Stuck in a village in Yorkshire - help

So we've let our friends choose a B&B (they don't arrive till tomorrow) and there's literally nothing to do. We're in Monk Fryston - we thought we were going to Harrogate!

Can anyone recommend good bars/restaurants near here? We aren't local... I have no clue Grin

My sister accidentally went to Knaresborough and spent two nights in the actual best Air bnb of all time

At least Knaresborough is a nice small town with a tourist industry and things to do. I've never heard of anyone going to Monk Fryston for the weekend. I'd love to know the friend's thought process in choosing the location. Did she not realise how big Yorkshire is, especially when you take in all of North, south, East and west?

There's a nice signposted walk with story boards commemorating the war of the Roses at Towton if that's your thing.

If you want to eat at the Crooked Billeted in Saxton you might need to book as it gets very busy.

Lotherton Hall is nice but quite expensive as you have to pay even to get into the grounds. Temple Newsham isn't much further and you can park and walk round the gardens and grounds for free, but it does cost to go in the house and/or gardens.

If you're interested in space, you might like the planets, but unless you have bikes or like walking about 13 miles out and back on an old railway line, I'd probably not go any further than Mars.

ThighThighOfthigh · 31/08/2019 05:59

I'm sorry but I'm just pissing myself laughing at the idea of you rocking up to some little village in smart shorts and heels then slowly looking around saying "but i wanted a cocktail".

FuriousVexation · 31/08/2019 06:26

Selby... there is a saying in Yorkshire "normal for Selby" which basically means weird and creepy.

I'm guessing you don't drive since you're saying you're "stuck". Yorkshire is a huge county with plenty to do. Harrogate is totally up its own arse but definitely go to Betty's and have a kedgeree. I'm sure there will be a rural bus along soon. Or go to Leeds and visit The Armory - part of the Imperial War Museum and well worth a visit, especially if you have DC with you!

ThighThighOfthigh · 31/08/2019 06:30

I dare you to go to the pub and ask for a cosmopolitan or apple martini. And take a pic.

greentheme23 · 31/08/2019 06:35

And you thought you were in Harrogate! What!

Come to Leeds. Fab shopping, great bars, restaurants. Royal armouries museum, art gallery, etc etc.

Don't stay in Monk Fryston for the day!

greentheme23 · 31/08/2019 06:39

Leeds is quite dressy. You won't be overdressed there.

TheBigBallOfOil · 31/08/2019 06:50

Go to Betty’s!!
I do wish they would open a bettys near me...but I think if they opened one in the south their heads would all explode.
And while they’re at it, I want a booth’s

Triglesoffy · 31/08/2019 06:54

Did you ask for bottled water and they looked at you as if you were mad?

ThighThighOfthigh · 31/08/2019 07:30

Don't ask for a cappuccino! You'll never get out alive.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/08/2019 07:42

Trig

Well quite, even in backwards Yorkshire villages we know that bottled water is no longer socially acceptable.

It's a shame the OP isn't in MF in 2 weeks' time, as there's a beer festival with obligatory gin and cider bars.

PavlovaFaith · 31/08/2019 07:46

Selby is actually quite a lovely town with a beautiful abbey, good market, growing number of new businesses and is trying hard to improve its image. Sadly, it has a bit of a marred reputation thanks to a good number of its inhabitants and as the saying goes: "It's the people that make the place." Until we have a good old-fashioned plague, it's likely to remain as such Grin

It's a popular choice (especially the villages to the North - Barlby, Riccall, Escrick) for we Yorkies who don't fancy parting with £500k to live in a shoebox!

kierenthecommunity · 31/08/2019 08:08

*I think selby might be the closest place for civilisation?

I can't believe I've just typed that*

😂

Another fun packed evening could be spent in Tadcaster. They have a Sainsbury’s Local and a Subway and everything.

StrongerThanIThought76 · 31/08/2019 08:19

I live fairly close you Monk Fryston and can't understand how you've ended up so far from Harrogate.

There are planned protests in Leeds and York today so if I were you I'd cut my losses, pack up my gear and find a cheap overnight stay in Harrogate as soon as you get up. Lovely lovely traditional northern spa town, lots to do, fab pubs/bars/restaurants.

See the best of what Yorkshire has to offer and more of what you were hoping for the weekend!

Neighneigh · 31/08/2019 08:23

Holy cow there are other people on here from Selby?! Where do you all hide in real life?! I knew it wasn't all bad. I quite like it as a town, the locals are just so fucking miserable over nothing though.

Anyway, monk Fryston. Its OK. Just not a holiday destination. You're only a 45min drive from Harrogate tbh and five minutes to the A1, from where you can go anywhere... Don't go to the owl in Hambleton!! It's utterly shit. If you have a car, get yourselves to York. Or you can get the bus from monk F to selby and a train. Go to Lotherton, Newby Hall, tons of things are around, just not in monk F. Nice little shop though.

RachJx · 31/08/2019 08:39

I think everyone is getting the impression of denim hot pants... they're naice Culotte shorts

Update, I've been awake since 6am because of fucking chickens. The local pubs weren't great so we actually came back to the room and chilled. I've given the other couple a light hearted bollocking for bringing us here

We aren't stuck because of no car, DH just fancied a drink and didn't want to drive.

I thought we'd spend the day in York however this weekend really isn't my weekend is it, planned protests AND Ellie Goulding's wedding in York.

@ThighThighOfthigh Alright, game on. I'll tag you in a pic! I might send you a glimpse of my special shorts as well. Wink

OP has gone quiet. Did it turn into an unexpectedly wild night down the local?

LoveGrowsWhere · 31/08/2019 08:40

X post!

LizzieSiddal · 31/08/2019 08:50

Please don’t go to Asda in Castleford on a naice weekend break. No good can come of this.

😂

ThighThighOfthigh · 31/08/2019 09:32

Culottes? That's as good as Lycra hotpants in MF. Think on lass.

Dowser · 31/08/2019 09:45

Gosh I’m from N Yorks
Haven’t come across monk fryston yet
Yes go to york..especially if you like music...fossgate and swinegate are lively on a night.
MacArthur Glen is the designer outlet
There’s also a vue cinema on the ring road going in direction of Scarborough

Dowser · 31/08/2019 09:52

So that’s where you are, thank you google maps, no wonder I hadn’t heard of it
We tend to stick to the north of york stamping ground.

Ilikethisone · 31/08/2019 10:00

@Dowser Monks Fryston is about a 20 min drive for the designer outlet.

Go through a wood, over the bridge come out in escrick. About 10 mins down the road from it.

It is a little village and its lovely if you want a countryside, little village type break.

I would recommend Monks Fryston hall. I stayed there a couple of years ago and the room and food was amazing. But note some people say it's not so great now.

Again, not somewhere to stay if you fancy a night out on the town. Grin

Ilikethisone · 31/08/2019 10:01

Go through CAWOOD. Not 'a wood'. Blush

oakthorn · 31/08/2019 10:19

Ha ha I can't believe there are so many people here from Selby. Where do you all hide?
What a place to choose for weekend away 🤣🤣🤣🤣 sorry op but that's a shocker. York will be manic today and a fortune in a taxi. Selby really isn't that bad honest guv.
