There were some weird songs in 80s

Animotion -Obsession

bouncingraindrops · 15/08/2019 16:37

The ones that hit me from nowhere and throw me right back are always really shit songs - the other day I heard Paula Abdul's forever your girl and it took me back to the local summer fayre 1989, the radio roadshow with the dishy DJ, the sun, the picnic my mum brought along, the ice cream, the wasp sting Angry

Mileysmiley · 15/08/2019 16:38

this is better quality but still naff

bouncingraindrops · 15/08/2019 16:38

Mines Massive Attack, Teardrop. My life changed dramatically the year I first heard it and it takes me straight back to the utter desperation I felt at the time.

Time has taught me to be careful of mixing my music and emotions too closely. There are certain things I just won't go near if I'm going through hard times, I don't want them to be tainted.

When I picked DS1 up from nursery I used to say 'here we go'. In my mind this led on to '2, 3, 4' and obviously then on to 'Gordon is a moron'.

It is a real problem - like crossing the beams and thinking about stay puft.

DS1 would be shouting in the back of the car 'Gordon is not a moron, Gordon is a train'.

The shame!

The Only Way Is Up - Yazz and the Plastic Population. Sang to it in the nightclub the night is got my A level results and was off to university.

I hated university, very shy and made very few friends. All the promise and happiness of that night didn’t last. Makes me sad to remember how happy I was that night and how sad university made me. Never admitted it as it was always the ultimate achievement for my family.

So many. Some I just can't listen to. Songs that remind me of teenage unrequited love: Tiffany, I think we're alone now and Heart, Alone. A 14 yr old's angst about boys. The sound track to Dirty Dancing, which I played nonstop one summer, hanging out with my mates, wondering when we'd get boyfriends.

The Sunday's album, Reading Writing and Arithmetic takes me right back to 6th form common room, as does Tom's Diner by DNA & Suzanne Vega, and Deelite, Groove is in the Heart.

I was a huge fan of the Stone Roses, can't listen to them anymore as it's too nostalgic and painful.

It's amazing how music can take you back in an instant, then you're left wondering where all the years went Sad

Love At First Sight - Kylie Minogue. Memories of spring 2002, a really happy and carefree time of my life, regularly going to London, working shifts at an airport, loads of friends....those days have gone forever and this tune always makes me nostalgic for that time.

Mileysmiley · 15/08/2019 17:33

Joni Mitchell, A Case of You. An old girlfriend included it on a mix tape she made me. A passionate and turbulent time in my life (ex is a very dear friend still, happily).

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 15/08/2019 22:19

Voyage voyage by Desireless. Takes me right back to the Spanish campsite disco, 1987. Awkward teenager alert. Best holiday ever, though.

Miley Flowers

There are a couple of songs which remind me of the early days of my current job. I'd just left a job I hated, couldn't do anything right and cried most days and got my current one. Started as a maternity cover and was in a city almost two hours drive away so was a huge risk. But I felt so happy, I was dojng the job and life was good. And I'm still there almost ten years on!
They were on the radio all the time as I drove and are
Gotye somebody I used to know
Fun we are young

Most Simon and garfunkel songs remind me of my childhood. Which is odd as I was born in 1979 :o

Malfoof, what you said is exactly it. When I hear songs such as common people, sit down, roll with it, alright it's 1995 again. The sun is out, my A levels are over and I'm just having a crazily good time with my friends and my first love. Then it all comes crashing down when I remember I'm 42, fat, fairly skint and a single mum. My grandma used to talk about how she'd love a time machine to go back to her youth in WW2, see her friends again, go out dancing with grandad etc. That sometimes it was almost painful thinking about how long ago it all was and how adulthood had got in the way basically. I now know what she meant. Goodness knows what I'll be like when I'm 80.

TinselTown in the Rain - Blue Nile . I was at college in Glasgow , this played a lot ( and it rains a LOT in Glasgow !)

Party Fears Two- The Associates . One of my favourite 80s songs . Many years later I was on holiday with DParents and my DC (who were 4 and 6.6 at the time) they'd gone to the beach, I was in the laundrette and this came on.
It was nostalgic for my lost youth and made me really happy for what I had right then. (Two little demons and a pile of washing Grin )

Mileysmiley · 16/08/2019 23:59

Paul Simon - The Boxer

mintich · 17/08/2019 00:10

Sonnet - the verve
Everythings gonna be alright - Sweetbox
Sway - Bic Runga

TemporaryPermanent · 17/08/2019 00:11

Crowded house - first marriage. Anything from Woodface but Weather with you probably pips it.
