Has anyone noticed a difference switching to bar soap?

A few weeks ago I stopped using shower gel and face wash and use only soap now (dove beauty if interested).
I have noticed that even in the heat we have had I am hardly sweating. And I have also noticed that my sparse eyebrows are definitely thickening up for the first time in years! Is this likely to do with the soap? I did notice it says sulphate free on the box.

I’ve been using soap on my face for the better part of my entire life and my eyebrows are still sparse so I wouldn’t think so.

Caster oil is supposed to be good for regrowth if it has that?

YoungEurope · 08/07/2019 17:23

I swapped from shower gel to soap last year. My skin is much less dry / tight / itchy now.
Use Nesti Dante soap which is gorgeous and lasts ages.

haverhill · 08/07/2019 17:26

I think the Dove bar isn’t technically soap, OP.
I hate shower gel, it feels sticky. Soap all the way for me. My feet have very little hard skin which is apparently a soap thing.

I don't use bar soap on my face but on my body. It's way better at stopping your pits from stinking than shower gel. I feel like shower gel is a more of a luxury factor and the effects don't really linger.

TheFlis12345 · 08/07/2019 18:08

DH is definitely less stinky at the end of a hot day or gym visit since he switched to bar soap.

dementedpixie · 08/07/2019 18:13

It lasts much longer than shower gel too

Iggly · 08/07/2019 18:15

Yes much less stinky in the pits!

Although my bath plug needs clearing much more often - probably from the dcs shoving the last bits of soap down the plug 😒

TheJoxter · 08/07/2019 18:17

Dove isn’t technically soap I believe, can’t remember the exact details! I’ve used proper bar soap all my life so can’t compare! If I use liquid soap too much (except dr bronners which I love) my skin dries out so badly it bleeds

LuckyLou7 · 08/07/2019 18:21

Dunno about being less stinky or my eyebrows being thicker. Deffo lasts longer than shower gel and no recycling issues either.

endofthelinefinally · 08/07/2019 18:22

I love bar soap. I switched in order to use less plastic. It is cheaper, doesn't leave residue on the skin, and I feel much cleaner.

Spudina · 08/07/2019 18:23

I love soap. I'm finding that I don't really need deodorant since I switched, so have changed to an "eco" one to try and get rid if some more chemicals. The only downside is that the skin on my legs is definitely drier. But a good body oil sorts that out. The kids love it too. We go to our local health food shop and stock up monthly. There are loads to chose from.

Dfg15 · 08/07/2019 18:24

I tried bar soap but it made my skin really tight and itchy x

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 08/07/2019 18:30

I switched to bar soap a couple of years ago. I’m definitely less stinky in the pits and my teen son is too!! (Hurray for that!! Grin) it has the added benefit of people who would previously have bought me shower gel gift sets for Xmas or birthdays with a horribly plastic body puff in it are now buying me lovely bars of soap. Handmade, organic, ones, that come with handmade face wipes, supporting local crafters. My sister even brought me back lovely soap on a rope from Corsica instead of the usual duty free perfume.

Screamanger · 08/07/2019 18:34

Sarandipity soap Co make awsome soap and shampoo, I don’t use anything else.

PCohle · 08/07/2019 18:38

Yeah the dove bar isn't actually soap, they say so pretty prominently on their website.

Has anyone noticed a difference switching to bar soap?
Eaudear · 08/07/2019 18:41

I can't say that soap is that absolute miracle that Mumsnet made it out to be, but I do like the less packaging and the fact that it lasts a long time (I use Nesti Dante too and they are huge).

However, I live in a very hard water area and have noticed that the soap scum is horrendous since I switched.

VenusClapTrap · 08/07/2019 18:45

I switched from hand wash to soap bars and find it lasts much longer when used by myself and dh, but the kids do my nut in sticking their fingers through it, so I’ve reverted to hand wash in their bathroom.

FourEyesGood · 08/07/2019 18:45

Bar soap definitely makes pits less stinky!

Sniv · 08/07/2019 18:48

I switched about a year ago, but noticed no difference at all to my skin.

I still won't be going back to showergel, though, for environmental reasons. Which is just as well because I asked for nice soap for Christmas and got 10(!) bars of it, and even though I wash every day I'm still on the first one...

EvaHarknessRose · 08/07/2019 18:51

My feet don’t smell now

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/07/2019 18:52

I have started using bar soap and my skin is much less dry and flaky. I'm allergic to Dove, so I usually use Lux. I'm using Chanel at the moment though (gift from my grandmother)

TheKitchenWitch · 08/07/2019 18:53

We swapped over a few years ago after I read about various benefits on here. DH's awful skin rashes have completely stopped, my skin is less dry but also not as "slick" feeling as it used to be after shower gel.
I love trying new soaps, I have a friend makes them, so as well as regular bought ones (Nivea sea minerals one is a current favourite) I also get fancy ones from her (which has the added bonus of all natural ingredients).
We get through bars quite quickly I find, as there's 3 of us using it daily.

2littleninjas · 08/07/2019 18:55

I use bar soap on my face in the evenings and it’s cleared my skin up. I have to use a special soap on my body due to sensitive skin but DH and the DC use bar soap and they have lovely soft skin. DH’s pits still stink though, I don’t think anything could ever make that stop.

BinkySodPlop · 08/07/2019 18:58

I've been using the Botanicals range from The Yorkshire Soap Co. for a few years now. Definitely nicer than gel, last longer and don't dry my skin out. Not for use on the face, but they do different ranges which are suitable.

AlphaNumericalSequence · 08/07/2019 19:03

It makes me feel like an old lady when i read about all you young folks switching from shower gel to bar soap. To me, it only seems a few years ago that shower gel became a thing. There WAS only bar soap until, what, the eighties/nineties?.

Shower gel was meant to be an exciting new development but to me it was always a bit crap. It doesn't get you as clean, it is inconvenient to use. I hadn't thought of the packaging element, but now that you mention it, that too is part of the crapness of shower gel.
