If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

We tried online shopping a few times. Loathed it.

They bring a billion plastic bags. No it doesn't matter that they recycle the bags. We don't use or need carrier bags. It's important to me to reduce not recycle. I don't want crate clutter, either.

Dunno about nowadays, but 12 yrs ago, they charged for delivery: I can cycle to supermarket for free.

I can get £60 of stuff in panniers (ok, £40 if Lidl) and £100+ if I take the trailer. Cycling meets my needs. So low carbon delivery compared to vehicle delivery. I think online shopping the items are actually chosen at a superstore within 30 miles? And then transported to homes in the large van.

Lidl doesn't do online shopping. We buy about 1/4 of our stuff from Lidl.

Substitutions: so hard to figure out what to get. Inevitably said no subs and ended up having to go to supermarket anyway.

We end up having to go to supermarket for something else forgotten anyway.

Inconvenient, having to wait in & not go get stuff when I needed it.

Planning headache, trying to calculate how much we needed until next time rather than play by ear and just buy when we need.

Some delivery drivers are pillocks to other road users.

Local supermarkets are open until 9pm (rural east Anglia). Usually can get to when I need to, so not like my physical shop opportunity is restricted.

In favour of online shopping, it's easier to find stuff online than searching a physical shop. Am still not used to how our Sainsbo reorganised itself a year ago.

I enjoy food shopping!

MangoSpice · 26/07/2019 21:08

I don't do it as it's not available in my area.

Because I buy a lot of fresh stuff and every time I've done an online shop the fresh stuff has either been knocked about, missing entirely or is close to the use by date so goes off too quickly.

There is also always a substitution and it's almost always bonkers.

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 26/07/2019 21:10

I take my daughter to her club and then I take my mum to Tesco. We have a cuppa and a chat and do our weekly shop. Then I drive back and pick up my daughter. Just makes sense for me

PixieLumos · 26/07/2019 21:10

Because I shop in Aldi and Lidl, I like to find good sell by dates, I don’t want to pay the delivery fees and to be honest I don’t mind doing it - DS who is 1 seems to enjoy it too (if he starts to hate is and begins to regularly scream the shop down I might convert Grin)

Doilooklikeatourist · 26/07/2019 21:10

I shop in Tesco , I like to do my own shopping

Also , Tesco has a large free car park ( up to 3 hours ) so I can walk to the bank , post office , M & S , TK Maxx etc and have a mosey round town

I work from home , and like to get out sometimes !

Teachermaths · 26/07/2019 21:11

Getting there is a 3 minute job. All in all I can be back home well within 25 minutes. I can pick my own veg and fruit so don't get any old crap. I can take advantage of any offers. I don't have to wait in for a delivery slot. I don't get why most people do shop online.

ForeverBubblegum · 26/07/2019 21:11

I shop online sometimes, but I'm generally quite disorganized so when I go shopping it's because we've run out of food. If I order online it will be a couple of days before I can get a reasonably priced delivery slot so if I have to go to the shop to get stuff for that couple of days, I might as well do the lot.

simplyhaving · 26/07/2019 21:12

Because I do it right and no one else can do it right, especially the home shoppers who aren't particularly bothered about doing it right!

TroysMammy · 26/07/2019 21:13

I shop when I need things eg milk, fruit and veg so if I do a weekly shop it can only add up to £30 ish as I have well stocked freezers and store cupboards. I'm not loyal to any shop but use Lidl mainly. Also can't bear the thought of anyone choosing food with best before and use by dates. I like to be in control of my shopping.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/07/2019 21:14

Tesco lets you spend your points on delivery so it’s free. The problem is that they send you all the crap, the stuff with short dates or bruises etc. They don’t pick out the best quality items with the longest dates like you would yourself. I find myself complaining every other week.

