This is going to become the Mumsnet chicken....Of course I can shower in under 10 seconds using three drops of water exactly!

EskewedBeef · 26/09/2019 08:35

I timed myself this morning during an earlier than normal start, trying to be slightly faster than usual but struggling to focus. It was 3.5 minutes - shampoo (mid-length hair), condition, wash top to toe with soap and scrubby gloves, rinse.

Absa · 26/09/2019 08:37

10-15 mins for me depending on hair wash / shaving.

Lived in Australia for a while, sometimes there are 3 min shower allowances there and I struggled with this but just about managed because I had to.

Monkeyplanet · 26/09/2019 08:55

OP please don't rent out your spare room.

You are clearly too petty and sound like a nightmare to live with especially with that comment about how her personal hygiene is your business because she rents a room in your house. All the things you described are not unreasonable behaviour.

A live-in landlord should be able to let things slide and accept differences in how people live not be as dictatorial as you sound.

Save everyone some grief and quit this landlord lifestyle. Definitely not for you.

Someone like you pisses me off to no end, willing to take people's money but make zero concessions in living with an adult and want to dictate every move to them like they are your child

KUGA · 26/09/2019 09:00

Me too,15/20 mins.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 26/09/2019 09:04

7 or 8 minutes tops including leg shaving etc. This was a bugbear of mine until recently as my water bills doubled when DH and the stepkids moved in (we are on a water meter). Eldest stepson was taking 20 mins in the shower with the water running the whole time. For the person who said 'don't be a miser' there's no need to have water running for all that time! We told him to cut it down and he has. Same with my DD (very long hair) she takes 7 or 8 minutes tops.

GrapefruitGin · 26/09/2019 09:09

How often does your lodger have these 20 min showers? Some mornings I can take 15 minutes but some mornings (normally when off to work) I take 5 min showers. I generally shower once a day, sometimes twice depending on what I’ve been doing, the weather etc. So I think we can only answer your AIBU if you give more detail on how often she’s showering.

IdblowJonSnow · 26/09/2019 09:10

No I wouldn't say something! I take much l9nger than that if washing my hair and shaving legs.
Why are you timing your lodger? Presumably she or he pays you for the privilege of a room in your house and therefore has a right to use the facilities?

LadyB49 · 26/09/2019 09:54

Bathroom time..... Teeth, shower, hair, dry off, medicated powder (instead of talc) etc. wipe down shower and tray, mini mop over bathroom floor. bleach down toilet. Towel over wash hand basin etc. 20 minutes. Bathroom set up for the day.

Kinsters · 26/09/2019 10:01

Depends how nice the shower is and how much of a rush I'm in. Getting ready in the morning or a quick shower after the gym and I can be done in 5 minutes, a relaxing Sunday morning shower and I can be ages (especially if the weather is cold).

GrinGrinGrin

When I read these threads about 3/4 minute showers I have a mental image of me tying myself in knots and falling over several times trying to do the same! My coordination is awful Grin

Shelby30 · 26/09/2019 10:17

If I'm not washing my hair then just 5mins for a wash and shave underarms. If I'm washing my hair then probably closer to 15mins. If I'm also shaving my legs then yeah more like 20mins.

My dh has a 20min shower every day, drives me insane. He puts the shower on and then sits on the toilet for at least 10mins so that the water is hot when he's ready to get in 😡

Starrynights86 · 26/09/2019 10:20

Love a long shower, I often just stand under the water.

fishonabicycle · 26/09/2019 10:20

Even if I wash my hair and shave legs etc, it's still only about 5 mins. And I turn the water off while putting shampoo or conditioner in and shaving.

Love51 · 26/09/2019 10:30

You aren't her moral guardian. If she wants to use the shower and washing machine differently to you, she can! Unless you put it in the contact terms - also if she doesn't shower every day, is she allowed longer? Your contract could state 'use of the washing machine twice per week, between the hours of 5am and 7 am. 30 minutes shower time per week, not exceeding 7 minutes on any given day.'
It seems invasive to be a actively monitoring her shower time in the home you share with her.

chamenanged · 26/09/2019 10:38

Don't mean to sound rude but there's a reason landlords are first for the guillotine. Jesus Christ.

dontgobaconmyheart · 26/09/2019 11:16

What is the nature of your problem OP? The fact you feel they should shower quicker (none of your business and stop monitoring it and making judgements on it, that's really weird) or that you have contractually allowed a certain usage in your tenancy agreement and she is breaking it (simply remind her of this).

I have an invisible disability and it takes me ages to shower properly. Most people enjoy a shower simply to unwind or relax- accounting for what she is doing in there is really overstepping. I'd hate to live with someone who did this and wouldn't if I knew.

Competitive showerers are the worst, as it's actually evidence that you are more efficient put together people. It's as bad as those that like to stealth gloat about their 'natural' beauty by mentioning at every juncture that how little they use and do and 'need' re" beauty and cosmetics.

ChasingRainbows19 · 26/09/2019 11:21

I can do have a basic shower in about 3/4 mins. Hair and shaving is probably double that. However my partner he takes about 10-15 mins every day! He does wash his hair daily though....

pusspuss9 · 26/09/2019 11:29

I live in Germany. We're changed on the amount of water that runs away and also the cost of heating the water.

Judging by the comments on here, heating the water must be pretty much without charge in the Uk as nobody has mentioned it at all and environmentally waste of water also a concern.

Katex888 · 26/09/2019 11:30

I take as long as I need in my crying chamber. Exfoliate, shampoo, hair mask, conditioner, etc. My DH knows if I say I’m taking a shower then it’s 10 mins minimum

cornplant · 26/09/2019 11:34

You sound like the worlds worst landlady!!

Fifthtimelucky · 26/09/2019 11:37

I'm amazed at some of these long showers. Timed myself this morning (just with normal analogue bathroom clock, so won't be very precise) and it took 4 minutes, which included washing and conditioning my shoulder length hair.

Once a week or so I have a longer shower in which I shave legs and armpits and/or exfoliate.

We have a power shower and a water meter.

I always shower in the morning so want to be in and out quickly. If I was having a shower in the evening I'd probably want it to be more leisurely and relaxing.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 26/09/2019 11:38

For those who are having a go at the OP I'm guessing you're not on water meters or you're not paying £70 a month for water at the minute like I am, or you're all rich! Regardless of the environmental concerns.

Ragwort · 26/09/2019 11:46

I think you are totally within your eights to point out the cost, and waste of water. I have long hair but am in and out of the shower in less than 5 minutes, I can’t understand what people do for so long in the shower Confused. Maybe I don’t wash thoroughly enough.

Clayplease · 26/09/2019 11:47

We had a housemate who would spend almost an HOUR in the shower. Blush That really was ridiculous. Thankfully it wasn't very often.

I have 20 min showers but def not every day. Talking about an environmental point of view. Apparently eating meat uses vast amounts of water, so maybe if she's veggie or vegan she's actually doing better than most of us even with daily long showers!
