If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

I've tried online shopping but its not for me.

I like to shop in more than one supermarket.
I like to check out the 'Oops' stuff.
I like to look at the clothes/household stuff. Have had a LOT of bargains in these sections that I wouldn’t get online.
I like to get the best dates/nicest looking stuff.
I want to change whats on the menu if I cant get all I need, so no need to have stuff that cant be used as I don’t have one necessary ingredient.
I'm disabled and sometimes going to the shops is the only time I get out.

Online always had substitutions, crappy dates, fruit and veg that didn't last. Plus I hate waiting in. Its either daytime and I might actually want to go out for once but cant or its evening and I just want to go to bed, or sit in my knickers but have to wait up and wear actual clothes.

I love online shopping, I am always recommending it to people. If I receive anything that isn't up to standard or just wrong I call them and they refund the cost. Also, I like that someone else carries it all inside and puts it on the kitchen bench for me...they won't put it away for me though...lazy beggars. I'm in Sydney so not sure if it's exactly the same anywhere else.

Chilledout11 · 27/07/2019 00:32

We online shop mid winter when it's frosty and busy with work but usually go to aldi and use local butchers

Save about 30 quid a week

Because I buy

meat from the local butcher
fruit and veg from the market or local greengrocer
cleaning products from the refill station at the local organic shop

for the rest I go to whatever supermarket I'm passing on my travels

ithinkiammelting · 27/07/2019 00:40

There are two supermarkets literally across the road from where I work (Lidl and Waitrose), I drive right by another half way home (Tesco), and there's yet another one a quarter of a mile from my house (Morrisons). DH works near an Aldi, a Sainsburys and an Asda, plus there's a farm shop on his way home. And our local petrol station / Tesco Extra is open 24 hours.

We buy what we need when we need it, and shop around for bargains.

OhTheRoses · 27/07/2019 00:56

I do an on-line shop once a month or so for:

Bog roll
Bleach
Washing up liquid
Fizzy water
Beer
T bags
Coffee
Cereal
Sugar
Oils
Sauces
Dishwasher tablets
Cat food
Baked beans
Tuna
Tonic
Squash
Tinned toms
Rice
Pasta
Shampoo/cond
Bubble bath
Shower gel
Toothpaste
Mouthwash
Milk (freeze some)
Bread (freeze some)
Pizzas
Frozen peas
Oven chips
Fish cakes
Packets of mince
Chicken thighs
And usually a few dinners for the coming week.

So really the heavy stuff that one keeps stocks of but I like to buy the food personally. My favourites are great but there is a whole world of Haagen Daz individual pots and gin and tonic ice pops out there that I wouldn't know about otherwise notwithstanding legs of lamb on special offer, yoghurt choices, yummy looking steaks, etc.

Because I live in a hideous road and always feel really bad for the driver!

99mTc · 27/07/2019 06:32

I book an online shop a couple of times a year, on the day we come back from a holiday. I wouldn't do it every week though. We buy most of our fruit and veg at the market because it's so much better, and I want to choose the few things we buy at the supermarket myself.
Shopping in person also saves a lot of money because I get loads of offers I can't find online.
I also hate hanging around at home waiting for the delivery.

Foreverlexicon · 27/07/2019 06:50

I work full time but don’t shop online.

I shop in Lidl though, I quite enjoy it and I usually work shifts so can go when it’s quiet. Doing 9-5 this summer and can certainly see the appeal in online shopping! However it’s also just me so it seems a waste to pay delivery on a relatively small shop. Largely it comes down to cost though - I save a significant amount shopping in Lidl and just pop to Tesco or Sainsbury’s for the odd extra bit.

Natsku · 27/07/2019 06:56

Because it's not possible where I live. But also I like to see what I'm buying, especially fruit and veg so I can get stuff that's ripe.

