When did Viennetta stop being posh ??

I'd been talking to the DC about the sort of things we had as kids so decided this fridays food night (( always have a theme on a friday, usually Mexican / Chinese whatever )) it's a bit of an event, we set the table and use napkins, candles etc.

Yes. I'm a sad twat.

Anyways, tonight we had orange juice as a pre starter, served in posh glasses from the charity shop.

egg mayonnaise.

Chicken in a basket. (( Baskets stolen acquired from subway ))

And choice of arctic roll or and Viennetta for dessert.

It occurred to me when I brought out my picked up from Heron foods for £1 viennetta that Viennetta is no longer an event. When it used to be. So much so I can remember the first time I had it at a friend's house. And racing home to tell my mum. In a oooooooohhhhhh, we had Viennetta and it's not even a special occasion. I mean they were posh, they had other luxuries such as pop man deliveries and branded crisps but even so.

Anyways, when did Viennetta become just meh. And was it a luxury, almost aspirational dessert when you were a kid ?? Or was I just deprived ?? Grin

I was coming on to say 1985

Rachelover60 · 28/09/2019 11:33

I never knew Vienetta was 'posh'.

jennymanara · 28/09/2019 11:34

When ice creams like Ben and Jerrys started being sold, we thought they were amazing. There used to be not much choice at all with processed foods and most of it was very poor.

VictoriaBun · 28/09/2019 11:39

Grew up in the 70s. Posh in our house was having cream instead of custard. Article roll, having a tin of Red salmon at Christmas time for sandwiches.
After eights, looking forward to Satsumas because they were only about around Christmas .

Having crisps at the weekend only , likewise my mum would make a cake on a Friday for a weekend treat . Biscuits in the house were rare.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/09/2019 12:00

.It was only ever an event if you ate the whole thing straight from the freezer like a giant choc ice.

Ooh, home super-sizing! Similarly, with a bit of carefully-controlled melting/welding along the edges, you can turn 4 chunky Kit-Kats into a giant daddy-of-them-all 4-finger one!

NightLion · 28/09/2019 12:10

Like most treats, Viennetta was a luxury when I was growing up during the 70's. I can still remember my first trip to McDonalds when I was 15! Junk food was a rare treat for me and my siblings.

Aaarrgghhh · 28/09/2019 16:27

I’m not sure it was ever posh as such, I mean we were led to believe it was posh or fancy but it was never expensive really, was it? I was born in 94 if that helps at all.

Pollydocket · 28/09/2019 17:45

If you were born in 94, you won’t think of it as a posh teat!

I’m not sure posh is the right word but those born earlier will remember how limited convenience food was. Also people did make their own treats, so shop bought was a big deal.

If you were born in 94 you probably don’t remember being send for four scoops from the ice cream van either 😂

raspberryk · 28/09/2019 18:03

I was born in 87 and it wasn't posh in my lifetime. I do love the stuff though and I'm wondering if I imagined the lemon flavour?

BikeRunSki · 28/09/2019 18:22

I was born in 1970. Vienetta was definitive to posg she. It was released in the early 80s.

Passthecherrycoke · 28/09/2019 19:02

Anything you could buy like that was a bit posh. As others have said, convenience food used to be fairly uncommon so it was a bit of a treat, and posh because you didn’t have to Slave over it

Ivysaurus · 28/09/2019 19:58

Egg mayonnaise starter!! Never knew anyone else did this i thought my nana invented it Blush we have this on Christmas day as no one likes prawns, a few salad leaves with a boiled egg cut in half covered in mayo and a sprinkle of paprika, how do you make yours?

Rachelover60 · 28/09/2019 20:35

I love egg mayonnaise! Yum! Really fancy some right now as you've mentioned it. I always cut the boiled eggs up quite small and mixed with mayonnaise adding some seasoning. It's nice on smoked salmon too.

I'm pushing 70 and have no memory of Vienetta being 'posh'. I bought it occasionally as it only needing serving up, no effort. Husband and son liked it more than I did.

Passthecherrycoke · 28/09/2019 20:40

Bet your kids thought it was though Rachel. Getting it only occasionally was the whole excitement

SecretWitch · 28/09/2019 21:08

My nan was of the opinion that nobody needed anything but tinned fruit with a whack of cream. The only time we had something different was on Christmas when the after eights and orange chocolate slices were fanned out on a Santa dish for extra holiday cheer.

FatherFintanFay · 28/09/2019 21:58

I was born in the late 70s and convenience food was pretty widespread by the time I was at primary school. It was considered a posh option because it was so expensive, but there was always a faction of people like my mother (absolutely riddled with class anxieties) who looked down on anything "shop-bought". Puddings, when we got them, were either homemade stodge like apple pie or treacle sponge, or just a piece of fruit. Apparently we were supposed to think that homemade was nicer than shop-bought. But it wasn't. Not in the case of the mighty Romantica, anyway.

I don't think we ever had egg mayonnaise. Dad thought mayonnaise was a bit too French and was therefore to be viewed with suspicion. The height of sophistication was to go to a Berni Inn and have a prawn cocktail, followed by steak and chips, with Black Forest Gateau for "sweet". Incidentally, that's very much not a posh word. It should always be pudding!

Rosere · 28/09/2019 22:36

Aw man, vienetta only came out on special occasions in our house. It was definitely a luxury dessert back in the day. Am laughing @NotTonightJosepheen and your vow to eat the whole Romantica 😂😂 I'd love to do that but as soon as I became an adult they disappeared never to be seen again 😂

No, nobody did, it was just pudding. Quite nice but not as nice as apple crumble :-). Easier of course. I honestly never knew anyone thought it was 'posh'. When it was a new thing I can understand some people finding it a novelty but no more than that. We just shoved a couple in the freezer as standby if we were feeling lazy.
