Lines that break your heart

I'm just watching a Queen documentary on tv.

Many songs move me, but no single lyric breaks my heart like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all" Sad. The utter, desolate sadness of that simple statement, socks me every time I hear it.

Tea And Sympathy
Janis Ian

I don't want to ride the milk train any more
I'll go to bed at nine, and waken with the dawn
and lunch at half past noon
Dinner prompt at five
The comfort of a few old friends long past their prime
Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days long gone
Let's drink a toast to those who most
believe in what they've won
It's a long long time 'til morning
plays wasted on the dawn
I'll not write another line,
for my true love is gone
And when the guests have done
I'll tidy up the room
I'll turn the covers down
and gazing at the moon
will pray to go quite mad
and live in long ago
when you and I were one, so very long ago
Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days long gone
Let's drink a toast to those who most
believe in what they've won
It's a long long time 'til morning
plays wasted on the dawn
I'll not write another line,
for my true love is gone
And when I have no dreams
to give you any more,
I'll light a blazing fire
and wait within the door,
and throw my life away
"I wonder why?" they all will say
And now I lay me down to sleep,
forever and a day
Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days are dead
Let's drink a toast to those who best
survived the life they've led
It's a long long time 'til morning,
so build your fires high
Now I lay me down to sleep,
forever by your side

I would rock my soul/In the bosom of Abraham/I would hold my life/in his saving grace

I would walk all the way/From Boulder to Birmingham/if I thought i could see/I could see your face

From Boulder to Birmingham by Emmylou Harris, written about her partner Gram Parsons who died aged 26. Also contains the line ‘The hardest part is knowing I’ll survive’.

@MotherOfSoupDragons Flowers

@Isthebigwomanhere I was also going to say "This woman's work" by Kate Bush. Makes me cry thinking of my labour with DD.

I forgot this poem, from House Of Leaves. I can’t read it any more. When I first read it I sent it to my mum and it became one of her favourites too.

You shall be my roots and
I will be your shade,
though the sun burns my leaves.

You shall quench my thirst and
I will feed you fruit,
though time takes my seed.

And when I'm lost and can tell nothing of this earth
you will give me hope.

And my voice you will always hear.
And my hand you will always have.

For I will shelter you.
And I will comfort you.
And even when we are nothing left,
not even in death,
I will remember you.

And you won't understand
But you will learn someday
That wherever you are and whatever you face
These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world

Tim Minchin talking to he infant daughter about family.

"And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone"

  • Evanescence, My Immortal

I never made promises lightly
And there have been some that I've broken
But I swear in the days still left
We'll walk in fields of gold

LivinLaVidaLoki · 28/07/2019 07:43

"I used to bring you sunshine, now all I ever do is bring you down"
Too much love will kill you by Queen

Bobbindobbin · 28/07/2019 10:41

Got to get to you
Got to see this through
I see hope is here in a plastic box
I've seen christmas lights reflect in your eyes

DaisyChains6 · 28/07/2019 11:19

"If all my friends have forgotten half their promises
They're not unkind, just hard to find
One look at you and I know that I could learn to live

Without the rest, I found the best"

Won't last a day without you - The Carpenters

Always stuck out for me when friends have said just talk when you need to then no where to be seen when do.

joystir59 · 28/07/2019 13:23

"Everything has a crack in it, that's how the light gets in" Leonard Cohen

Clawdy · 28/07/2019 17:05

"I get along without you very well,
Of course I do
Except to hear your name
Or someone's laugh that is the same....."

Then the last lines :
"I get along without you very well
Except perhaps in Spring,

But I should never think of Spring
For that would surely break my heart in two."

TurnAroundWhenPossible · 28/07/2019 17:10

Paul Simon..
"losing love is like a window in your heart; everybody sees you're torn apart, everybody feels the wind blow"

Rankellior · 28/07/2019 18:10

These lines from Fleabag recently

Fleabag: “I don’t know what to do with it.”

Boo: “With what?”

Fleabag: “With all the love I have for her. I don’t know where to put it now.”

