When did Viennetta stop being posh ??

I'd been talking to the DC about the sort of things we had as kids so decided this fridays food night (( always have a theme on a friday, usually Mexican / Chinese whatever )) it's a bit of an event, we set the table and use napkins, candles etc.

Yes. I'm a sad twat.

Anyways, tonight we had orange juice as a pre starter, served in posh glasses from the charity shop.

egg mayonnaise.

Chicken in a basket. (( Baskets stolen acquired from subway ))

And choice of arctic roll or and Viennetta for dessert.

It occurred to me when I brought out my picked up from Heron foods for £1 viennetta that Viennetta is no longer an event. When it used to be. So much so I can remember the first time I had it at a friend's house. And racing home to tell my mum. In a oooooooohhhhhh, we had Viennetta and it's not even a special occasion. I mean they were posh, they had other luxuries such as pop man deliveries and branded crisps but even so.

Anyways, when did Viennetta become just meh. And was it a luxury, almost aspirational dessert when you were a kid ?? Or was I just deprived ?? Grin

We always had vienetta as part of the family bucket from KFC! You could have that or a bottle of pop I think? And corn on the cob or naked beans and coleslaw.

So by mid-90s definitely not posh...

Snooks1971 · 27/09/2019 19:48

Can I add in Cornettos?
Growing up they were far too expensive from the ice cream van but now are often 4 for £1 on spesh.

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 27/09/2019 19:48

Vienetta was our Christmas dessert. I still buy it for Christmas now but it has changed. The top is smoother. I remember it being bumpy and we counted out the bumps to get the correct size slice (4 when I bought it myself, probably 2 when I was a kid). And always served with squirty cream.

Agree with that Leflic, there certainly wasn't the money for convenience food in our house. We were lucky as our mum was a baker / pastry chef. So every Sunday we'd come home to a houseful of steam and the worktops would be covered in the baking for the week. Pies, bread, cakes. Even doughnuts. I mean they were tasty, but not seen as anything to get excited about unlike findus crispy pancakes or Viennetta.

I miss the biscuit Vienetta.

I found the chocolate orange one in ASDA last year and ds (7) was very impressed. I didn't tell him it was a pound so he might too consider it posh Grin

GlendaSugarbeanIsJudgingYou · 27/09/2019 19:49

I grew up in the 90's and remember getting them free with KFC bargain buckets.

Not posh at all. :o

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 27/09/2019 19:49

Speaking of cornettos, has anyone had one lately? I have it was so much smaller than I remember

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/09/2019 19:50

I think it was still posh until I left home in the early 90's, always been a bit behind the times🤣

We bought one a couple of years ago and it was so disappointing, just tasted of nothing. I remember them being so lovely.

We used to have posh ice cream puds at my in laws in the late nineties and early noughties. After eight ice cream puds, that kind of thing. Not even sure they exist anymore.

Wurzelsnewhead · 27/09/2019 19:51

Arctic roll - yes that was posh too and I’ve just realised I’ve never had it! Thanks OP, adding to my shop for tmrw 😀

I think it depends on how old you are as to if you think it’s posh.

EdWinchester · 27/09/2019 19:52

I can remember going to restaurants with my parents in the 1980s and the adults having a 'special coffee', usually with Tia Maria.

How naff were they? We even had the glasses at home, and I used to love making them for guests. A treat then, utterly gopping now.

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 19:53

Cornettos were proper posh.

I remember getting hissed at by my brother
for being cheeky when his mate offered to buy me an ice cream and I asked for a Cornetto. Grin

I reckon it stopped being posh about the time Haagen Dazs appeared in the market?

maxiflump1 · 27/09/2019 19:54

@Doyouthinktheysaurus I also bought one the other day and was so excited to share is with 4 year old DS. He look remarkably unimpressed and in fairness it tasted pretty rank, really processed and bland. He asked me never to buy another ever again! Why does food from you childhood never taste as good when your an adult?!

Justmuddlingalong · 27/09/2019 19:54

It wasn't posh. But it was definitely a step up from going out to the ice cream van with a casserole dish, to get a few scoops of vanilla, cracking open a tin of fruit cocktail and arguing who got the 1 half of a cherry last week.

MonnaLisa · 27/09/2019 19:56

Hi I was brought up in Italy in the 1990s. Our signature antipasto for when the president of the Republic visited (he didn't but you get my drift) was prosciutto & melon, then risotto with champagne & quails & profiteroles (filled with ice cream instead of whatever they are normally filled with) for dessert. Anyone else from other countries?

youllhavehadyourtea · 27/09/2019 19:56

It was never posh but it was definitely a treat.

In a world of angel delight and semolina pudding with tinned fruit, it was very special.

And of course you had to have a freezer! Many people only had the wee icebox at the top of the fridge, and I don't think it would fit in there.

So it was aspirational, too.

emilybrontescorsett · 27/09/2019 19:57

I do remember it being posh.
We never had it, my aunty did.
I think it's because we always had home made deserts, always. I lived with my grandma and she made everything from scratch including pastry.
So her buying a desert was unheard of.
Thinking about it now my grandmas deserts were fabulous. One of my favourites was home made egg custard. I knew if it was home made meat and potato pie, then we would also have egg custard. Nothing has ever compared to my grandmas home made meat and potato pie ever.

Passthecherrycoke · 27/09/2019 19:57

Tsk KFC didn’t even exist back then 🤣

Cornettos = well posh. Were Bigger than they are now too

rededucator · 27/09/2019 19:57

I'd think it was the complete opposite of posh.

Saucery · 27/09/2019 19:57

Ice cream van with a casserole dish? We had cream off top of t’milk and were glad about it! Our Dad always had the half cherry. It ‘saved arguments’ apparently Hmm

MonnaLisa · 27/09/2019 20:00

Oh Viennetta was never 'posh' in Italy because you could buy way better, cheaper ice cream from gelaterie. I remember wen frozen yogurt came in the early 1990s was the height of sophistication, though.

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 20:00

Did KFC exist in the early 80s ?? BlushGrin

Vienetta was so posh, I think we had it once & once only.
