Stuck in a village in Yorkshire - help

So we've let our friends choose a B&B (they don't arrive till tomorrow) and there's literally nothing to do. We're in Monk Fryston - we thought we were going to Harrogate!

Can anyone recommend good bars/restaurants near here? We aren't local... I have no clue Grin

Oh yeah there is glasshoughton, has some chain pubs/cocktail bars things.

There is this place which is a big standard carvery place. BUT they do the biggest cakes you've ever seen, and they are really really nice. They do them as take aways too.

Deathraystare just don't ask what the candles are for Grin

You guys are making me laugh. DH is fuming, he was expecting a night off good bars and lots to do!

Basically, we know another couple from the North who suggested meeting up. I said yes, she said Harrogate and I said that would be lovely. I've never been. I got sent the booking confirmation link and just booked our rooms. They're not coming till tomorrow but we thought we'd make a weekend of it. Harrogates meant to lovely Grin

Will check out the recommendations now. Anymore are appreciated

Selby comment also made me smile.
Although the Abbey is nice.
Keep driving up the A19 OP you will reach York.

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2019 17:25

You are not far from Xscape in Castleford, which has a big cinema, climbing wall, ski slope, soft play, crazy golf etc and about 100 chain restaurants
It’ll be closed now, but there is a fantastic bakery/cafe/sandwich shop in Snaith called Kitchen, and done nice riverside walks.
Fairburn Ings and St Aidan’s RSPB reserves
Or get in the car and go to actual Harrogate!

It is a bit cheeky that corner or N Yorks. It sticks down into the urban sprawl of W Yorks. It’s not the dales and moors you think of when you think N Yorks.

Plasebeafleabite · 30/08/2019 17:26

I think selby might be the closest place for civilisation?

I can't believe I've just typed that

Me neither

The Crown at Monk Fryston does nice food and is very reasonable

They used to do a quiz night on Fridays I think

actually scrap the xscape place as no cocktail bars, just franky and bennys, TGI Fridays and pizza express now.

But you could go Sking?

Whatnotwot · 30/08/2019 17:28

If your into wildlife I think you can do bat walks on Fridays at St.Aidens.

Plasebeafleabite · 30/08/2019 17:30

I think we should rock up for the BATWALK

Tremendous

StroppyWoman · 30/08/2019 17:31

You're close to the RSPB Fairburn Ings reserve if you fancy it. Watching the kingfishers there is one of my favourite things. St Aidens is slightly further along and also great.

Leeds is brilliant for shopping and eating. York is obviously gorgeous.

You're near Catleford which has a leisure complex with laser tag, climbing, indoor skiing/sledding, mini golf and cinemas if you like that sort of thing (I've spent too many children's parties there!) and a shopping outlet as well,

WrongKindOfFace · 30/08/2019 17:37

I’ve been to that outlet place and it’s quite good. They have a Lindt store which is always a winner for me.

PavlovaFaith · 30/08/2019 17:44

Let's not all jump on the Selby-hating wagon please!! It has its charms Grin Monk Fryston is literally nowhere near Harrogate 😂

RachJx · 30/08/2019 17:47

Because I thought we'd be out in Harrogate I've got some dressy shorts which are quite short but high waisted which I decided to pair with heels.

I'm gonna look such a knob tonight strutting round. Any Tesco's near to buy some joggers? 😂

We're in the Crown now for dinner, it's very villagey but friendly. It's full of builders enjoying their Friday pint. I'm encouraging DH to drink JD to calm down.

We've decided the Outlet tomorrow but I'm not sure about tomorrow night. I don't fancy the Xscape place - we're having a child free weekend so we'll make the most of it.

Sunday seems very far away!!

horizontilting · 30/08/2019 17:47

Are you sure they're not going to Harrowgate? (and sent you the wrong link).

MoobaaMoobaa · 30/08/2019 17:51

Definatly go to the york outlet and catch the park and ride to York, you are so close and there is lots to do there, and it's beautiful.

LoveGrowsWhere · 30/08/2019 17:53

There's a lovely Thai in Escrick you could try for tmrw evening.

MoobaaMoobaa · 30/08/2019 17:57

it looks like the last bus back to the outlet on Sat night is 22.34. There are some great cocktail bars in York.

www.itravelyork.info/park-and-ride/park-and-ride-sites/designer-outlet/timetable/

if you want joggers for tonight there is an asda in Castleford.

LeithWalk · 30/08/2019 17:59

Train to the center of York and Leeds from Church Fenton. Train from South Milford to Leeds.

MoobaaMoobaa · 30/08/2019 18:00

also second the Thai restaurant at Escrick (well it was very good a few years ago when I was there)

Love this thread!!
Probably outing myself here but I couple of decades ago I got married at Monk Fryson Hall - it was lovely then! We used to live in South Milford the next village along - they had a lovely Chinese restaurant but I have no idea if it is still there!! Only lived there for a couple of years though.
You could get the train from South Milford into Leeds - I think it’s still good for shopping & I always liked Harvey Nicks

mrssillysausage · 30/08/2019 18:09

I live up the road, pop by!! X
