If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

I used to use ASDA online but stopped a couple years back. I was forever getting stupid subs or told things were out of stock yet I could walk into the store and there were shelves full of the items. Plus a couple times I went up to do click and collect only to be told my order had been cancelled as my card was refused yet I then did the full shop in store, paying with the same card and didn't get declined.

Now shop at Aldi (except for certain items) and spend a third of what I did and get better quality items and more variety too.

isittheholidaysyet · 26/07/2019 22:54

Because I am not organised and no-one informs me that they have finished something . So I will discover at 9pm that we are out of milk, bread and cereal. We need those items for 7am, I can't wait 2 days for delivery. So I go and get them and get a few meals and other bits as well.

Also I need to kick someone else off the family computer to do the shop, and it often plays up, so by the time I've done it online I could have been to the shop and back.

I pass both Tesco and Lidl on school run (So 4 times a day)
And yes I've discovered Lidl is so much cheaper!

AudacityOfHope · 26/07/2019 22:54

I like doing it

I think it's good for kids to be involved in the chores that come along with family life

I'd rather nip to Tesco and pick my own stuff than wait indoors while someone else does it

I tried it once and just putting it away annoyed me more because the packing was so illogical. At least I pack sensibly so that it unpacks easily at the other end.

Because I love food shopping! Hate clothes shopping but will happily mooch round a supermarket for ages

megletthesecond · 26/07/2019 23:00

Because I walk past at least two supermarkets on my way home from work. It doesn't take long to grab a few bits en route.

And I don't have much fridge space and have a fussy dd. It's easier to choose her food as and when it's needed.

Big items like toilet rolls, laundry powder, crisps etc are purchased in bulk from Aldi or lidl every 2 or 3 weeks when I'm out in the car.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/07/2019 23:05

Each to their own, but I find the many comments saying something along the lines of 'I could go to the shop in the time I'd have to stay in waiting' baffling - is there really nothing you could get on with in your house while being in for the delivery?

FragileMoose · 26/07/2019 23:10

Because I'm going through a period of having very little money and it gives me and my dcs something to do on one of the afternoons each week Blush

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/07/2019 23:11

Because we can't here in Jersey. I have to go to the Co-op every week to buy the same things.....I would love online food shopping!

AquaPris · 26/07/2019 23:13

I like supermarket shopping - I like picking the veg and seeing the new products and getting yellow stickers.

Don't see it as a chore. I love cooking so it's a great place to spontaneously decide on meal ideas

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 26/07/2019 23:14

Just activated a months free delivery pass at Asda and did my first online order for a while.

I normally shop at Aldi. Prices and selection suit us. We only use Aldi nappies. Plus whenever we go to Asda we spend so much more ( and I always bump into exes)

However we live in a tourist area. I'll be avoiding most supermarkets for next month. They are rammed unless in evening when stocks are low.

I've done click and collect a few times. That's good. However getting in and out of supermarket is going to be particularly hard these next few weeks.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 26/07/2019 23:15

I still use butchers, greengrocers occasionally and have a milkman too. Most of my Asda order was cupboard and some fridge stuff

Stillstrawberrywater · 26/07/2019 23:15

Simply because I do most of our shop in aldi and they don't deliver. Otherwise I would all over online shopping if just to avoid the aldi super quick bag packing situation

yikesanotherbooboo · 26/07/2019 23:16

I have had spells of on line shopping and love it for store cupboard ingredients , loo rolls , dog biscuits etc but I still found myself going to the supermarket as often to choose fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, top up and get fresh bread. It's true that the add on shops were shorter but I have always rolled back to regular shopping. I like looking at fresh ingredients before buying although can totally understand the time save in doing it all from home.

FunnysInLaJardin · 26/07/2019 23:19

Mind you its is miles easier now we can leave our DC at home while we shop.

TheFlis12345 · 26/07/2019 23:23

I work full time, pretty long hours, but still wouldn’t do my food shopping online.

We meal plan but our diaries are often hectic during the week and things get moved around. If something doesn’t have a long enough date on to allow for that I will choose something else instead. Ordering online doesn’t allow for that and means things get wasted.

