When did Viennetta stop being posh ??

I'd been talking to the DC about the sort of things we had as kids so decided this fridays food night (( always have a theme on a friday, usually Mexican / Chinese whatever )) it's a bit of an event, we set the table and use napkins, candles etc.

Yes. I'm a sad twat.

Anyways, tonight we had orange juice as a pre starter, served in posh glasses from the charity shop.

egg mayonnaise.

Chicken in a basket. (( Baskets stolen acquired from subway ))

And choice of arctic roll or and Viennetta for dessert.

It occurred to me when I brought out my picked up from Heron foods for £1 viennetta that Viennetta is no longer an event. When it used to be. So much so I can remember the first time I had it at a friend's house. And racing home to tell my mum. In a oooooooohhhhhh, we had Viennetta and it's not even a special occasion. I mean they were posh, they had other luxuries such as pop man deliveries and branded crisps but even so.

Anyways, when did Viennetta become just meh. And was it a luxury, almost aspirational dessert when you were a kid ?? Or was I just deprived ?? Grin

They stopped being posh about 1978 I'd say.
But here are some ideas for your posh meals Rubbing, avocado vinaigrette, avocado with prawn cocktail, halved small round melons (eg Cantaloupe) with the dip filled with port or strawberries for children, melon "boats" with a glacé cherry.

Chicken Forestier made with fancy mushrooms, Chicken Kiev used to be incredibly exotic! As did chocolate mousse, or anything decorated with starfruit slices.

Wine Wine Wine Wine

I'm not sure when they stopped being posh but have you seen that footage of them being made? It's mesmerising.

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 21:01

Ada I'll bare those in mind for next time. I think it's Mexican night next week as it's been a while. Always a highlight as we have giant hats for the occasion..........they always go down better than my origami swan attempts on Chinese night.

Ungrateful wretches Hmm

My mother looked down her nose at ‘shop bought cakes and biscuits’ - very common. But would also refuse to buy Vienettas on the grounds they were too expensive. We had to make do with a plastic tub of Soft Scoop with a squirt of Ice Magic.

Mariana so does my poor dp.

I've taunted him pretty much daily with qoutes from that thread. I'm very annoyed someone got there first and stole Rubbing Him Sweetly 😂😂😂Grin

In the late 80's. Along with prawn cocktails and Liebfraumilch

jmh740 · 27/09/2019 21:09

First time I had xmas dinner at the xs (early 90s) we had vienetta for dessert they thought it was very posh.

mindutopia · 27/09/2019 21:10

Was it ever posh? Because I’m nearly 40 and when I was 18 I totally remember going to the shops to buy things with my (not at all posh) boyfriend (and my things I mean weird things to use while having sex that seemed super edgy when you are 18) and we also used to buy a vienetta.

MrsT1405 · 27/09/2019 21:13

Our local chicken and chips restaurant has individual small ones for dessert......5 euros each!!

Figgygal · 27/09/2019 21:13

I bloody love a vienetta am like a kid at Christmas when they bring out a special edition lol

My in laws secretly laugh at me as i always have to have one on Christmas Day

historysock · 27/09/2019 21:19

'Kin love Vienetta. It was semi posh in our house in that it was always one of the desserts on offer after the Sunday lunch-the other always featuring a form of stewed fruit....

WrongKindOfFace · 27/09/2019 21:22

It definitely wasn’t posh, but it was a Sunday lunch pudding rather than a weeknight pudding.

SleepyKat · 27/09/2019 21:23

As a kid we only ever had it at my grandparents as my parents couldn’t afford it. Gran used to serve it in the glass dishes on stalks just like in the advert. I was scraping the remnants out of mine so vigorously once that I broke the dish and got a right wallop round the head! Grin

LemonPrism · 27/09/2019 21:23

I mean I was born in'95 and it's always just been a cheap pudding tbh.

Ben and Jerry's was posher when I was a kid

SouthernComforts · 27/09/2019 21:24

What has happened to the price of corned beef is an absolute travesty. I remember my mum would make me a corned beef butty, I'd cut it in half and put ketchup on one half and salad cream on the other.

Vienettas were still posh in my house in the late 90's

FatherFintanFay · 27/09/2019 21:24

Venus Ice Magic! Now there was a concept that was better in theory than when you were eating it. If you were cautious and only put a thin layer on, it was quite pleasant, but if you tried to make a big thick lump of it, you ended up with basically a piece of incredibly cheap and nasty chocolate flavoured crap. It was an early lesson in restraint.

SouthernComforts · 27/09/2019 21:25

I'd put vienetta on the same tier as after eights.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/09/2019 21:26

I still think it's a bit posh Blush

SleepyKat · 27/09/2019 21:27

I’ve never eaten arctic roll in my life, am I missing out?

yearinyearout · 27/09/2019 21:27

We used to have a Sara Lee chocolate gateau on special occasions...waiting for it to defrost was painful.

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 21:28

lemon

Born in 95 you say ?? You are a kid. Grin

For all wanting the chocolate gateaux, it's just over a quid in Jack Fultons!

MrsElizabethShelby · 27/09/2019 21:30

Gosh we used to be given such a tiny sliver. Now I know it was because it's a used to be (might still be?) Low syns on slimming world and my nan wanted a massive slice to herself.

MrsElizabethShelby · 27/09/2019 21:33

@Rubbing what's more depressing is those born in 2001 are 18 this year!
