quite sad now as I only have 2.

1 winter coat but not too thick and a lovely green dressy coat.

I just wear a cardi if needed in warmer weather.

Wavyheaded · 04/10/2019 00:00

Everything I have currently:

Long warm puffa coat
Blue trench coat (not very warm)
Green 'army' style jacket (not warm at all)
Brown faux leather jacket
Denim Jacket

I used to have about 15 coats! But only wore about 2 of them. 5-6 throughout the year is a good number for me now I think.

Trying to find a nice wool long coat this season to give me an alternative to my puffa when it's cold. It's so hard to find a nice fitted coat with a classic collar that buttons up to the neck, not those boring 'funnel' necks or big blazer style coats, which are everywhere currently. Any recommends greatly appreciated!

Quite a few, I’ll try to list them all but I’ll probably forget a couple.

(I’ve also sold or donated at least 10 in a clearout earlier this year)

I’m going to run through proper coats first:

Wool coat - navy
Wool coat - Wine red
Wool coat - Camel/black/burgundy
Wool coat - Muted Leopard print
Wool coat - Olive
Tweed jacket - Olive
Trench coat, mid thigh length - Beige
Trench coat, calf length - Navy
Joules waxed jacket - Brown
Barbour quilted jacket - Olive
Barbour quilted jacket - Navy
Barbour wool cape - Burgundy/brown
Leather jacket - Forest green
Leather jacket - Burnt Orange
Imitation suede biker jacket - Yellow

There are at least five (probably more like ten) specific coats I would add to my wardrobe right now, if I had the budget for it. Love them. Love looking well put together, and a good coat goes a long way.

For summer I have fewer:

Light summer cotton jacket - Khaki
Denim jacket - Indigo
Linen blazer - Navy
Linen blazer - cream and washed black stripes

Plus the odd tux blazer/dressy blazer/velvet blazer for parties or going out.

“TrophyCat”: I have a mix of all sorts. Soft Shearling to Goretex hiking jacket, to Max Mara camel coat to one of their puffas. I have just bought the M&S yellow unlined cost in their sale and I have Burberry raincoats and very plain boyfriend coats by Jaeger. I like all of them! Some are old friends (my Harris tweed coat from Cos) and some get worn for special events! A few have just gone to the charity shop. Generally they are part of my personality and the yellow is the brightest! Generally I have camel, black, navy, burgundy and grey.

managedmis · 04/10/2019 01:13

I have at least 15, probably more like 20 including jackets.

Live in Canada though, so have 3 mega heavy duty winter ones too

SpaceCadet4000 · 04/10/2019 02:06

Three. 1 x Barbour (most commonly worn), 1 x insulated winter jacket (needed in US Midwest), 1 x wool coat (smart, for work).

MrsTishellsNeckBrace · 04/10/2019 07:00

I have a light jacket that I wear on April 25th ;-)

Igottastartthinkingbee · 04/10/2019 07:08

1 long warm waterproof parka
1 thin quilted coat
1 thin waterproof
1 short white wool jacket
1 now quite scruffy north face down jacket

I’d love lots of gorgeous coats but I rarely feel like I have enough money to buy a good one. They’re an investment really aren’t they.

8by8 · 04/10/2019 07:28

1 smart trench coat

1 waterproof jacket

1 proper coat (warm, waterproof, knee length)

1 pac a Mac that lives in the car

stucknoue · 04/10/2019 07:39

A few but some are really old - 5 waterproof jackets in various stages of quality/mudstainedness, a short trench coat, long trench cost and two wool coats, one brand new, one old and tatty.

stucknoue · 04/10/2019 07:40

Oh and a couple of Parker's

Venger · 04/10/2019 07:45
  • a not at all stylish but very warm padded, waterproof, windproof, many pocketed coat from the outdoor pursuits shop. Unless DH is home I walk the school run (five miles total over the day) so need something warm for bad weather
  • a not at all stylish less padded, waterproof, windproof jacket from the same shop for this time of year where it's too cold for a hoodie but too warm for the bomb proof coat above
  • a green hoodie
  • a blue gimlet with green trim that I wear with the hoodie when I need a little bit extra warmth
  • pack a mac that I keep on the bottom of the pushchair
  • denim jacket
  • knee length hooded cardigan with fleece lining, I count it as a jacket because it's too warm to wear as an actual cardigan
  • navy blazer
Venger · 04/10/2019 07:46

Gimlet? Gilet

SalamanderOnHoliday · 04/10/2019 07:48

I’m naturally fairly scruffy so a smart well fitted coat is my saviour. Outside at least I look stylish.