This sums up how I feel after my mum died. In fact the whole of PWB’s depiction of life after the death of Fleabag’s mum and the complicated relationship she has with her father I found to be very well observed and so beautifully articulated.

Rainonmyguitar · 29/07/2019 12:34

Phil Coulter's The Town I Loved So Well about his life growing up in Derry. This verse kills me but especially the last line.

But when I returned how my eyes have burned
to see how a town could be brought to its knees
by the armoured cars and the bombed-out bars
and the gas that hangs on to every breeze.
Now the army's installed by that old gasyard wall
and the damned barbwire gets high and higher
with their tanks and their guns, oh my god what have they done
to the town I loved so well

TinyTickler · 29/07/2019 21:17

You think your days are ordinary
And no one ever thinks about you
But we're all the same
And she can hardly breathe without you

She has no time by Keane.

TakeManhattan · 29/07/2019 21:55

Got to give a little of the love inside
Not to take it all
And watch me fall
I got me loving you
I had you loving me

Reminds me of when my first love got engaged not long after we broke up

HennyPennyHorror · 30/07/2019 04:42

Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just round the corner.

All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

In The Lion The Witch & The Wardrobe when Lucy and Susan think Aslan is dead. I love the whole book both as a child and as an adult for different reasons. I howled through the whole movie when it came out at the cinema.

snowbear66 · 02/08/2019 18:12

This Scott Walker song sung so beautifully:

She stands all alone
You can hear her hum softly
From her fire escape in the sky
She fills the bags 'neath her eyes
With the moonbeams
And cries 'cause the world's passed her by

Didn't time sound sweet yesterday?
In a world filled with friends
You lose your way

She's a haunted house
And her windows are broken
And the sad young man's gone away
Her bathrobe's torn
And tears smudge her lipstick
And the neighbors just whisper all day

Didn't time sounds sweet yesterday?
In a world filled with friends
You lose your way

Whocansay · 02/08/2019 18:23

Not a line, but a verse:

"I wasn't there that morning when my Father passed away,
I didn't get to tell him all the things I had to say.
I think I caught his spirit, later that same year,
I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years"

The Living Years by Mike & The Mechanics. It's a beautiful song, but I have to leave the room / turn off the radio when it comes on, as I end up in floods of tears.

I'm off again now. Gah! Every bloody time!

happypotamus · 02/08/2019 18:25

Just about everything by Frightened Rabbit, but especially Floating In The Forth (for those who don't know Frightened Rabbit, the band's lead singer who wrote the song died last year and his body was found in the Firth of Forth), making this one of the most heartbreaking songs.

So you just stepped out
Of the front of my house
And I'll never see you again
I closed my eyes for a second
And when they opened
You weren't there
And the door shut shut
I was vacuum packed
Shrink-wrapped out of air
And the spine collapsed
And the eyes rolled back
To stare at my starving brain
And fully clothed, I float away
(I'll float away)
Down the Forth, into the sea
I think I'll save suicide for another day
And I picture this corpse
On the M8 hearse
And I have found a way to sleep
On a rolled up coat
Against the window
With the strobe of the sun
And the life I've led
Am I ready to leap
Is there peace beneath
The roar of the Forth Road Bridge?
On the northern side
There's a Fife of mine
And a boat in the port for me
Fully clothed, I'll float away
(I'll float away)
Down the Forth, into the sea
I'll steer myself
Through chopping waves
As manic gulls
Scream "It's okay"
Take your life
Give it a shake
Gather up
All your loose change
I think I'll save suicide for another year

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 02/08/2019 18:26

"Its beautiful Molly" as Patrick Swayze to heaven in Ghost 😩

Squiff70 · 02/08/2019 18:44

"And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's meant to be broken
I just want you to know who I am"

Iris - Goo Go Dolls

All the lyrics by My Immortal - Evanescence

Squiff70 · 02/08/2019 18:45

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It's full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing
But I
I love it when you read to me
And you
You can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact that's where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb
But I
I love it when you sing to me
And you
You can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It's full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we're all too young to know
But I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
And I
I love it when you give me things
And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
You ought to give me wedding rings

The Book of Love - Peter Gabriel
