If you don’t do online food shopping

do you mind me asking why not?

I cannot imagine doing it all in person any more, takes me ten mins to wizz through my favourites.
A friend of mine was looking slightly surprised when I said we do it online, and I think there was a weird superiority to her reply.

Gawd this reads like market research. It’s really not.

I guess I can think of cost (we do any time delivery for £20 a quarter but if you thought it was £7 a delivery I can see why that would put you off).

Because I absolutely adore the "Oops" aisles.

TheChineseChicken · 26/07/2019 21:27

I counterintuitively find it more of a faff than going myself. Not entirely sure why

NorthEndGal · 26/07/2019 21:28

I like shopping in person to see the quality. Also, I aim for no palm oils and no plastic, so I need to be able to examine packaging.

I shop for my produce for a local farm store that doesn't offer on line shopping, and I get a lot of local products in the market.

I go shopping with DH, we get time to talk to one another ,plan out meals for the week, and we often grab a coffee while we are out.

I don't because I walk past a supermarket every day on the way home so just nip in and get what I need.

I also never know when I'm going to be in or out (no kids) so if I bought a weeks worth of food it would go to waste.

I also have no freezer and a tiny kitchen so not much storage space.

Rainbowknickers · 26/07/2019 21:29

Cos I hate waiting around for delivery
I hate the thought of someone else choosing my food
I enjoy going to the shops
I’ve heard too many horror stories
I firmly believe if you don’t use it you lose it-i don’t want my town to become anymore of a ghost town
I’ve never online shopped in my life

confusedjuly2019 · 26/07/2019 21:30

I like to select my own food....and also like to shop in Lidl (& Aldi if there was one anywhere near me).

Nicpem1982 · 26/07/2019 21:31

We use a fish monger, green grocer, Baker and butcher then shop in aldi once a week and lidl on occasion online wouldn't work for us

TemporaryPermanent · 26/07/2019 21:31

Online shopping was a Godsend when I was working full time and dh was at home and too ill to work or to go to the shops. He felt he could contribute by doing the shopping, and he was really good at sticking to a budget.

But we had the same things all the time, with little seasonal variation, because he needed it not to take very much time, and not to be too stressful. I grew to dread seeing the same stuff arriving and it was quite delicate suggesting changes as sometimes he was just too fragile to cope with much input. We did get some ridiculously short shelf lives too, though not too often.

It is such a liberation to be able to choose the way I shop, to go to the market, the baker, the pick your own, or the supermarket as I choose; to vary what I buy and think seasonally, and to reject plastic as much as I can.

Also I shop at Waitrose so it's like a leisure experience Grin

Echobelly · 26/07/2019 21:32

I'd like to, TBH, but DH moans and whinges about any replacement items and doesn't like it. Also, TBH, we save loads of money now going to Aldi compared to a weekly shop at the main supermarkets - Tesco was getting to about £110 a week, but Aldi seldom costs us more than £65, plus maybe another £20 on a couple of things we have to get from the Tesco round the corner because Aldi doesn't stock them.

mummyrocks1 · 26/07/2019 21:35

I shop in Aldi most of the time so can't do delivery. I really notice the difference in price when I shop elsewhere and do a online shop. I only do it when I can't be bothered to go to the shops or need things you can't get in Aldi. I save loads of money not doing an online shop so try to visit the supermarket most of the time. Plus, I always do something wrong in an online shop, too many of one item, 6 packs of apples instead of 6 apples or something's smaller then I wanted. I also like to see the fruit and meat I am buying.

DontCallMeShitley · 26/07/2019 21:35

I like to check freshness, especially fruit & veg, I don't want squashy tomatoes, limp cucumbers, mouldy blueberries and bug ridden lettuce etc.

I like to see meat and choose it and get yellow sticker stuff.

I usually shop in more than one supermarket in order to get everything I want.

