I would be looking for a new place ASAP if I got told how long to shower! It's like being spied on.

spinderella78 · 25/09/2019 22:57

If you said anything to me about my being in the shower too long I would think you were bonkers and immediately look for a new place to live!

I'm 5 minutes on a work day but with hair and shaving legs easily 15 or more. If I was paying to live there I would not appreciate being dictated to around how to wash. Also showers use way less water than a bath do they can be on a while and not use a significant about of water.

goldopals · 25/09/2019 22:57

My hair is thigh length. If I wash it, it takes 15 minutes. Otherwise, my showers are about 3 minutes long

Dollygirl2008 · 25/09/2019 22:57

I'm not saying that I will definitely tell her how long to shower for, but I'm sorry - 20 mins in the shower with the water running is ridiculous - from an environmental point of view if nothing else!

OP if I was paying towards water and electricity (as I would assume a lodger would be) I wouldn't expect to be told how long to spend in the shower either. A PP compared it to staying at a hotel - I 100% agree.

cushioncovers · 25/09/2019 23:00

10 mins

Dollygirl2008 · 25/09/2019 23:00

Maybe - that's a good comparison - I guess I'll just see how it goes. I'm so used to my old lodger that things are bound to be different!

15/20 minutes is quite normal! I've lived with flat mates who've taken similar amount of time and I myself take about that. 10 minutes if I'm not shaving. I shampoo & rinse twice and have long, thick hair, then apply conditioner and wash body and face. I also brush my teeth in the shower in the morning whilst leaving conditioner on, that's another 2 mins and then shaving which I can't rush or I cut myself.

Also lots of people find a shower relaxing and good for their wellbeing, I would be horrified if my housemate was timing how long I took and would most definitely look for somewhere else to live!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 25/09/2019 23:03

What about all the wasted water ? Why is it a waste if she's using it? If she was running it and not in the shower than I agree it's a waste.

10 mins is hardly an excessive amount of time for a shower OP,and tbh I'd think you were joking if you suggested that I turn off the shower in between soaping / washing hair- that sounds grim.

Tryingtogetitright · 25/09/2019 23:06

I'm amazed people can shower so fast... I take about 15 mins even when I'm rushing! I am worried about the water usage (sure I could fill a bath with the amount of water I use). I do try to remember to turn off the shower while I'm shaving my legs but then I get cold. My new life goal is to speed up! I wash my hair twice, condition, wash, shave underarms and legs, rinse out conditioner then wash my face. I don't linger over any of it I don't think.... And I do only shower every 2-3 days so I suppose averages out ok (sink wash in between)...

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 25/09/2019 23:06

Anything from 5 minutes if it’s a quick wash and freshen up to 20 minutes if I’m washing my hair and shaving. I have short hair too, above chin length.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 25/09/2019 23:09

10 minutes? That's nothing! 10 mins is a quick shower for me. I'd say average for me is 15-20 mins and a good shower is 20-30.

Is your shower a bit crap and doesn't have much power? The odd time I've had a shower at my FILs house it takes an age because theres no pressure so it takes a long time to even get my hair wet all the way through to put shampoo on.

Then when you take into consideration conditioner and all the part of your body that you may want to shave...

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 25/09/2019 23:12

I'd like to know if it does actually save anything if you turn off while shaving legs- I'm not sure how you do that anyway, how do you rinse the blade?

One month I went into full on water saving mode to see what I could save- I managed to knock a fiver off the bill.

drivingtofrance · 25/09/2019 23:12

Five minutes max.

However I have very short hair so jump on, shampoo hair. Leave that to rinse whilst soaping up body. Quick face wash a d I'm out.

I do often shower twice a, day though so call it 10 minutes per day.

I'm very conscious of the bills so do my bit.
unlike DH and his 20 minute standing under the water sessions

If your bills are getting too high then that would be time to discuss this with your lodger.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 25/09/2019 23:18

Until the hot water is gone. Shower is the only thing that helps my spinal arthritis.

Monkeyplanet · 26/09/2019 00:00

30 mins in the shower

I wish live-in landlords like you would be honest about your rules and expectations before people move in with you.

My friend was recently a lodger and had a landlady with similar views and nagging about her bills whole charging my friend who was new to the are £50 less than it would cost her to rent her own 1 bedroom flat.

It's so miserly and off-putting.

emojisarentwords · 26/09/2019 00:27

Agree with you completely @Monkeyplanet

Whoops75 · 26/09/2019 00:29

6 minutes approx

I shave in the sink after I shower

DramaAlpaca · 26/09/2019 00:30

I take about 10 minutes, DH about 5. DS(22) is in there for at least 20 minutes.

SnowsInWater · 26/09/2019 01:16

There are water shortages here (Sydney), and water is metered which are two good reasons to keep showers short. I like a couple of minutes with water on high pressure, DH prefers longer with lower pressure. We have trained our kids over the years to keep showers short and that there is no need to shower after being in the pool as it's not heavily chlorinated like a public pool.

Pinkbonbon · 26/09/2019 01:30

...seriously? Lol. If she took half hour showers and left the water running the whole time fair enough. But you were already bitching here after she'd only been in there ten minutes!?!?

Tell her, cause you're clearly nuts and she deserves to find out sooner rather than later xD

Tryingtoslim · 26/09/2019 01:34

I always take 15 minutes to wash my hair and can be up to about 40 if shaving/ washing twice etc. Then 15 minutes to dry my hair with hairdryer

Haidari · 26/09/2019 01:38

Wen i shower i wash all my body then shamphoo my hair then wash my body again then i shave my bits rinse off then i shake off excess water then im out that is about 25 mins in total and if im having a quick shower then its in wash body n hair then out and thats about 10 mins and thats normal for me

Geronimo8 · 26/09/2019 02:52

Is that you MIL?

Monkeyplanet · 26/09/2019 02:58

Ditto on paying towards bills
If you were my landlady and said something, I would be leaving immediately
