Unacceptable mess left in caravan

Just after some opinions...if someone left the caravan in this state would you refund their deposit? No dust pan and brush in unit

That's not a level of mess that requires excessive cleaning - it could have been sorted in less time than it took them to take the photos. Maybe retaining the deposit to cover the cost of the change-over clean is part of their business modelHmm

bigredship · 28/07/2019 06:35

I've worked on a holiday park. Shit in the sink is excessive, this is not. Where did you stay?

Delatron · 28/07/2019 09:00

I think it’s fine and they’re taking the piss. Unless the t&c say you must clean and leave as found.

I wouldn’t want to stay in anywhere that expected me to clean loos and mop floors at the end of my stay. I’ll happily pay the cleaning fee. Surely all places have cleaners coming in anyway. I’ll wipe down surfaces etc. But clean for hours before leaving when you’re on holiday? Bit ridiculous and unnecessary. Is it a pride thing?

Do they have a Facebook page or TripAdvisor where you can leave a review?
Its not very messy and they should be getting it cleaned anyway.
If they expect customers to do it, then they should be providing the necessary tools and making it clear what the expectations are.

TeamUnicorn · 28/07/2019 09:30

I imagine they don't pay for professional cleaning in between each stay. So the £30 deposit would likely cover the cost of a cleaner.

It should be cleaned in-between guests, nothing there requires anymore than what would be dealt with on a standard clean.

Booboo66 · 28/07/2019 17:48

That’s just superficial mess that would be sorted within the standard clean they’d have to do anyway. Thebwindow looks damaged, are they trying to say you did that?

Mothership4two · 28/07/2019 18:13

I always hoover holiday homes just before we leave and think to myself "how daft, this is going to be cleaned in a couple of hours". But still do it. Only time I don't bother is when we have airbnbed it and been charged extra for cleaning (£25-35) in the upfront cost.

However, if no cleaning equipment had been left and, even if there were, it was just a bit grubby, I would expect the deposit back. Really it should only be kept if something significant was broken. General wear and tear shouldn't count.

checkeredredshorts · 28/07/2019 18:30

It doesn't justify the deposit being taken away.

But it is very scruffy and thoughtless to leave mess like that.

pointythings · 28/07/2019 18:39

I wouldn't have left it like that - I don't deep clean, but I strip beds, pick up anything left on floors, wipe down counters, make sure all pans, crockery and cutlery is clean, dry and where it belongs.

But it's not enough to warrant withholding a deposit.

Mothership4two · 28/07/2019 18:42

& no OP you weren't lazy, you were on holiday with three kids and probably paid quite a lot to stay there.

Please ignore ppl who are using your post to "have a go" at you. I think the subliminal message you are supposed to get is that THEY would have left the caravan spotless. You didn't ask for a review of your cleaning abilities, you just asked if MNers would expect the deposit back.

I understand it is just the principle not the amount - I would be miffed too!

mathanxiety · 28/07/2019 18:47

Are they blaming you for the broken window frame?

If the frame was in that condition when you arrived then you should have flagged it immediately with them.

The few crumbs, etc on the floor and the oven door are easily dealt with. If they didn't leave any tools to sweep or wipe then they are being unreasonable. Do they expect you to guess what cleaning supplies you might need to bring with you and pack all of that?

YABU for not buying a roll of paper towels though. You could use a few and bring the rest of the roll home with you surely.

nuxe1984 · 28/07/2019 19:11

I stayed in it with my family. I picked as much as I could up by hand. All beds stripped and all bins emptied

And you couldn't pick up an apple OP? What did your last slave die of?

Also one of those photos shows actual damage rather than mess - if it was my caravan I'd be fuming about that.

Seaholly1 · 28/07/2019 19:21

We've run a holiday Park with Holiday homes and log cabins. No way would we mind about this. All our cabins go out cleaned from top to toe- that's our job. Yours is to have a good time and leave it in a reasonable condition - they should be thankful you stripped the beds. I am always suspicious of places that ask customers to clean up - the accommodation provider should sort this so the next occupants have its pick and span. 99% of customers leave the places tidy. I would not be minded to pay anything if that said their only problem.

Delatron · 28/07/2019 19:22

She’s explained she missed the apple and has mobility issues. The damage was already there. Read the thread!

Delatron · 28/07/2019 19:24

I would only stay in places that had professional cleans between guests. You can’t expect guests to clean to the necessary standards and nor should they on holiday. There’s no point vacuuming and cleaning loos for hours. A cleaner will be coming in. Yes empty bins and wipe down surfaces etc but anything extra is a waste of time.

OP it sounds like a scam as £30 is a sum they can try and get away with.

sauvignonblancplz · 28/07/2019 19:38

Holy smokes .... I am a clean freak!! This is not unreasonable, or anything to be ashamed about for goodness !

The OP was on holiday, she knows someone will be in to do the hoovering and mopping after she left.

I clean as I go on holiday however in a more relaxed capacity than I do at home.
The final day, the loo is cleaned , tops wiped and beds stripped; the rest is down to the company.
The rest of the mumsnetters saying they clean for TWO HOURS! Catch a bloody grip!

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/07/2019 19:39

@nuxe1984
Did you miss the bit where op says she has mobility issues. Ffs.

Fowles94 · 28/07/2019 19:52

I would never leave anything in this state, I take my own cleaning products also. I can't believe you often leave stuff/mess like that.

teddypasty · 28/07/2019 19:53

@nuxe1984 you need to get a life then!

Jogonandshutup · 28/07/2019 19:55

I wouldn’t keep a deposit for the bits that can be hoovered but I would keep an amount for the broken window frame. Some of the pics aren’t too clear though - hard to tell what they are

jessycake · 28/07/2019 19:59

Who was it with ? I wouldn't go with them again , I expect to pay a cleaning fee for mess that wouldn't be covered by a standard clean between guests , like burnt on dirt on the oven top or stained carpets and furnishings.

nuxe1984 · 28/07/2019 20:07

Did you miss the bit where op says she has mobility issues. Ffs.

Did you miss the bit where she says she stayed with her family? I'm assuming they didn't all have mobility issues ...

TakeMeToKernow · 28/07/2019 20:07

This thread has me feeling worried. I’m currently in a Siblu Park in France and the cleaning deposit is £130 !!! We could have paid for a clean, but that was £70 :( so I’ll be spending my last morning cleaning like a madwoman.

nuxe1984 · 28/07/2019 20:13

teddypasty

You don't hire somebody else's property - be it a caravan, room, home, whatever - and damage it expecting not to have to pay for any damage.

If it was an accident then you explain and, hopefully, the owner will understand. But if you just leave it and not say anything then yes, fully expect the owner to withhold any deposit so that the damage can be repaired.

It's the same when you rent a property. You pay a deposit and if it's not in reasonable condition when you leave then the deposit will be withheld.

Or are you one of those people who think it's acceptable to damage other people's property and not have any consequences?

It's all about respect ….

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 28/07/2019 20:56

On holiday? You take your own cleaning products on holiday? 😆🤣😂😆🤣😂
