A thousand strawberry lollies and the Princess of Liechtenstein - any Cabin Pressure fans around?

I’ve just been binging on Cabin pressure and then I saw this news story - an off duty EasyJet pilot was going on holiday but they were delayed as waiting for a relief crew. He had his licence and was within hours so offered to fly the plane and they accepted. It made me think of Martin’s interview with Swiss Air when he said he never went anywhere without his pilot’s licence!! I think I might need a life Blush

I’d love it to come back!

Love that otter reference. That had passed me by.

XXcstatic · 09/09/2019 12:31

I think my absolute favourite thing is that Martin's captain in Zurich 2 is 'Capitaine Loutre' (French for otter) i.e. a live otter in the flight deck, whether the CAA approves or not

Love that - thank you.

Another Zurich 2 gem that I picked up from a John Finnemore interview is that Carolyn's mobile phone ring tone is from Rigoletto - the opera that Herc made her go to, and that she affected to despise Grin

XXcstatic · 09/09/2019 12:32

Carolyn is basically my spirit animal

On a good day, I'm Carolyn. On a bad one, I'm Mr Birling Wink

OldGreyBoots · 09/09/2019 12:35

Love Cabin Pressure, hardly ever hear anyone talk about it! Any time DDog is lying in an inconvenient place, "here I am don't tread on me" pops into my head Grin

DominicCummingsGilet · 09/09/2019 12:39

"Tell you what, Dear Boy. You marry her for 30 years, then we'll compare notes"

Grambler · 09/09/2019 12:50

I use the 'I've been ringing my "summon an idiot bell"' one when I've been calling the kids down to tea as well. Mr Birling is delightful.

HerculesTheBercules · 09/09/2019 13:03

I’ve just listened to both Zurichs.

In a word: Brilliant.

Grambler · 09/09/2019 13:52

I love the fact Mr Alyakhin is that guy from Horrible Histories Grin

MrsSpenserGregson · 09/09/2019 13:57

I will admit to a fondness for Newcastle too - the only episode without Benedict Cumberbatch - partly because the whole episode is hilarious and partly because of the intro, where Martin appears (played by Tim Goodman-Hill) and the other cast members tell him how different / much better he looks Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/09/2019 14:10

@Frankiestein402 - have you tried Old Harry’s Game on your dd? It’s written by Andy Hamilton, and stars him as Satan. Sounds dark but is actually very funny.

leapyearlover · 09/09/2019 14:19

@Frankiestein402 If you want more Finnemore then Double Acts is repeated occasionally -or you can get it on Audible.

My favourite is Mercy Dash..or maybe Penguin Diplomacy...actually they are all brilliant!

SisyphusDad · 09/09/2019 14:21

Another fan here.

Yverdon-les-Bains and Zurich are so good - I've got a playlist set up just for them.

My other great favourite is Ipswich. "I might be wrong ... Sorry, I really must learn to say that with a straight face."

GoldPaperStars · 09/09/2019 14:23

Oh I’ve found my people!!

My DH and I firmly believe that there is a JF quote (from Cabin Pressure or Souvenir Programme) for any situation. Half the time I think if we were to be secretly listened to the listener would think us quite mad - I don’t think we quite realise how many random JF quotes we include in conversation.

Yellow car.

GoldPaperStars · 09/09/2019 14:24

leapyearlover Penguin diplomacy is (in Arther’s voice) BRILLIANT. Thanks for reminding me of it - I’m off to have another listen.

SisyphusDad · 09/09/2019 14:25

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius,

Absolutely second you on Old Harry's Game (except Series 5, which I've only listened to once). That and CP are my go-to comedies. Elvenquest comes a respectable third.

Any other recommendations very gratefully received.

SisyphusDad · 09/09/2019 14:28

And I'm sure I remember not that long ago a series of one-off JF radio plays, one (the first?) of which was about a man who comes home to find a genteel middle-aged burglar in his house. Not fall-off-your-chair funny, but brilliant dialogue and flawless acting.

DMCWelshcakes · 09/09/2019 14:29

Ah, my people!

We listen to it repeatedly and are always playing Yellow Car. The DC & I once spent a morning working out how many otters you could get into an estate car. (Not as many as on Gertie, regardless of CAA guidelines or the RSPCA's thoughts on the matter).

Bread of Heaven! Bread of Heaven! Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum, yum!

leapyearlover · 09/09/2019 14:33

@SisyphusDad

That's Double Acts that I mentioned above!

SisyphusDad · 09/09/2019 14:35

Thanks @leapyearlover. I've got a dreadful memory for ... well, most things really.

Nomorerainplease · 09/09/2019 14:42

Oh yes we are obsessed!!
Off to see JF’s flying visit next week with v excited DS
We are currently bereft- having listened to them all in repeat at least four times.
What next? Any other
Will def get Double Acts

Nomorerainplease · 09/09/2019 14:45

any other recommendations?

I quite like Cremona and the under under Butler etc. Slightly less keen on the one where they have to jump in the pool for training but I may have just over listened to it
Fave. Oooo that’s tricky. Zurich is a masterpiece as a final swan song. The geese and the ring and X-ray scanner maybe “always goes the extra mile”
John Finnemore please write another radio sitcom. Please.

BirdOffTheWire · 09/09/2019 14:45

Thank you, DominicCummingsGilet for that hint about Cumberbin's Treasures - the daughter pinched my set of the CDs when she went to university years ago and I've never managed to get them to play properly in iTunes. What a find that podcast is Grin
Roger Allam is my hero Grin

XXcstatic · 09/09/2019 14:48

Historically, very few hijackings have been carried out by otters.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 09/09/2019 15:02

So glad I wasn't the only one who thought of that!
