If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

Because aldi doesn’t deliver and that is he cheapest place for our weekly shop

museumum · 26/07/2019 21:59

Dh and ds do Aldi Saturday mornings together alternating with Tesco where they have bacon rolls and read the papers / lego magazines.

Ironfloor269 · 26/07/2019 22:01

Because Aldi doesn't do online ordering.

Stopped online shopping due to the amount of products that were replaced. I asked for a certain size of beef, I got sent a great hulk of beef more than twice the size I needed, family pack of tomatoes were 100+ cherry tomatoes (which didn’t match the description) and my potatoes were going out next day.

Aldi/Lidl all the way. Shopping is done in 15 minutes max. Shopping thrown back into my trolley, pack into bags in my boot. Happy days!

WheelieMe · 26/07/2019 22:02

I use a wheelchair and don’t drive so I do an online shop every few months to stock up on bulky stuff - loo roll, washing powder etc.

Otherwise I don’t shop online because

  1. I live alone and find the £40 minimum spend is too high
  2. I walk past the supermarket two or three times a week on my way home so it’s easy to pop in for ten mins to get a few days stuff
  3. The shelf life/quality of what gets delivered seems to be getting worse.
Noonemournsthewicked · 26/07/2019 22:06

Mostly because we use lidl and have a car now.
However the minimum basket price going up to £40 was a barrier.
As was the quality of the veg. If you wouldn't pick the wilting veg for yourself why would you pick it for a customer?

Magmatic80 · 26/07/2019 22:06

Because I really enjoy it. DP and I plan meals together and then go and buy it all together. I enjoy seeing what’s around, what’s new and thinking of new ideas. Holidays abroad usually involve a supermarket to have a look around Grin

If we had children I would switch to online, but Friday evening Tesco trips are a highlight of my week. Obviously I don’t go on Saturdays, I’m not insane.

Whosorrynow · 26/07/2019 22:07

For me shopping is exercise, I walk to the supermarket with my rucksack I fill up and walk home with it 😁

RezCowgirl · 26/07/2019 22:10

I spend too much on the online shop. Some items are overinflated and you're restricted to buying only from the 1 place. We prefer to buy from all over the place. I'm lucky enough to live in walking distance of a large 2 indian and a Chinese supermarket, a polish dehli and a Lidl. So between all of them I can find low prices, buy in bigger bulk and pick what's available at the time. I suppose I have the freedom of time to do this.

PhilOmenon · 26/07/2019 22:10

I like to choose my own fruit, vegetables, meat etc. Also I love getting a bargain in the reduced section and trying new products that I might not have discovered on the site.

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/07/2019 22:14

I dabbled with Ocado for a few years but finally gave up about a year ago, can't see me going back. I live within 5 mins drive of a big Sainsburys, also have Waitrose, Lidl and Iceland within 10 mins.

I like going to the supermarket and my DS (15) comes with me for the big shop most weeks and has for years, he has learned to compare pack sizes for cost per unit weight, look at shelflives, compare products, try new things, pick the freshest produce, ask for things at the deli counter. It's sociable, we nearly always bump into people we know. I can pick and choose exactly what I want, use my own produce bags, look at shelflives, look at new products.

Ocado was good for buying the same things week in week out but hard to find new things to try, despite their pages of descriptions. Also hard to find slots when we could stay in for delivery (we all go out for at least part of most evenings as well as work/school). I can't see me going back to online anytime soon.

Crushedvelvetcouch · 26/07/2019 22:15

Because I shop almost exclusively at the discounters and they don't do deliveries.
I like to shop for food/see whats new.

Fluffiest · 26/07/2019 22:16

Because I meet my friend for breakfast at Morrisons once a week and then we both do our shop together afterwards, with two toddlers in tow!

It's actually one of my favourite times of the week!

Nothingcomesforfree · 26/07/2019 22:17

RezCowgirl exactly why I buy online! I spend a fortune thinking “ that would be nice for dinner and buying 10 ingredients for my “inspirational” meal.
Online I have £40 to spend. I order three days in advance use the 3 days to add stuff, take stuff off etc.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/07/2019 22:17

We do a mix - two online shops a month for heavy stuff, and freezer stuff, then top up with bits as we go, veg, bread etc. We use Sainsbury’s, they deliver without bags and bring it into the kitchen.

Oblomov19 · 26/07/2019 22:21

Interesting. I shop in Sainsbury's and Aldi in my home town. Once a month I do a Sainsbury's online.

Lovetunnocks · 26/07/2019 22:24

I did online shopping for years but now I'm trying to cut back on plastic packaging so have switched back to 'normal' shopping so I can buy meat/fish fresh and unpackaged from the counters rather than In packaging from the shelves.

Puffinhead · 26/07/2019 22:26

I’m able to go during the week after school drop-off so get to rummage through all the early reduced bargains plus it’s relatively quiet. I’m also a stickler for long use by dates, so I’ll be routing around trying to find the best. And I actually quite like it!

PlansNotDreams · 26/07/2019 22:28

We found we had a lot of waste so only buy what we need daily.

DS eats dinner at nursery 5 nights per week and DH and I are often cooking later than planned/one of us not always home for dinner. So planning rigid meals and buying a week’s worth of ingredients doesn’t work for us.

PullingMySocksUp · 26/07/2019 22:31

This is so interesting. I just love the minutiae of domestic life.
I’ll be asking about your laundry processes next. I’m not kidding. Grin

Leftielefterson · 26/07/2019 22:34

I live for the online food shop. With that said I do often go to my local supermarket to pick up bits and pieces and am forever in the deli and grocers.

I can’t imagine doing a full blown food shop with children in tow - f* that!

Heismyopendoor · 26/07/2019 22:36

I’m a Lidl lover, even if they did online shopping, I still wouldn’t use it.

I’ve tried Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s before. I always got rubbish substitutes, things were missing but I’d still been charged, drivers late, prices too expensive, etc. It took me so long setting it all out and ticking off on the list they give to check it was all there.

I’m in and out to Lidl for a full weeks shop (for 5 plus a dog) in under 45 minutes, including driving there and back.

MadamePompadour · 26/07/2019 22:37

Because Morrison's don't put their gluten free pizzas on the online shopping for some reason. So if I have to physically go to get them I might as well do the whole shop in person.

SweetPetrichor · 26/07/2019 22:45

A) I actually enjoy wandering around the supermarket doing my shopping.
B) I like to select my own items, get good dates, etc.
C) I have coeliac disease so I don't want substitutions for missing items that I then can't eat. It goes far beyond obviously gluten free items, it's nigh on everything that could have gluten. Getting a substitution could make the item useless to me and it is far easier just to go and do it myself.

stucknoue · 26/07/2019 22:45

Because I prefer little and often
