Stuck in a village in Yorkshire - help

So we've let our friends choose a B&B (they don't arrive till tomorrow) and there's literally nothing to do. We're in Monk Fryston - we thought we were going to Harrogate!

Can anyone recommend good bars/restaurants near here? We aren't local... I have no clue Grin

There's an Ivy in York which is nice for a drink 🥂

GellerYeller · 30/08/2019 20:12

My sister accidentally went to Knaresborough and spent two nights in the actual best Air bnb of all time.
Is anyone else intrigued as to how OP and her northern friend managed to accidentally book and travel to a B and B nowhere near their preferred destination?! Although I hope she’s having a great time regardless x

Hey im from Selby! Blush
It's not so bad really.
Lots of nice places around monk fryston.
As pp have said the owl at hambleton is nice - fantastic steak.
The Fox at thorpe Willoughby further along the same road.
The saffron is sherburn in elmet is popular with the locals.
You're not so far from pontefract or Castleford either.

DeltaFlyer · 30/08/2019 20:26

Lots of nice restaurants in tadcaster, wetherby, York and Leeds if you don't mind a longer drive

Rosieposy4 · 30/08/2019 20:39

Delta, the saffron is popular because it’s cheap and bring your own booze, and could you honestly recommend cas or ponte for a weekend away!

chomalungma · 30/08/2019 21:06

Booking for Harrogate and ending up in Monk Fryston sounds like the kind of thing RyanAir would do Grin

Cherrysoup · 30/08/2019 21:11

Please don’t go to Asda in Castleford on a naice weekend break. No good can come of this.

PMSL! 😂

Nowt wrong with Pontefract. You could really push the boat out and go and stare at the power station in Ferrybridge, although I fear it’s closed down, looks very quiet when I’ve been past recently.

TiredOldTable · 30/08/2019 21:30

Because I thought we'd be out in Harrogate I've got some dressy shorts which are quite short but high waisted which I decided to pair with heels.

I assume you have never been to Harrogate
Doncaster isn’t far from where you are. If you also have a bra top you will fit right in.

zebrasdontwearbras · 30/08/2019 21:33

Can I just say how much I love this thread on a Friday night Wine

I am definitely going to plan a weekend away in Yorkshire now - although I might leave the smart short-shorts and heels at home Grin

Ilikethisone · 30/08/2019 21:39

Monk Fryston isnt that close to glasshouton and its packed out all weekend.

I used to live in MF now live and work beat escape. The skiing is really expensive and not great.

There loads of village pubs but if you are looking for a good night out, your best bet is york. But it's a bit of a trek.

The problem is with MF that even neighbouring villages are a bit away.

The crown is good, the owl is ok.

MF hall used to be great.

There used to be a pub in escrick called the black bull. That's really nice too

Ilikethisone · 30/08/2019 21:43

I live near here and get 10% off in Asda. I don't go there on a normal weekend.....never mind on a weekend break Grin

@TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross actual tears of laughter at that. 👏

thenightsky · 30/08/2019 21:59

You are only half hour drive to Leeds! Much more fun than Harrigut.

ThighThighOfthigh · 30/08/2019 23:12

Is there an offie and a chippy? You'll be reet. Don't forget your heels though.

Rosieposy4 · 30/08/2019 23:41

Nope, no chippie in MF and the only offie is the village post office owned by the same people that own the B and B, shuts at 7, earlier on weekends.

Orchardgreen · 30/08/2019 23:55

I love Monk Fryston Hall. It’s like Fawlty Towers, but very dog friendly and lovely gardens. Last time I stayed, DDog and I had a good evening in the bar, with lots of other people and dogs.

TonOfLead · 30/08/2019 23:56

...marauding stags and hens ruining the ambiance in York...

I clearly need a holiday myself because when I first read that I briefly thought it was talking about ACTUAL stags and hens - as in deer and chickens ConfusedBlush

catsbeensickagain · 31/08/2019 00:04

If you fancy a really nice restaurant tomorrow hop in the car and go to the Peppered Pig in West Cowick.
Or go to the Rose theatre (a pop up globe theatre) in York which is doing The Tempest/ Henry V/ Twelfth Night/ Hamlet and closes for the season on Sunday. It’s near Spark which is trendy bars etc in shipping containers - and one of the few local bets for the shorts....although it was raining tonight

pumkinspicetime · 31/08/2019 00:04

I've been giving this far too much thought, to avoid tedious chores.
I have decided that you might be better off going to Leeds for your night out.
York has cobbles and isn't great for heels.
If you want a dressy bar based night out I think Leeds might be a better destination (also better than Harrogate)

GellerYeller · 31/08/2019 00:15

Same here. Anyone else hoping for an update tomorrow that the royals/Sheeran/Ora have also accidentally rocked up in this village instead of Castle Howard for the wedding? Via Asda/Aldi/the ski place?!

FrenchSchnoodle · 31/08/2019 00:23

Fantastic thread. I live miles away but I love the local jokes, knowledge and help.

Cakewineorgin · 31/08/2019 00:26

Wish I’d seen this earlier, I’d have driven over and you could have joined me and my mate when we went out for a Chinese. Seriously, the Thai in Escrick is fantastic and York and Harrogate are lovely during the day. I do think Leeds is better for a night out though.
