What you say about trumps mental deterioration is interesting and I know there is a lot of speculation on this subject!

If you’ve seen people with dementia before there’s telltale signs with the balance and the gait. Next time there are clips of him having to walk, pivot and stop, watch him. He walks with a wide based gait, sort of circumducts a leg to pivot and his balance is dodgy. He has diminished arm swing. When he is doing a rally and standing against the lectern he often grips onto the hand holds, or pushes hard against it with his stomach to help maintain his balance.

A while ago there was this whole thing about how Trump was “scared of stairs” with a montage of clips with people helping him, including Theresa May. It looked neurological and pathological. When I first noticed the gait and did a Twitter search there’s a guy called Tom Joseph who posts all the clips of him walking, twitching etc. Certainly there’s confirmation bias there but there’s something not right. And - he’s pretty old and his dad died of dementia, didn’t he?

Nolongersurprised that sounds about right. I remember on one of the (early-ish) rolling Trump threads on here someone linked to work by a linguistics expert on the way you could compare Trump's TV interviews from 20 years ago with those now and see a marked deterioration in the richness of vocabulary and complexity of grammar (interviews rather than speeches as the latter tend to be written by someone else).

George Conwall’s timeline on Twitter is telling, IMO. He started tweeting quite formally with polite dissent but more recently has openly stated that the president is “nuts”. Obviously through Kellyanne he knows what’s going on. There was this today:

Pragmatically no one close to Trump seems to about Trumps slurred, disordered nonsensical speech so I think the GOP will keep up the pretence until he starts to fall.

It’s so utterly shit the way these things are ‘managed out’ by people with money.

What I found interesting though is how natural and relaxed he looked in the clip when talking compared to the dead behind the eyes monotoned version we see in press conferences and speeches etc.

I have heard someone before suggest he drinks too much. Having watched that I see why.

He's teetotal. Always has been. His brother died of alcoholism and I actually do believe he doesn't drink.

Oh yes - sorry I should have said I thought he didn't drink and didn't think he'd be allowed to by his aides etc. Just I can see where the conversation/rumours started.

I had vestibular neuritis six weeks in bed a few years ago, cannot manage escalaters and some times I get dizzy walking in a straight line, hope no-one thinks I must have dementia.

That’s because he’s following a script and is concentrating quite a lot. I doubt he practices much in advance

Well I do think Trump has definitely suffered mental deterioration another possible explanation is rather fascinating to read, basically there's a case to be made that Trump has very, very poor eyesight and that impacts his reading, his recognition skills and his fear of walking down stairs.
