I said something mortifying in this interview, no chance of the job now is there?!

I went in today for a role I can work alongside my current studies. It was a lovely company and a friendly atmosphere.

The interview went well and I felt pleased with myself. Until a set of employees came into view and made me say something awful.

The woman was opening a gift someone has just given her... Her grin was huge! My would be boss said "Ahh, she does look happy! What a picture".

I said "Yes! She looks like the cat who licked the flaps!"

What I really meant was the cat who got the cream Blush It came out all wrong. The boss looked a bit stumbled and then patted me on the back to follow the other person who'd interviewed me back to the entrance.

I'm mortified. I've no idea how it came out in such a way. It's horrendous. Since having my DC I've often stumbled on words and used the wrong phrase but normally just in the wrong order.

I could've crawled into a hole and stayed. No chance of that job now, is there?

This happened yesterday late afternoon. They were letting people know Monday.

My boss would probably have employed me on this alone Grin

CaMePlaitPas · 21/09/2019 21:48

I've spent the last 10 minutes reading this and re-reading this. Hilarious.

glitterbiscuits · 21/09/2019 21:50

Please come back and tell us you got the job! They'd be mad not to have you.

youarenotkiddingme · 21/09/2019 21:52

A good brain fart shows you're human.

Agree with others - the fact you were being normal would encourage me to hire you.

I'd rather a real person than someone who acted Uber professional and experienced in interview who turned out to be a knob. (Can you tell we've had some of these recently?!)

Ellieboolou33 · 21/09/2019 21:53

@sweetmeatsandale that did make me laugh!
I actually got a job offered after calling the interviewer semen his name was shamus 😆

Wrongdissection · 21/09/2019 22:00

Oh dear OP. I’d hire you!

I once apologised to my handbag in an interview. As in I kicked it accidentally as I shuffled nervously in my seat, looked down and without thinking said ‘oh I’m so sorry’.

The panel were Confused

I didn’t get the job - but that’s probably not the reason why 😂

Mooey89 · 21/09/2019 22:03

I’m sorry, but this is the most fantastic thing I’ve heard all day. Just woke up snoring DH laughing out loud 😂

QueefLatifah · 21/09/2019 22:06

Woke the baby up laughing

Hope you get the job and you can reply to the offer with “ woohoo I feel like the cat that licked the flaps”

😂

whattodo2019 · 21/09/2019 22:07

Mortifying but absolutely hysterical!! Please let us know if you get the job

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 21/09/2019 22:24

Id employ you just so I could give you the work nickname 'catflaps'.

Brilliant, OP Grin

MamaGee09 · 21/09/2019 22:25

I’d employ you for that comment! It made me cry with laughter, dh is looking at me strangely!

Tippety · 21/09/2019 22:34

Haha, to be honest a part of any interview, even if subconscious is for the interviewer to gauge whether they can see you being part of the team and working with you; something like that would make me want to work with you Grin and also it's memorable.

fizzandchips · 21/09/2019 22:40

Oh OP, I hope you get the job. It’s been a long time since I properly laughed out loud. So thank you for sharing.

Legoandloldolls · 21/09/2019 22:43

I'm sorry that is too funny 😭 you should have nonchalantly said cream, I'm meant cream.

I have said worse in interviews im sure. Chalk it up to experience. Plus you never know, in my current job I said I'm not interested in staying in career, I want to retrain and leave at some point. I was told after they would have hired me for a lot higher wage than I asked for so you never know!

Accountant222 · 21/09/2019 22:51

I'll tell you the story of a complete fuck up at an interview, but I was offered the job.

DH in motor trade had sold my car just as I was setting off, throws me the keys to one I'd never driven before, an escort cosworth, I wasn't happy but needed to get there.

Parks the bastard thing and the alarm wouldn't stop, nothing I did would stop it. All during the interview I could hear the car alarm, getting increasingly more anxious.

Came out of interview, driving out of this huge company with bastard alarm still going, managed some how to drive the wrong way on a one system, which put me at the wrong side of some traffic lights. Company security guard holds up traffic on a very busy dual carriageway to enable me to make a very awkward turn into the right lane.

DH got the bollocking of his life, selling my car (which wasn't for sale) moments before a very important interview.

Very very surprised I got a job offer after that fiasco.

ThatCurlyGirl · 21/09/2019 23:20

This is AMAZING.

I think it should be added in to the MN dictionary.

Cancel the cheque
Scream at the Sistine chapel
Like the cat who licked the flaps

At least you didn't say pussy, I feel like that would have made it worse - small mercies 😂

If I was the interviewer and you did this I'd like you even more, hire you and bring it up frequently for fun

Smile
Dieu · 21/09/2019 23:45

You are fucking mental. I love you. Grin

sweetmeatsandale · 22/09/2019 09:54

Well all your responses have really cheered me up Grin Thank you!

Hopefully I get the job.

And thanks to the person who reminded me cats have rough tongues!

🤣🤣🤣

Backinthebox · 22/09/2019 10:09

I’m not one of those sorts of people that Louis out loud at stuff I read on a regular basis, but this has had me with tears rolling down my face. Thank you OP, and if you don’t get the job, sit back with satisfaction anyway and know how many people’s day you have brightened.

SamBeckett · 22/09/2019 12:16

@sweetmeat
It could of been worst you could of said its the flaps that got the cream GrinBlush

SamBeckett · 22/09/2019 12:18

I did not intend to strike out that line ! Hmm

iklboo · 22/09/2019 12:22

I am SO stealing that now Grin

FreshwaterBay · 22/09/2019 12:22

At least you have increased your chances by explaining yourself on a public forum and showing you are only human. I hope your potential hirer is a MN subscriber.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 22/09/2019 13:00

I was once asked in an interview "What do you do in your spare time? How do you spend your weekends..."

I think I was 20 at the time and responded with something along the lines of "Friday and Saturday nights are usually spent being sick in a bin or in the gutter following too many drinks...."

I answered honestly and without thinking and as soon as the words left my mouth I died a little inside.

"Well, you'll fit right in here. We all love a messy night out." Was the response of the recruiting director.

I ended up working there for almost 10 years
