When did Viennetta stop being posh ??

I'd been talking to the DC about the sort of things we had as kids so decided this fridays food night (( always have a theme on a friday, usually Mexican / Chinese whatever )) it's a bit of an event, we set the table and use napkins, candles etc.

Yes. I'm a sad twat.

Anyways, tonight we had orange juice as a pre starter, served in posh glasses from the charity shop.

egg mayonnaise.

Chicken in a basket. (( Baskets stolen acquired from subway ))

And choice of arctic roll or and Viennetta for dessert.

It occurred to me when I brought out my picked up from Heron foods for £1 viennetta that Viennetta is no longer an event. When it used to be. So much so I can remember the first time I had it at a friend's house. And racing home to tell my mum. In a oooooooohhhhhh, we had Viennetta and it's not even a special occasion. I mean they were posh, they had other luxuries such as pop man deliveries and branded crisps but even so.

Anyways, when did Viennetta become just meh. And was it a luxury, almost aspirational dessert when you were a kid ?? Or was I just deprived ?? Grin

Oh my goodness, Sarah Lee chocolate gateau! Shock

We got one every Christmas.

ScrambledSmegs · 27/09/2019 20:26

I think they were posh if you were from the sort of family (ie mine) that only ever allowed the children to have ice lollies (orange or lemon) or mini milks from the ice cream van, and the adults got choc ices, never 99 flakes because they were common .

They didn’t win because I bought my first Feast when I was 10 with my own money, it was epic. Viennettas are still one of my favourite desserts, and I love stracciatella ice cream because it’s basically mashed-up Viennetta that sounds a bit sophisticated Grin.

Passthecherrycoke · 27/09/2019 20:26

Yes you’re so right about the entrance of Haggan daz into the market stealing vienettas poshness. We even had a haggan daz cafe in my city, which is super posh tbf. No McDonald’s but a haggan daz cafe

My mother in law still thinks they’re posh. It’s what she imagines celebrities eat. Honestly.

As for Ferrero rocher, well they’re only for royalty.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 27/09/2019 20:31

I remember Kunzle cakes in cafes, looking so sophisticated and 'treaty'!

Wallabyone · 27/09/2019 20:31

I used to like Viennetta; my grandma would often serve it up. Yes to Sara Lee chocolate gateau, and all the dreamy left over icing being stuck I. The ridges plastic wrapper and u seeing allowed to lick it off Grin Does anyone remember frozen apple and raisin strudel? This was also served at my grandparents after a Saturday night dinner, with custard, and my grandma would sprinkle ground cinnamon over the custard...ahh, happy food memories 😍

BeardedMum · 27/09/2019 20:31

I love viennetta and this week have eaten 2 viennettas all by myself😋

Cookit · 27/09/2019 20:36

I’m sure my grandparents told me that when the first MacDonald’s in their area opened you used to get dressed up to go there and it was a big deal.

I’m not sure if Vienetta was fancy or just that lots of things are misinterpreted by children.

Mintylizzy9 · 27/09/2019 20:39

Of course KFC was around in the 80’s! It was called by its full title though, Kentucky Fried Chicken. I remember the adverts with colonel Sanders secret recipe and his ten gallon white hat and suit Grin

RubbingHimSourly · 27/09/2019 20:41

Cookit I remember our McDonald's opening and my mum getting me and my sister a cheeseburger and fries to share once. She didn't have anything, we were very poor so that would have been a stretch. The inside had toadstool tables and a TV playing Ronald McDonald cartoons in the kids area and we thought it was amazing. Grin

@Wallabyone Frozen apple strudel is £1 in freezers everywhere! Grin

Aprinceinapaupersgrave · 27/09/2019 20:41

My flatmate and I used to have an Entemanns fat free cake and a glass of wine each whilst watching Ally McBeal. Happy days!

FatherFintanFay · 27/09/2019 20:43

We weren't allowed them because my mum thought they were "common". So being served a slice after I'd had my tea at a friend's house was about as exciting as it got for me.

I remember the Romantica too, and I'm English. Man, that was some good ice cream. Can you still get them anywhere?

Justmuddlingalong · 27/09/2019 20:43

The first time my kids and I took their gran to McDonald's, she located the napkins and straws fine, but spent ages looking for the cutlery. 🤣🤣🤣

PancakeAndKeith · 27/09/2019 20:43

I don’t think it ever was posh. Fancy yes, but not posh.

MarianaMoatedGrange · 27/09/2019 20:44

@RubbingHimSourly I remember the thread which inspired your username Grin

BareBelliedSneetch · 27/09/2019 20:46

The super treat ice cream in our house was Gino Ginelli tutti fruiti. Or mint choc chip on very special occasions Grin

Wurzelsnewhead · 27/09/2019 20:47

Passthecherrycoke There was a Haagen Das cafe in Leicester Square, never went in though- what was the point when I could buy a whole tub of ice cream elsewhere for the price of one scoop😂

Someone mentioned Sara Lee chocolate gateaux. Now that is food of the gods, I could eat a whole one of those

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2019 20:50

It’s still posh in my Parents in Law’s house. You get it on birthdays and as an alternative to Christmas pud.

FatherFintanFay · 27/09/2019 20:50

And re Macdonald's, where I grew up there was a sort of kiddy restaurant that served many different variations of "something with chips and beans" and gave them zappy sounding names. You could get The Pirate (fishfingers, chips and beans), The Cowboy (burger, chips and beans), The Spaceman (chicken nuggets, chips and beans, no, me neither). It was the pinnacle of achievement to have your birthday party in there c.1985, so Macdonald's didn't hold anything like the same appeal. Besides, we still had a Wimpy at that point, and you git cutlery there...

Justmuddlingalong · 27/09/2019 20:52

Oooh. Wimpy Knickerbocker glory or banana splits were amazing.

ItsReallyOnlyMe · 27/09/2019 20:55

I don't care if Viennetta is posh or not - but I know Viennetta served with Baileys is delicious !