I am fussy about meat and want to make sure I have the least fatty ham with the longest date on it etc. rather than just the one from the front.

Also like to pick veg that is the freshest (I am that person rifling through the tray below the one on display to get an extra few days on the best before).

And finally, ridiculous substitutions. No Sainsburys, a bunch of bananas won’t work in mojitos for a party because you are out of limes. And frozen chips are not the same as ice cubes!!!! Angry

SomeAfternoonDelight · 26/07/2019 23:28

Because they always fuck it up somehow! Especially on the pork!! And there’s nothing more disappointing than getting your groceries to find that something wasn’t in/has been changed and the evening meal is buggered!!!!!! Scan and go is perfect!

Nothingcomesforfree · 26/07/2019 23:32

Just as a thought to the global warming thread....

Doesn’t online shopping make sense. Buy what you need rather than what the supermarkets push on you. One vehicle on the road rather than lots of cars. Using the freezer instead of “ fresh” produce with long dates shipped in from all over the world.

I get what people say about “ long dates” but often it’s been flown in from miles away and what happens to the short dated stuff? We have a “free food “ store where food is given away if it’s past sell by. Literally the store is cleared within 20 minutes of opening.....

OccidentalPurist · 26/07/2019 23:39

I've never got into online food shopping, but we have a large Waitrose and Tesco's within walking distance so I shop between the two each week.

I always buy meat and fish from Waitrose (or a butcher/fishmonger) but IME Tesco's has better fruit and vegetables and a larger selection of everything else.

twistyturnycurlywhirly · 26/07/2019 23:44

If I didn't have severe morning sickness, I'd go back to shopping in store. We use so much more plastic packaging when we shop online because there's no option to buy loose fruit and veg. We also buy a lot more because you can't physically see how much is going in the trolley.

Hotterthanahotthing · 26/07/2019 23:54

Because only Tesco deliver and it would take less time to go to the shop and back than it would to input on the computer. You still need top ups of fresh, local products.
My mum does her main shop online(Waitrose) but does a 2week shop for just herself so still needs to go out for fresh veg/bread/milk/fish mongers.

Blueemeraldagain · 26/07/2019 23:55

Small highjack warning: is aldi really that much cheaper than other supermarkets? My nearest one is 30 mins on the bus and sainsbury’s is a 10 minute walk but I’ll suck it up if it really is that much cheaper.

SarahBeeney · 26/07/2019 23:56

I like going around the supermarket!

Plus I work odd days and hours so I don't
ever go at the weekends when it's busy.
9am on school days is the best, quiet and fully stocked shelves.
Plus now I've discovered the click and pack thing at Sainsbo's so I scan and then put it straight in the bags,so quick.
I have done the odd delivery in the past and the only one that was good was Ocado IMO. The others all had way too many substitutions.
If my kids were younger and/or I worked 9-5 I would definitely do internet shopping.

LittleAndOften · 27/07/2019 00:03

I shop in several different shops, including Lidl, although my main shop is sainsburys. I'd rather go in person because I always go when they've reduced yellow sticker items so I can get lots of bargains. I also find it easier to do price comparisons when I can see the shelf and the price per 100g label.

When I have shopped online I found they didn't list the sizes or quantities of items I wanted. Even to the point that the website said there was no own brand dog food in stock - we cancelled the order, went in store and there was loads on the shelf. Substitutions are always done by idiots and I resent paying for delivery.

So all in all - not a fan.

starfishmummy · 27/07/2019 00:04

I pass sainsburys 4 times a day during term time. It's easy to pop in and first thing in the morning using scan and go it doesnt take long.

CalamityJune · 27/07/2019 00:22

Totally agree OP. I do Asda Click and Collect drive through which is free and means I don't have to get my toddler out of the car.

I've always meal planned and shopping online takes only as long as writing my list would.

I do love Aldi when I can get there but I inevitably buy more 'treats' when I go in person, and Aldi doesn't have such a comprehensive stock of ingredients, so I either have to cook more simply, or top up the shop elsewhere.
