Lines that break your heart

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

"I crumble completely when you cry"

505 - Arctic Monkeys

The whole song, but that line in particularly always gets me

TarragonSauce · 27/07/2019 22:42

Song for your heart, and when it is quiet,
I know what it means and I'll carry you home.

If it comes on the radio whilst I'm driving, I still have to pull in and sit for a minute, even after all these years.

U2 - 'Walk ON'

"You could have flown away
A singing bird in an open cage
Who will only fly, only fly for freedom"

cavalier · 27/07/2019 22:53

Bright eyes, burning like fire
Bright eyes, how can you close and fail?
How can the light that burned so brightly
Suddenly burn so pale?
Bright eyes 😥

Because the best shield is to accept the pain
Then what can really destroy me?

Ploppymoodypants · 27/07/2019 22:57

My lovely mum bought me this book linked below. It’s called Someday. I am yet to meet anyone who can read it without choking up

From the new Mary Poppins film - all about loss but with hope. 'Where the lost things go'

Memories you've shared, gone for good, you feared
They're all around you still, though they've disappeared
Nothing's really left or lost without a trace
Nothing's gone forever, only out of place

“Please don’t take my sunshine away”

Paddingtonthebear · 27/07/2019 23:12

And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?

Love and a necklace , from Love Actually

waltzingparrot · 27/07/2019 23:25

My dad died when I was 13, so 'Papa, can you hear me?' sung by Barbra Streisand breaks my heart.

Papa how I love you
Papa how I need you
Papa how I miss you
Kissing me goodnight

The more we rush about, the less we do
I never saw you drift away
The more we spin around, the less we move
I never saw your spirit break
I wish that I could be a journey’s end
But you are only passing through

Keane - Watch how you go

But you can't go back
To what it never was
To repossess, what you never owned

Sissel - Better off alone

When it never came true never happened to you
It just slowly faded away ‘til it broke your heart

Tom Paxton - The Losing Part

Following on from Coldplay Fix you. I saw my mum once in the four months before she was murdered. I couldn't handle her alcoholism so I had to distance myself alongside my twin. The one time I saw her before her death I had recently started a relationship with my now husband. She said I had a twinkle in my eye and she was proud of me as I seemed happy and contented with a glint in my eye. My biggest regret is that despite all of her issues she never met my wonderful husband. I know she'd have loved him.

Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face
You told me how proud you were, but I walked away
If only I knew what I know today
Ooh, ooh
I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away
Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To hear your voice again
Sometimes I wanna call you
But I know you won't be there
Ohh I'm sorry for blaming you
For everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself by hurting you
Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit
Sometimes I just wanna hide 'cause it's you I miss
And it's so hard to say goodbye
When it comes to this
Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?

I hope she would be proud xx

'Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play'

The whole of Two beds and a coffee machine by Savage Garden 💔 it’s about domestic violence and makes me cry every time, even though I thankfully can’t relate to it at all.

and there are children to think of
Baby's asleep in the back seat
wonder how they'll ever make it
through this living nightmare
but the mind is an amazing thing
full of candy dreams and new toys
and another cheap hotel
two beds and a coffee machine
but there are groceries to buy
and she knows she'll have to go home

Pink - Beam Me Up

Could you beam me up,
Give me a minute, I don't know what I'd say in it
Probably just stare, happy just to be there holding your face
Beam me up,
Let me be lighter, I'm tired of being a fighter, I think,
A minute's enough,
Just beam me up.

Kate Rusby - Lullabies

Lay me down gently, lay me down low,
I fear I am broken and won't mend, I know.
One thing I ask when the stars light the skies,
Who now will sing me lullabies,
Oh who now will sing me lullabies.

In this big world I'm lonely, for I am but small,
Oh angels in heaven, don't you care for me at all?
You heard my heart breaking for it rang through the skies,
So why don't you sing me lullabies,
Oh why don't you sing me lullabies.

I lay here; I'm weeping for the stars they have come,
I lay here not sleeping; now the long night has begun.
The man in the moon, oh he can't help but cry,
For there's no one to sing me lullabies,
Oh there's no one to sing me lullabies.

Karine Polwart - Waterlilly. Based on an incredibly tragic true story.

Caught between the air and the windless deep
You float like a lily flower
And you look just like you fell to earth to sleep
And you're waiting for your waking hour
And I swear to God I saw an angel hand attend you
But that was just the dancing of the light
No mortal or immortal did deliver or defend you
All hands have forsaken you tonight
Are you dreaming of a lover who will carry you away?
And keep you from the crying of the crowd?
No cradle in the rushes, you are broken like the day
And darkness all around you like a shroud
And I swear to God I saw an angel hand attend you
But that was just the dancing of the light
No mortal or immortal did deliver or defend you
All hands have forsaken you tonight
When they finally surrounded you, did any of them face you?
And did you curse the moon and stars above?
Those cruel arms abandoned you for water to embrace you
Won't you lay your head, my waterlily love?
And I swear to God I saw an angel hand attend you
But that was just the dancing of the light
No mortal or immortal did deliver or defend you
All hands have forsaken you tonight
Cau

Fresh prince - "You know, It ain't like I'm still five years old, you know? Ain't like I'm gonna be sittin' up every night askin' my mom "When's Daddy comin' home?

Oh gosh this. The whole speech. It’s just so real and raw and (sadly) relatable

FloofyHeckonChonker · 28/07/2019 02:28

Not a song lyric but when Uncle Bryn reads a letter to Stacey from her dad on her wedding day. My dad died when I was 9 and on my wedding day I'd have given anything to have him by my side. In the Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics was number 1 the day he died. I'd just been told of his death and that song was playing on Top of the Pops in the background. When I gave birth to ds in 2004 someone on the ward had the radio on and that came on. When the part about hearing his dad's voice/echo in his baby's newborn tears I just couldn't stop crying. I'm not a religious or spiritual person in anyway but when the lovely elderly and Irish tea lady asked me if I was ok and did I need her to get somebody I told her about the song and she said I was lucky to get a message from my daddy saying he was with me. It did bring me comfort I must say.

'And we're all just passengers tonight, and we're all just travelling through our lives, we will reach our destination, just hang on for the ride, say a prayer and close your eyes, it's just a little turbulence'
