Just after some opinions...if someone left the caravan in this state would you refund their deposit? No dust pan and brush in unit

What does the terms and conditions of deposit refund say?

madeabooboo · 27/07/2019 18:45

It says can hold deposit of excessive cleaning is required or broken or missing items

It's definitely not excessive cleaning if the pictures show the only problem areas. It sounds like they're trying it on OP. How much is the deposit (sorry if I've missed it)?

Its only £30 pounds so not much but it's the principle that has wound me up

huggybear · 27/07/2019 18:54

Why did you leave crisps (?) On the floor then?

madeabooboo · 27/07/2019 18:55

Huggy there are literally a couple of crumbs which I must have missed whilst shepherding three kids including a toddler under my feet

It's hardly a grab bag on the floor ffs

OP posts:
huggybear · 27/07/2019 18:57

My definition of crumbs if clearly different to yours. Anyway I agree they shouldn't keep your deposit

huggybear · 27/07/2019 18:58

But the fact it's £30 is weird. What happens if someone actually causes damage? I've never been somewhere where it's less than £200

stairway · 27/07/2019 18:58

It’s not excessive, unless you are a landlord.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/07/2019 19:02

OP ask to see the receipts for the costs incurred in restoring the place to the condition of was in when you arrived.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2019 19:06

Did they say how they expected you to hoover without a hoover?

LatteLove · 27/07/2019 19:12

It doesn’t look that bad and could be remedied by normal cleaning that I assume they would do before the next guests came into the caravan? I don’t get why someone didn’t at least pick up the apple though.

I would only expect not to have deposit refunded if something was broken/damaged or required beyond normal cleaning eg carpets shampooed.

Ronsters · 27/07/2019 19:21

It's a bit messy and could have been left cleaner, but it's not that bad and doesn't warrant £30.
I think they are taking the piss.

HauntedPencil · 27/07/2019 20:05

When I stay in a caravan I clean everything I can wipe sides take bins out and do the floors as best I can as there is never a Hoover. Clean loo etc.

There are some big bits but I'd expect they are cleaned & hoovered in between guests so that's hardly extra work and in the ketfuffle of leaving sometimes things are missed.

It's 30 seconds of work!

HauntedPencil · 27/07/2019 20:08

That really isn't excessive cleaning. I'd expect that if people haven't emptied bins and left it in quite a state. I can see the apple and a few cornflakes ok you could have picked up but you made an effort to clean everything else so it's hardly excessive.

I'd ask to see receipts to show they had to pay extra for cleaning than ordinarily and ask for what they constitute excessive.

MmmBlowholes · 27/07/2019 22:55

If it isn't excessive then it wouldn't have been hard for you to clean it up, ergo you were lazy.

Thentherewascakes · 27/07/2019 23:04

I think £12 would be fair, £30 is a bit excessive.

You don't pro-rata cleaning fees, so 1 hour should be enough if the rest really is clean.

madeabooboo · 27/07/2019 23:06

Lazy?

OP posts:
Yodude · 27/07/2019 23:09

That's not a mess. Surely they have a cleaner booked for the turn around.

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 27/07/2019 23:12

Lazy? Op has already said she has poor mobility, she's not going to be crawling around on her hands and knees scrubbing the place clean. She was on holiday, that is what the cleaners are for.
A quick wipe around, strip the beds and the washing up is all that is needed.

Iwant2move · 27/07/2019 23:16

Kick up a fuss. I have holiday lets and that wouldn’t bother me. I haven’t with held a deposit yet. Not even when some one blew their nose into the duvet cover! 🤮

regmover · 27/07/2019 23:28

This is bloody ridiculous. It's holiday accommodation and a few crumbs on the floor. You don't need to be a cleaner in a self catering caravan any more than you need to clean a hotel room. The clue in this case is the lack of cleaning equipment.

Dowser · 27/07/2019 23:36

When we stay in hotels or self catering, I strip beds and put them and towels in a pile In The bathroom.
Dh washes up and puts the pots away. Wipes surfaces
I clean the bathroom and put bleach down the loo.
I don’t do floors.
That should all be part and parcel of the accommodations cleaning service.
That’s just normal surface mess after a weeks useage.
If it was my rental I’d be happy with that.

Starfish85 · 27/07/2019 23:37

I imagine they don't pay for professional cleaning in between each stay. So the £30 deposit would likely cover the cost of a cleaner.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't feel the same if they'd kept a £200 deposit (or even much over £30 tbh) but £30 for the inconvenience and actual cleaning seems fair.

I suppose it's a lesson for the future to leave rentals in good condition without food all over the place.

Ontheboardwalk · 28/07/2019 00:46

If I’m on holiday I’d pay a £30 cleaning fee so I don’t have to do a proper clean. I’d obviously do the bins, washing up and wiping down but not much more. I’d leave it tidy.

OP I think you are being ripped off if they think that’s unacceptable and they take your money as the 'deposit'. That should be something completely different as a cleaning fee.

The fact that it’s such a small amount fir a deposit (as PP said that’s usually about £200) makes me think they might try this cleaning scam on with other people