I like to browse and see what else is available while I am there, and maybe get a free coffee.

dementedma · 26/07/2019 21:36

Have never done an online food shop in my life, for all of the reasons listed by other pp. I like to choose my own stuff, reduce plastic waste and shop when it suits me. Never had a problem taking the dcs with us when they were younger.

MoltenMountain · 26/07/2019 21:36

They don't deliver wine to my postcode Angry
The other because they have stupid delivery times - morning, afternoon or evening and I'm invariably out in overlap hours. Easier to spend 30mins twice a week going to the shop.

Ronsters · 26/07/2019 21:37

I like to choose my own fruit, veg etc. I had a few poor experiences with online shopping, Sainsbury's sending stupid substitutes ( strawberry jam instead of strawberries), and Ocado sending items that were on their sell by date.
I also dont exclusively use one shop, I buy some stuff from Morrison's as its cheaper (toilet roll, cat food etc), and the farm shop for meat, so I'd still need to go out and shop anyway.

PullingMySocksUp · 26/07/2019 21:37

I get really stressed at some of these answers. Grin I think I’m a bit panicked at the idea of not having it.

We’re lucky in that we can get slots for the next day usually, so don’t need to be that organised. We had to change from Tesco to Sainsbury’s when we moved to keep that situation though as our new area fell into a different Tesco and there were no slots for a few days. Argh.

Also slots are 1 hour these days which is no time at all to wait in for. I often go for 8.30-9.30 at the weekend as we will be up but still in.

Don’t get plastic bags, driver brings cartons to kitchen.

I’m a palm oil/hydrogenated fat avoider too. I look at the ingredients online.

I guess it’s a bit of a personality and lifestyle thing in that some people just don’t get on with it. Like it just doesn’t feel right.

We don't have kids. My partner is away some weeks for a few days. We do things on an evening and sometimes eat out or pick up something easy. So our weeks vary a lot. So then planning groceries for the week isn't very simple. So a few smaller top up shops work for us.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 26/07/2019 21:38

Would be interested to hear how many of the people who would never do an online shop work full-time. The only time in recent years where I didn't shop online was on mat leave, as it was a good excuse to get out the house with baby, so I do understand that.

ememem84 · 26/07/2019 21:39

I’d love to do it. But it’s not available where we are.

Boobahs · 26/07/2019 21:39

I never did it until recently. I always shop at Aldi and do actually enjoy doing it (putting it all away back at home is another story though). I have to take my 3 year old with me though, as I work while he's at nursery. I've recently had DS2 (10 weeks old now) so tried a Morrison's online shop before he arrived as I knew I wouldn't get out after an elective C-section. I've had it delivered 3-4 times now and had nothing but good experiences (and it seems so efficient) but we are spending more than we used to.

Once DS1 starts nursery every day in Sept, I'll probably go back to doing it myself with the baby as I will need to watch the pennies!

PuppyMonkey · 26/07/2019 21:40

Said this on another thread tonight, I shop in Aldi and it takes me half an hour and I spend about £100 less than you online shoppers.Wink

I also found online shopping just as boring and annoying as doing it myself. And all that waiting around for deliveries. No thanks.

Nicpem1982 · 26/07/2019 21:40

@LisaSimpsonsbff I work full time as does dh

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 26/07/2019 21:41

I don't do it because I worry they will put me all the bruised or damaged fruit and veg in, or chicken breasts with loads of the red bits, or things close to their date when I will normally check milk or what have you for the longest dates.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 26/07/2019 21:42

Because on a rainy day especially it gives me something yummy to do with my toddler

BuildBuildings · 26/07/2019 21:42

Also I like to use a few different shops so would need a delivery for each. At busy times of year I like to make my own choices about substitutions.

When I lived in London without a car sainsburys delivery was a life saver though. So it is useful. Just people live different lives.

Pleasebequietnow · 26/07/2019 21:42

They never deliver everything I’ve ordered and I always end up having to go the shop anyway to get the crucial ingredients.