Hellywelly10 · 27/07/2019 07:03

I live in an urban area with amazing ethinc food shops, a market and an aldi and lidl.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 27/07/2019 07:05

I buy in person

As I don't like mushy fruit, bruised apples, ripe bananas

Or meat/chicken/fish that is already on the expiry date

Or milk for the week, with a best before date of tomorrow

Or random ingredients not being available, then getting random replacements

Bakery stuff from yesterday

I basically choose the freshest stuff, the delivery pickers choose old stuff. That's why.

plum1304 · 27/07/2019 07:27

I didn’t don’t feel as though I get the same amount for my money, £45 in Morrisons yesterday compared to £76 from Ocado the previous week... just seem bonkers

firstimemamma · 27/07/2019 07:32

£5 delivery charge.

I paid it when ds was a newborn because back then I did whatever I could to make life easier. When he turned 2 months I went back to visiting the supermarket 1-2 times a week. Having said that when my baby becomes a toddler I might go straight back to online for a bit!!! Grin

I always buy fruit and veg from the green grocers though and even if I went back to online shopping I think I'd still make it out to the green grocers once a week. No plastic and the fruit and vegetables are bigger and tastier.

soupmaker · 27/07/2019 07:33

@Blueemeraldagain Yes, shopping at Aldi has saved us a fortune. I spend less than £100 a week to feed a family of 4 including lunches. I have used delivery from Sainsbury's and Asda but Aldi way cheaper.

Sometimes pop into Morrison's for meat and there are some ingredients we need which I have to source from elsewhere.

I love my weekly hour of supermarket shopping on my own!

Sockworkshop · 27/07/2019 07:41

I do a bit of both.
Ocado for heavy and store cupboard/freezer stuff once a month .
I sometimes do the fish 3 for £10 and freeze it.
Local bakers, green grocer ,farm shop for everything else.
I only buy meat the day I use it, no need to look at long expiry dates Envy
Also very handy if the weather is bad or feeling unwell .
DC at Uni once was really unwell so pinged an online shop over .
Do a Christmas shop also
£2.99 a month delivery pass

divafever99 · 27/07/2019 07:45

I did for a few months when dc were babies, but got a bit fed up of rubbish use by dates and stupid substitutions. I prefer to shop in Aldi anyway.

Bluesheep8 · 27/07/2019 07:45

I don't. I shop in Aldi. Even if I didn't I like to see what I'm buying/select things with later use by dates etc and have a browse. I don't find food shopping a chore tbh. Used to have it delivered many years ago from both Tesco and Sainsbury's but there were too many random and ridiculous substitutions for my liking. Once got sausage rolls instead of sausages and salami instead of chorizo and a ready made fish pie instead of fish pie mix. All in the same delivery. Not for me, I'd rather spend an hour of my own time getting it right.

LittleAndOften · 27/07/2019 07:48

Just remembered the last time I tried it when DH was in hospital - they sent 2 packs of out of date rolls Confused

purplelass · 27/07/2019 07:59

I'm a control freak

I dont like spending more than I need to

I get some stuff at Asda & some at Aldi

I like to get long dated stuff

It's a chance to get out of the house

It adds to my daily step count

I normally see someone I know

SaveKevin · 27/07/2019 08:03

I use cash
I go to Lidl / Aldi and another small Sainsbury’s shop.
The substitutions do my brain in.

Rkay2 · 27/07/2019 08:08

I online food shop but I also take DS 17 months to the supermarket who likes to sit in the trolley and have a look whilst eating snacks!

Plus also gives me the option to look at non food stuff as they often have stuff like books and toys and clothes on sale for DS who gets through a lot!

inappropriateraspberry · 27/07/2019 08:15

I've tried online shopping but I get better value going into Lidl, a lot more for the same money. Plus, you miss the reduced bits and can't pick your own fruit and veg. I buy different things each week so by the time I've found it all online it takes as long as just going to the shop.

snitzelvoncrumb · 27/07/2019 08:18

Because there is always something they don't bring, so I have to go in anyway

TheDogsMother · 27/07/2019 08:21

I did used to but found that as I was buying different things every week it didn't save that much. On the plus side (Waitrose.com) I could get free delivery slots, great substitutions and no short dates. Down side they are a bit pricey, doesn't save that much time and no opportunity to pick up a yellow sticker bargain. I use a local Tesco or Sainsbury's along with local butcher plus monthly trips to Aldi for washing liquids, loo rolls etc etc
