Has anyone noticed a difference switching to bar soap?

A few weeks ago I stopped using shower gel and face wash and use only soap now (dove beauty if interested).
I have noticed that even in the heat we have had I am hardly sweating. And I have also noticed that my sparse eyebrows are definitely thickening up for the first time in years! Is this likely to do with the soap? I did notice it says sulphate free on the box.

I use Savon de Marseille,it lasts ages.

soapona · 08/07/2019 23:13

Surely you're just using rubbish shower gel if it's not cleaning properly? I use Australia bodycare skin wash. I've tried to get into soap and bought loccaitaine or various other soaps bars I just don't like them. Does Clinique still do a soap? I remember as a teenager having a soap bar in a nice case.

missbattenburg · 08/07/2019 23:25

@joxergoestostuttgart. Yes absolutely. You need to leave it somewhere the water can evaporate out over several weeks. Somewhere room temp, dry and relatively clean will do.

I use an airing cupboard now but in the past have used a spare wardrobe and book shelves.

Love soap. I alternate between Nesti Dante, French soaps and Faith in Nature. The only downside is that they last so long I'm struggling to get through my stash!

Purpletigers · 09/07/2019 00:33

Do you have a link to a good website or recipe for making soap Miss Battenburg?

thecatneuterer · 09/07/2019 01:03

I've been using bar soap for at least three years now. I haven't really noticed any difference. The upside for me is that I tend to be given really nice soaps as gifts, rather than terrible tourist tat or other stuff I really wouldn't want. I'm always happy to receive nice soap (although I am building up quite a stash).

Loopytiles · 09/07/2019 01:06

My issue with soap is soap dishes/keeping soap dry. Dislike the scummy water that collects.

Rachelover40 · 09/07/2019 02:27

Thanks, I bought some Dove soap awhile ago but haven't yet opened it. I'm so used to shower gel. Your post has given me incentive to use the soap though I would be reluctant to wash my face with it. Could try it though.

motherheroic · 09/07/2019 05:39

I don't use a puff due to the waste, I use a soap bag.

LaLaLamp · 09/07/2019 06:17

Years ago someone bought me Crabtree & Evelyn seashell shaped soap bars - it was so nice and very kind to my hands which tend to dry out. I've recently switched to using bars again but using up gifted L'Occitane at the moment but it's nowhere near as nice as the C & E one. I only have it at the hand basin though.

MaudesMum · 09/07/2019 06:49

I've bought a magnetic soap holder, with a suction cup to attach to tiles - the magnet for the soap has little claws so can be pushed into the soap. Works brilliantly in the shower!

Branleuse · 09/07/2019 08:13

my skin is less itchy with soap because SLS in shower gels doesnt agree with me, although i can tolerate it in shampoo now, which i didnt used to, but shower gel doesnt seem to get me feeling clean.

I like the fact its eco friendly and lasts forever. I like to get really nice bars from TKMaxx of luxury soap. Ive got a limeflower tilleul one on the go at the moment, and ive been using the same bar for months. Smells incredible.

My favourite cheap one is palmolive green one. Really suds up

LadyKylieShagworthy · 09/07/2019 08:29

I would like to install one of these in our utility room. They are £25 though on Amazon.

Has anyone noticed a difference switching to bar soap?
GwenCooper81 · 09/07/2019 08:37

I love 'posh soap' an hour spent in TK MAXX sniffing all the of them is an hour well spent!.
I definitely smell less at the end of the day. No more sweaty feet smell either. Brilliant for using less plastic.
I also use a black charcoal and tea tree soap (method?) on my face. My skin is no longer dry/ peeling with an oily Tzone. It's sold in Boots for about 6 quid. The kids use it and so far it's stopped anymore teenage breakouts.

LoafofSellotape · 09/07/2019 08:56

My phompolyx cleared up on my hands when I switched to soap.

We use Nesti Dante or Nivea.

CadburySpira · 09/07/2019 08:58

@MaudesMum could you share a link to your suction cup soap holder? Sounds perfect!

tiddlyipom · 09/07/2019 09:00

I switched to bar soap about a year ago, it is so much cheaper, just bought 10 bars of Palmolive for AUD $4.50! I find it lasts for ages and I feel cleaner after using it, gel is a bit slimy and our family seemed to go through it really quickly!

Fibbke · 09/07/2019 09:00

I use pears soap on my face and body. I have nice skin and never smell Smile

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 09/07/2019 09:10

Thank you!

SciFiScream · 09/07/2019 09:17

I was once treating a stain on some clothes in the bathroom and my stain treatment (vanish) was down stairs so I was lazy and used the hand soap.

It did a far better job on the stain than the vanish ever did! In fact the stain was gone before I popped the thing in the wash! I've stopped using all stain treatments and now use whatever bar of soap is nearest.

Other benefits: I'm not as stinky (I actually think I could go without deodorant altogether)
DH's fingers don't split anymore.

The bathroom smells nicer because of the soap.

I store my 'to be used' soap in my drawers so that it scents the clothes

4 of us using soap so we go through it quite quickly.

whatalifethisis · 09/07/2019 09:28

I buy melt and pour base soap and add my own colours and essential oil. Pour into silicone flower moulds, costs less than £1.00 a bar , smells heavenly and lasts for ages.

www.brambleberry.com/ is an American site but has some really great, easy recipes and tutorials to follow.

Gracefruit.com and soapkitchen.com in the UK sells supplies and I think also have some recipe suggestions and guides. Supplies can also be bought from:
eBay - almost everything
Supermarket - for simple oils like coconut and olive

BobbinThreadbare123 · 09/07/2019 11:44

Yes to storing bars of soap in your wardrobes and drawers! My socks and tights smell lovely because of that.
Have a look at Savon and Bain; Cumbrian soap makers. I'm inclined to give the shampoo bars a go. Shame there's not scratch and sniff Internet for soap testing!

justasking111 · 09/07/2019 13:34

I recall reading storing soap in the airing cupboard made it harder so it lasted longer.
