I said something mortifying in this interview, no chance of the job now is there?!

I went in today for a role I can work alongside my current studies. It was a lovely company and a friendly atmosphere.

The interview went well and I felt pleased with myself. Until a set of employees came into view and made me say something awful.

The woman was opening a gift someone has just given her... Her grin was huge! My would be boss said "Ahh, she does look happy! What a picture".

I said "Yes! She looks like the cat who licked the flaps!"

What I really meant was the cat who got the cream It came out all wrong. The boss looked a bit stumbled and then patted me on the back to follow the other person who'd interviewed me back to the entrance.

I'm mortified. I've no idea how it came out in such a way. It's horrendous. Since having my DC I've often stumbled on words and used the wrong phrase but normally just in the wrong order.

I could've crawled into a hole and stayed. No chance of that job now, is there?

This happened yesterday late afternoon. They were letting people know Monday.

I'd hire you in a shot! Purely for that sentence, screw whether you were right for the role or not!! But seriously, don't kick yourself too much, we all do it, and it shouldn't impact your chances too much. You'll laugh about this one day as it's BRILLIANT! In fact, I hope to see this resurface on a MN thread in a few months time!

They might think it is a local saying, completely non rude.
In fact you need to start it now in your area of birth so you can refer them back to people saying it in that area

Honestly, don't worry about it.

I don't understand the reference (flaps? Licking them? Whatever) but in an interview for a fairly senior managers job I once said, in answer to a question about how I would manage a v serious and intractable problem that, quote " id be buggered if I knew ".

I was an internal candidate and my answer was true,though less than diplomatic..

Somtimes, being "real" sometimes works for you. Not only did I get the job, I was head and shoulders above the rest including other internal candidates.I

Sometimes being yourself and natural pays dividends.

In retrospect wouldn't advise it, but on that occasion it worked for me.

Managers are human. They’re not robots. We’ve all said something stupid when we’ve been nervous.
I bet they pissed themselves laughing as soon as you were out of earshot.
If you don’t get the job it won’t be because of that. It’ll be because another candidate was more suited to it.
Although I don’t know how you can mistake The cat that licked the cream for The cat that licked the flaps.

Oh bless you. I know how it feels. I used the phrase 'big but' in an interview as in 'but, and it was a big but', and then I stopped and sniggered and said 'big butt' again. WHY? WHY DID I DO THAT? It was for a professional job I was well qualified for and I don't generally go around making arse jokes at work. They smiled awkwardly. I did not get the job. Big butt indeed.

I am shit at interviews and went to bits.

If you did well in the interview and then said that... I'd be hiring you like a shot. If you were mediocre and then said that... I'd have a really good think about others ahead of you. If you did terribly... I'd think it was a total shame.
Don't stress it. The world needs more brain farts to occur. They make everything better :)