I think this massively depends on your local branch, not the company. Our local tesco almost always sends good stuff with long dates, but I once did a shop to arrive to a cottage we were renting and it was all awful quality. They had also substituted some vegetarian products for ones containing meat, which our local one has never, ever done in the three or four years I've been getting regular online shops there.

negomi90 · 26/07/2019 21:15

I have an irregular work schedule, its easier to go to the shops (and a nice walk on my day off) then it is to think a few days in advance about a day and time I'm free to sit and wait for a delivery.

nomushrooms · 26/07/2019 21:15

We shop at Lidl but also is a way of entertaining the 8 month old; she’s driving us nuts wanting to walk but not being able to, yet will merrily sit in a shopping trolley for ages smiling at all the old dears on a Saturday morning 🤷🏻‍♀️

babysharkah · 26/07/2019 21:16

I can't understand why people drag their whole families around the shops on a Saturday to do the 'big shop'. It looks torturous.

I've been online shopping for food since my kids were born and wouldn't change it.

We don't have plastic bags. I decant at the door into my bags for life. My dog has an odd issue with delivery drivers otherwise I would get them to take it straight into the kitchen.

It saves me money
No issues with substitutions etc
Usually have everything I want

mummydummyabc · 26/07/2019 21:17

Oh online shopping is a godsend. I think it would tip me over the edge dragging the little one around a supermarket. Toy aisles are evil!!!

Sequena · 26/07/2019 21:17

None deliver to my area Sad. In my old house though I always had to get at least one refund pretty much every shops as various products tended to be not the best, especially fruit, which used to annoy me and make me go back to in store shopping for a couple of weeks where I could pick and choose to make sure I got the best.

BizzzzyBee · 26/07/2019 21:19

They had also substituted some vegetarian products for ones containing meat
You can add a comment saying “Substitutions must be vegetarian please”. Although I find if you’ve put a comment that makes their life difficult then they often just decide not to send a substitute at all because they can’t be arsed to pick an appropriate one. They certainly won’t read the labels to choose a substitute that’s free from a certain allergen.

Jsmith99 · 26/07/2019 21:20

I don’t do online food shopping because I enjoy food shopping.

I buy almost all household stuff and basic groceries at Lidl, who don’t deliver.

The rest, eg bread, meat, some fresh fruit & veg, cheeses I try to buy mostly from independent retailers, markets, farm shops, farmer’s markets etc. Of course, I don’t always have time to do this, so I also shop at Waitrose or M&S.

PivotPivotPivottt · 26/07/2019 21:20

I shop in Aldi. I'm a single parent so sometimes I have to go alone with them both which isn't fun. I don't drive and need to get a taxi home as I wouldn't be able to manage buggy and bags on a bus. I can't afford to shop anywhere else so online shopping isn't possible, I would love if Aldi or Lidl started home delivery. Luckily for me my parents take me 90% of the time so that makes things a lot easier for me.

Boyskeepswinging · 26/07/2019 21:22

I like to choose myself, I like to see what's on offer and what's new and it's super fast with self scanning. No queues, pack as you go, job done.

lboogy · 26/07/2019 21:22

I like going around the isle and seeing what's new. I'm unlikely to buy unfamiliar things suggested online. Plus sometimes they don't have what I want and then give me alternatives I hate.

I only have an infant so it's not a chore going to the shop

TattiePants · 26/07/2019 21:23

The only time I use online shopping is if we are on holiday in the uk and it’s handy to have a delivery on the first day. The rest of the time it just doesn’t work for me.

I’m not loyal to any particular supermarket so will go to a couple of different ones during the week (including Lidl that doesn’t deliver).

I don’t like planning for the week ahead as things change and we end up wasting food. A couple of days at a time is best.

I’m self employed so can go at quiet times, usually straight after school drop off.

I prefer to to pick my own fruit & stuff with a short shelf live.

Most weeks I need to buy something that I want to look at in person - birthday card, presents, paddling pool, school dress etc.

I also bulk buy tins, packets, cleaning products, dry food a few times a year so I’m not buying them when I shop so a food shop takes 20 mins.

Sparklingbrook · 26/07/2019 21:24

Don't want to wait in for delivery.
I like to choose my own fruit and veg and I am v picky about use by dates.
I don't buy the same stuff week in week out.

I only shop where you can Scan as you Shop though, I can't be doing with loadsing and unloading the trolley or the conveyor stuff. Doesn't take long at all.

Honeyroar · 26/07/2019 21:25

I've always found the fruit and veg they send is rubbish compared to what I pick myself, plus I do half of it at Aldi. I only go once a month anyway, I go at non busy times (I don't work 9-5).
