If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

I always wonder this as well - especially when people have young kids. Last thing I want to do when I have a free couple of hours is the food shop!

Chuffingchuff · 26/07/2019 20:56

I dont because I like to choose what I have, and we have different things each week so I think it would take me too long to search for things online.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 26/07/2019 20:57

Because I shop in Lidl. Used to have Tesco delivery when I was pregnant, but didn't seem to get much for our money. Other shops were either useless Asda or don't deliver to our area. We do a bulk order with Tesco once every so often for certain brands, bulky items, etc but mostly shop in Lidl. Prefer the quality and our money goes a lot further. We eat really well. In and out in half an hour.

Oh yeah, Lidl Aldi and Netto shoppers, I’ll give you that!

I shop in aldi. I can go alone and it takes 15 mins max.

Anyone spending more than an hour on the shop is a loon.

Crunchymum · 26/07/2019 20:59

I do an online shop every week, but I still also go to the supermarket.

Some stuff I prefer to buy in person.

EssentialHummus · 26/07/2019 20:59

I do some online shopping but a) I actively enjoy Lidl for both price and experience and b) heading to the shops is actually an activity with my toddler, so we do it twice a week - short walk, browse of the shop, chat, ride on the toy car.

newmomof1 · 26/07/2019 20:59

I like to see what I'm picking in terms of fruit, veg, bread.

Tryingtoocope · 26/07/2019 20:59

I like shopping, it gives me a chance to change the meal options for the week when I see something I fancy. The offers are all laid out and I get to choose my meat/fruit/vegetables rather than someone else's opinion of what's 'fresh'. I've tried online and I don't get it 🤷‍♀️

Rhubardandcustard · 26/07/2019 21:00

I have coeliac disease - kept getting substitutes that I couldn’t eat that I had to keep returning. Much safer for me to pick my own, can’t expect the pickers to be able to chose a safe gluten free product if the one I’ve asked for isn’t available.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 26/07/2019 21:00

I don’t know really. I think I should but I don’t.Confused

Madvixen · 26/07/2019 21:00

I online shop most of the time but I really miss my yellow sticker bargains.

PullingMySocksUp · 26/07/2019 21:00

Chuffing my list of favourites contains everything I’ve ordered once (I remove daft stuff like a Xmas pudding) but still is only five pages long to flick though and tick. It’s only the odd thing I have to search for.

Interesting to hear, hadn’t thought of that.

I guess the arse of the first shop is something people find easy to put off.

I had time while stuck to a sofa with a baby IIRC. Grin

I love doing the food shop! Mine takes about an hour.

BizzzzyBee · 26/07/2019 21:02

Tesco lets you spend your points on delivery so it’s free. The problem is that they send you all the crap, the stuff with short dates or bruises etc. They don’t pick out the best quality items with the longest dates like you would yourself. I find myself complaining every other week.

And if one item is out of stock you can’t compensate - e.g. if you want five ingredients for a recipe and one is out of stock you’d put the other four back and buy stuff for a different recipe instead. But when it’s delivered they’ll just send you the other four ingredients, which are useless to you without the fifth. And if you reject those four because they’re no use then you have no food!

I don't buy plastic and I like to have control over what I buy

Thebookswereherfriends · 26/07/2019 21:04

Because I'm trying to reduce my plastic usage, so going to the local farm shop for my fruit and veg where I can use my own net bags, the butchers for my meat so I use my own containers and buying the bare minimum in the supermarket. Yes, it's much more time consuming, but I feel its necessary.

Starlight456 · 26/07/2019 21:04

I have done online shopping a few times but my first time half my shopping was missing left in van , second ridiculous substitutions eg a Vindaloo instead of a Korma , I didn’t bother again .

I also tend to go to Aldi as it’s cheaper.

lovelyjubilly · 26/07/2019 21:04

I have to park in Aldi to take my kids to school every day so I just whizz round getting what I need on a day-to-day basis. It takes me about 5 mins per day.

BitchQueen90 · 26/07/2019 21:06

I don't do it for 2 reasons - number one because there is only myself and 6yo DS at home so I don't really feel like I buy enough to justify online shopping. And number two is because I like to choose my meat/fruit/veg. Also every time I've done an online shop they've had to substitute at least one item, I always find what I need in store!

MerryDeath · 26/07/2019 21:06

i like to go food shopping. not with my toddler mind you! for me I'm not organised enough to do one big shop per week so it didn't work very well for us when we used to use ocado (i do love ocado, but i kept fucking it up. i once reserved a slot with a single bottle of champagne and totally forgot to return to my basket... was v sheepish when the driver turned up with that). also I'm reereally fussy about fruit and veg and really like to pick that myself. we do have another baby on the way though and it's bad enough when i have to cart #1 along so i'll doubtless be trying a bit harder to meal plan. yawn.

coconuttelegraph · 26/07/2019 21:07

I get different things from different shops, I couldn't do a whole shop in any of the ones that do online delivery. I don't mind shopping at all.

harrypotterfan1604 · 26/07/2019 21:07

I tried online shopping after my dd was born, the first 6 weeks were chaos and I wanted DP home from work asap rather than him going shopping so we tried online. Didn’t like it at all, I felt like we spent a fortune and got barely anything for our money. We also like to eat lots of different things and wandering round looking at what’s on offer gives me inspiration usually.
It was handy while we got used to becoming parents though but we soon went back to actual shops

BobTheFishermansWife · 26/07/2019 21:08

I've started doing online in the past few weeks since I had DC as it's easier, no other reason, I actually prefer going to the shop as I genuinely enjoy shopping, it's not as easy with a 2 week old to get out the house when he wants boob as soon as he senses I'm wanting to do something 😂
