Lines that break your heart

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

"It's like running through the fire when there is nothing left to save, it's like chasing the very last train when it's too late".

origamiunicorn · 02/08/2019 19:02

The entire song Wires by Athlete, which I assume is about a newborn baby.

"You got wires, goin' in
You got wires, comin' out of your skin
You got tears
Making tracks
I got tears
That are scared of the facts
Running down corridors
Through automatic doors
Got to get to you
Got to see this through
I see hope is here in a plastic box
I've seen Christmas lights reflect in your eyes
You got wires, goin' in
You got wires, comin' out of your skin
There's dry blood on your wrist
Your dry blood on my fingertip
Running down corridors
Through automatic doors
Got to get to you
Got to see this through
First night of your life
Curled up on your own
Looking at you now
You would never know
I see it in your eyes
I see it in your eyes
You'll be alright
I see it in your eyes
I see it in your eyes
You'll be alright
Alright"

The whole song gets me but the line:
"First night of your life, Curled up on your own"
Just sets me off. Every time.

WouldYouLikeAnOmlette · 02/08/2019 19:44

origamiunicorn it is about the lead singers daughter's first night alive.

I've never really put that whole song together and now it's another one for me to avoid and I suppose every other NICU parent too SadConfused

FudgeBrownie2019 · 02/08/2019 19:58

It's ridiculous because it's from a Disney film, but in Lilo and Stitch, Stitch says to the Grand Council before they take him away "This is my family. I found it all on my own. It's little and broken but still good. Yeah, still good" and it breaks me each time I watch it.

Springfern · 02/08/2019 20:13

I don't wanna talk about it. How you broke my heart

Good old Rod Stewart

LadyOfTheCanyon · 02/08/2019 20:26

When Hester and Lee die in The Subtke Knife:
Then she was pressing her little proud broken self against his face, as close as she could get, and then they died.

beanaseireann · 02/08/2019 21:06

"...and I shall hear tho soft you tread above me.
And oh my grave will warmer, sweeter be.
For you will bend and tell me that you love me.
And I will sleep in peace until you come to me."

From "Danny Boy"
Sad

I was lucky enough to hear Leonard Cohen say those words at his amazing (first) concert in The Royal Hospital Kilmainham about ten years ago.

Puppylucky · 02/08/2019 21:19

Wow thanks to the poster that shared tea and sympathy by Janis Ian. That is an amazing piece of poetry even if you don't know the song

writersbeenblocked · 02/08/2019 21:45

"And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am"

  • Not sure what this song is called but this is the song I immediately thought of. Also from that song - "You bleed just to know you're alive."

"I'm trying to be strong,
Reaching out, holding on.
Alone in my bed."

  • Wrap Your Arms Around Me

The whole of Past, Present and Future by Agnetha Faltskog:

"(Past) Past - well now, let me tell you about the past.
Past is filled with silent joys and broken toys,
Laughing girls and teasing boys.
Was I ever in love?
...I called it love -
I mean... it felt like love.
There were moments when...
Well, there were moments when...

Go out with you?
Why not?
Do I like to dance?
Of course.
Take a walk along the beach tonight?
I'd love to.
(But) Don't try to touch me.
Don't try to touch me.
Because that will never happen again.
Shall we dance?

(haunting instrumental)

Tomorrow? Well... tomorrow is a long way off.
Maybe someday I'll hold somebody's hand.
Maybe somewhere someone will understand.
You know - I used to sing: "A tisket, a tasket, a green and yellow basket"
I'm all packed up and I'm on my way and I'm gonna fall in love.
But at the moment, it doesn't look good.
At the moment it will never happen again -
I don't think it will ever happen again."

StCharlotte · 02/08/2019 21:52

It's been seven hours and fifteen days

Oh yes. Especially as I bought the single the night before a break-up.

I also cry at the "Daddy my daddy" scene but it's the music that gets me. The line actually makes me wince.

