When did Viennetta stop being posh ??

I'd been talking to the DC about the sort of things we had as kids so decided this fridays food night (( always have a theme on a friday, usually Mexican / Chinese whatever )) it's a bit of an event, we set the table and use napkins, candles etc.

Yes. I'm a sad twat.

Anyways, tonight we had orange juice as a pre starter, served in posh glasses from the charity shop.

egg mayonnaise.

Chicken in a basket. (( Baskets stolen acquired from subway ))

And choice of arctic roll or and Viennetta for dessert.

It occurred to me when I brought out my picked up from Heron foods for £1 viennetta that Viennetta is no longer an event. When it used to be. So much so I can remember the first time I had it at a friend's house. And racing home to tell my mum. In a oooooooohhhhhh, we had Viennetta and it's not even a special occasion. I mean they were posh, they had other luxuries such as pop man deliveries and branded crisps but even so.

Anyways, when did Viennetta become just meh. And was it a luxury, almost aspirational dessert when you were a kid ?? Or was I just deprived ?? Grin

I think I once read that it’s Prince Williams favourite dessert...you are in good company...or have appalling taste ( delete as necessary )

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 19:36

Not tonight it's mainly because I'm too skint for takeaway / meals out so the DC don't miss out 😁Wink but we enjoy it.

That Viennetta scoffing kid will go far for sure 😂😂😂

@Wurzelsnewhead I bought a neopolitan one then other day in Farmfoods- I'd never seen one before, only remember vanilla and mint ones

TheNumberOneSourceOfEverything · 27/09/2019 19:36

I'm 40 and grew up on a council estate and it was never a posh thing when I was a kid. I mean it's wasn't given to us daily and we didn't have deserts every day but someone's bday it would be there with the jelly and ice cream.

Arctic roll was probably rarer to be honest as that wasn't sold in the local coop and required a bus trip to Iceland 😀

Doyouavocado · 27/09/2019 19:37

I love your Friday night food event idea!! I’m going to start doing this I think Grin

Passthecherrycoke · 27/09/2019 19:38

@Saucery my aim was to be rich enough to do my food shop in M&S. OMG SO POSH.

Now I am rich enough to do my food shop in M&S and it doesn’t quite have the same kudos now 😭

For a few posters- we don’t mean posh like, you know, princess Margaret posh 😭 80s treat posh

Nonnymum · 27/09/2019 19:38

I don't think it was ever posh was it? Delicious though!

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 27/09/2019 19:38

I'm not sure It was posh but it was definitely a special occasion treat in our house

HappyHammy · 27/09/2019 19:38

Did you finish off with an Irish Coffee and a After Eight Mint.

Nonstopbuttmachine · 27/09/2019 19:39

My parents still buy Viennetta and solemnly eat a slice twice a week. Isn't it just an inside out choc ice ffs?

RoseDog · 27/09/2019 19:40

I love a viennetta I'm so posh Iceland sells their own make on a stick, a viennetta lolly...perfection

Can't stand an artic roll though, soggy cold sponge Envy

TheNumberOneSourceOfEverything · 27/09/2019 19:40

Corned Beef used to be a staple in our house though, sandwiches, toasties, pie, and corned beef hash.

It's practically a luxury now as it's so expensive. My mam used to make corned beef pies weekly but now says she's not spending £6 on two tins of corned beef when she can buy a freshly made pie from the Butchers for £2 😂

PrincessScarlett · 27/09/2019 19:41

Ahhh my nan used to serve us up viennetta and it was such a treat as my mum refused to buy it. My mum obviously had viennetta sussed from the off.

duvetaddict · 27/09/2019 19:41

Vienetta was posh but romantica was the ultimate fancy pudding!

Leflic · 27/09/2019 19:42

It was posh because any pudding was really.

We got homemade cakes and biscuits on occasion ( or a packet mix cheesecake for a Sunday) but we certainly didn’t follow every evening meal with something.

Ready made stuff was a pretty fancy treat.

As opposed to now when it’s the opposite way round and you pay for the nose for hand/homemade.

Wobblywibblywoo · 27/09/2019 19:42

I remember them being posh, even had a posh advert for them.

muddledmidget · 27/09/2019 19:44

The special treat in my house growing up was either a Sara Lee chocolate gateaux or a tesco chocolate cheesecake, vienetta was only bought at Christmas!

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 19:44

HappyHammy we have half a game of charades going whilst I sneak on here. Winner gets a handful matchmakers 😂😂😂

Shesaidno Neapolitan vienetta, you’ve blown my mind !

LilacTreeShades · 27/09/2019 19:45

I remember when I was a child, holidaying with my family at Butlin's in the '80's and we were half board. When they brought out a whole Vienetta for each table, we were very impressed Grin

Wizzbangpop · 27/09/2019 19:45

Probably the same time that Ferro Roche were available for a reasonable price at your average supermarket

libertyminty · 27/09/2019 19:46

I remember we used to ask for it instead of a birthday cake, we considered it that much of a treat! My mum used to put the candles in it, loved it.

lazylinguist · 27/09/2019 19:46

It was never posh!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 27/09/2019 19:46

Your Friday theme nights sound fab!

Mil still uses her good crystal bowls for Viennetta and she is one posh woman, so clearly you have good taste op Wink