4 long wool coats, purple, teal, black (funerals), navy
North face waterproof warm smart coat for walking to work in rain
Fake leather jacket
Short green wool coat
Black evening coat, all silky and a good length for black tie things (primark)
4 waterproof jackets of varying weights and scruffiness for walking/gardening/running
Light weight trench coat

PP long white coat...wow, just how do yo7 keep it clean?

Milanimilani · 04/10/2019 07:50

A warm winter coat, a thin summer coat, a coat from work that gets worn in extremis.

lololove · 04/10/2019 07:51

My favourite coat from joe browns ever that I bought about four years ago and it still looks brand new.

A black coat for funerals in winter

A purpleish red one that I got for a steal in ebay that I haven't worn yet (it was under a fiver Inc postage and brand new)

A shorter hip length one again that I haven't worn yet (tags on, brand new from the charity shop)

Having said all this.... I don't wear coats that often unless it really is minus degrees weather. You usually find me in hoodies, even in dec, Jan, feb because I have an autoimmune issue and can't control my body temperature. I'm always roasting and sweating when out and about.

A little

Queenie24 · 04/10/2019 07:51

I have 2 waterproofs, 1 puffy warm, 1 nice wool type one and a denim jacket.

MaudesMum · 04/10/2019 08:04

I'm trying to have less coats but better ones, if you see what I mean. Currently I have 7 core coats and some extra ones I could do without and am gradually phasing out as they disintegrate.
My core coats :
Smart single-breasted wool coat (Jaeger)
Black leather jacket
Thin Cos mac (for damp days in London)
Seasalt parka with detachable lining
Denim jacket
down gillet from Gap (not real down)
Gardening fleece

Extra coats:
Elderly oversized barbour
Very scruffy seasalt waterproof (gardening for the use of)
Strange short coat from Cos with 3/4 length arms
Quilted jacket from north face that is slightly too tight
Waterproof fishing jacket, inherited from father
Another very ratty gardening fleece

AwdBovril · 04/10/2019 09:10

Four.

A padded knee length winter raincoat.
An unpadded thigh length raincoat.
A thick, hooded down gilet.
A knee length leather coat (charity shop bargain, or I’d only have the first three.)

Tyrotoxicity · 04/10/2019 09:16

None. Never got the hang of coats. Last attempt was about fifteen years ago I think.

FaerieKiss · 04/10/2019 09:35

God, too many.

A grey parka from Mint Velvet
A navy parka from French Connection
A grey/black wool coat from La Resource
A green tin-cloth mac from Seasalt
A black jeans jacket from All Saints
A pink duster coat from Zara
A navy casual jacket from Sailors & Brides
A brown suede, long line jacket from M&S
A black leather jacket from M&S
Long grey duster coat from Zara
Black boucle jacket from Laura Ashley
Grey velvet blazer from Zara
Black blazer from M&S

TrophyCat · 04/10/2019 12:47

Wow, it's a real mix of people who own 3 or 4 and people who have 20-30ish.

I might buy myself a new coat or two for Christmas.

Orangecake123 · 04/10/2019 13:19

1 puffy waterproof one.
1 rain coat.

I have lots of thick cardigans though.

RobinsParasiticEye · 04/10/2019 13:27

One parka second hand but brand new from a charity shop for 3 pounds. One second hand superdry windcheater that child has out grown. One garden/mucking out puffa No idea why you’d need 30+ coats Confused