DrPeppersPhD · 02/08/2019 22:01

"Just give it one more try to a lullaby" Lullaby by Nickleback.
"I am longing to see you again it's been so long" The Swan Song by Within Temptation, meant a lot to me when I was suicidal because I felt the only person who'd ever given a shit about me was my great grandmother who'd died 10 years previously, I thought if I died I might get to see her again.
Any of the lyrics to Monster from the Frozen musical, or Monster by Imagine Dragons.
"You did your worst, you tried your best, now it's time to rest" I See the Fire in Your Eyes from RDR2.

On a happier note, "it feels like a long time coming fam" from Written in the Stars by Tinnie Tempah, finally connected with me when I was on Anti-Depressants and happy for the first time in years, I felt like I'd finally won.

The handbags and the gladrags, that your poor old grandpa had to beg to buy you

The 9/11 remix of Heaven by DJ Sammy. Having a parent pass away (not in 9/11 and approx 8 years before that) it hits home every time and makes me sob.

The Rainbow Bridge poem does the same.

nordstrom · 03/08/2019 20:59

"Eleanor, Eleanor
I would do anything for another minute with you because
It's not getting easier, it's not getting easier"

Biffy Clyro

there is a band called nieves that break my heart with everything they’ve ever done.

The Menzingers have a a few lines that floor me:
“When I thought life had a purpose, when I was sure the whole things worth it, damn the days we took for granted, never again will I let anyone close to me.”

And the last paragraph of Middlemarch makes me weep, but I couldn’t tell you why.

"Loneliness" by Annie Lennox

Loneliness
Is a place that I know well
It's the distance between us
And the space inside ourselves
And emptiness....
Is the chattering in your head
It's the call of the living
And the race from life to death
Woa and I know
Yes and I know
What you feel...

And I've got a longin'
That's hard to find
Won't give me no peace of mind
Something that I've lived with all along
Days and weeks and months and years
Filling in the time my dear
Tryin' to find the place where I belong

Hopelessness
is the darkness in your heart
It's the sound of one hand clapping
While it's pulling you apart
Woa and I know
Yes and I know
What you feel

And
I've got a longin'
That's hard to find
Won't give me no peace of mind
Something that I've lived with all along
Days and weeks and months and years
Filling in the time my dear
Tryin' to find the place where I belong

And
I got a hunger that's
Hard to fill
Driving me on overkill
Tellin' me that everything's gone wrong
Got me a need
That I can't break
More than I can hardly take
Somehow I still keep on going strong

When I call your name
I'm gonna scream out loud
I'll say...
"here I am standing in the crowd"
You'll say "come to me"
With your open mind
you never know
What you still might find"
But you keep me here
Like a cancelled flight
An empty train
Running through the night
An orphan child
A broken shoe
and I'm still down here
Looki' out for you
Are you there for me?
'Cause I'm here for you

AndromedaPerseus · 03/08/2019 22:17

Sung beautifully by Dcs school choir as part of the WW1 100th anniversary remembrance service last year and felt very moved by the words:
Keep the home fires burning - Ivor Novello
They were summoned from the hillside
They were called in from the glen,
And the country found them ready
At the stirring call for men.
Let no tears add to their hardships
As the soldiers pass along,
And although your heart is breaking
Make it sing this cheery song
Keep the Home Fires Burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out
'Til the boys come home.
Overseas there came a pleading,
"Help a nation in distress."
And we gave our glorious laddies
Honour bade us do no less,
For no gallant son of freedom
To a tyrant's yoke should bend,
And a noble heart must answer
To the sacred call of "Friend."
Keep the Home Fires Burning,
While your hearts are yearning,
Though your lads are far away
They dream of home.
There's a silver lining
Through the dark clouds shining,
Turn the dark cloud inside out
'Til the boys come home.

The song 'Goodnight Sweetheart', it was played at my lovely nans funeral and even just writing the words make me tear up

follygirl · 05/08/2019 17:50

We played 'Time to say goodbye' at my father's funeral. I didn't get to say goodbye as I didn't make it to the hospital in time and I still miss him nearly 13 years later:

Time to say goodbye
Horizons are never far
Would I have to find them alone
Without true light of my own with you
I will go on ships over seas
That I now know
No, they don't exist anymore
It's time to say goodbye
So with you I will go
On ships over seas
That I now know
No, they don't exist anymore
It's time to say goodbye
So with you I will go...
I love you
