How many days off sick have you had this year?

Biancadelrioisback · 11/06/2019 16:10

Ive had 3 and I've been told that's high. I had 2 days (back to back) back in Feb due to suspected mild pnumonia. I worked from home for a week before but 2 days I could barely move let alone work.
I've had one more day recently due to a cold. I was coughing up a lot of gung and it triggered my gag reflex and I was sick so they send me home.

I work for a very small company so I think only one other person had had a sick day but so far I've had the most. It's definitely more noticeable in a small team too so I don't want to be seen as a piss taker.

So, is that a lot in the space of 6 months? How many have you had?

Very few in my whole working life. Having said that I have been part time for a long time and can work from home so there are probably times when I wouldn't have gone in to the office but can work from home.

Crazyladee · 11/06/2019 22:21

But surely comparing all these answers is a waste of time as it all depends whether posters are working full or part time hours?

So if you only work 2 days a week, having 2 days sickness on record is considered higher than someone working 5 days a week?

tenlittlecygnets · 11/06/2019 22:24

None. I haven’t had a day off in ten years. Probably more.

But then I run my own business... and I work from home so probably come into contact with fewer people than most.

Maryann1975 · 11/06/2019 22:27

I’m self employed and work 5 days a week. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. In the past 8 years, I’ve had two days off with a tummy bug. In my experience, if you don’t get paid for sick days, you will have very few days off. If your company offers sick pay, there is less incentive to drag yourself there when you are feeling a bit ill in the morning.

I do think sick pay is a generally good thing and I understand it is my choice to be self employed and therefore not get sick pay, but when I see people with a bit of a cold taking the day off, it does make my eyes roll a bit.

EmmaC78 · 11/06/2019 22:31

I have been in my current job 5 years and have had one day off. That's normal for me but i am generally pretty healthy and manage to avoid colds and flu's.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/06/2019 22:35

I've had 3 this year. I could have actually gone into work but we have to have all medication we take checked and I wasn't allowed to take it and work. So I get marked sick.

Hairyfairy01 · 11/06/2019 22:36

None in the past 2 years. Are you often working from home due to not feeling well enough to go to work but not sick enough to take time off either?

Southwest12 · 11/06/2019 22:49

I’ve had five and a half weeks off sick, thanks to two episodes of acute renal failure and emergency surgery. Though on both admissions with renal failure I was at work and had to give up and go to A&E as I felt so ill.

WyfOfBathe · 11/06/2019 22:56

I've had the same as you. Two days back-to-back (D&V) and then one separately (migraine).

I'm a teacher so taking time off can be frowned upon because it requires cover, but nobody commented negatively on my 3 days off.

LoisSanger · 11/06/2019 23:08

I’ve been off for 5 weeks due to mental health issues. Other than that no days off sick in about 12 years.

BlackPrism · 11/06/2019 23:17

I don't really know... 5,6? I get tonsillitis a lot

BlackPrism · 11/06/2019 23:21

Be warned the 'I got hit by a truck and still went in' brigade will enjoy this thread.

BlackPrism · 11/06/2019 23:23

If I go in sick then everyone just tells me to stop being a martyr and go home.. someone will cover or I'll make up the work. No one else wants to get ill or get their kids I'll.. don't understand this culture of being reprimanded for having a shite immune system or not being a martyr

Essexgirlupnorth · 12/06/2019 06:03

Had nearly 3 weeks in Jan because I has a miscarriage including two days in hospital and rest signed off by doctors and one day because of a sickness bug my dd brought home from school.
Previously year has no days off sick though anymore will have to go to occupational health.

KnickyKnackyNooNoo · 12/06/2019 06:15

None this year, but last year I had 6 weeks off (2 weeks holiday and 4 weeks sick) after having surgery. I'm on the waiting list for a hysterectomy so I'll likely need 12 weeks off at some point. Other than that I have managed to be sick on my days off. Like this week, I had the start of a cold on Sunday (my last day in), managed to have a cold Monday and yesterday on my days off, and back to work today with the leftovers of the cold. Albeit doses up on painkillers to minimise the effects of it.

But if you need time off, you need it off. I don't think 2 instances is a lot.

ArtificialArctophile · 12/06/2019 06:31

Education here. 8 weeks in session 18-19 with an MS relapse which affected my walking and balance, with terrible fatigue.
This session three weeks with shingles, which in turn affected my MS too.
School management very supportive and sympathetic to both periods of absence. I know I'm really lucky in that respect and would never abuse it.

awalkintheparka · 12/06/2019 06:37

1 in 18 months. But I should have taken more. I don't think yours is particularly high are you NHS based?

FenellaMaxwell · 12/06/2019 06:45

4 consecutive days with a chest infection. Last year about 15. DS’s first year of nursery. You catch EVERYTHING!

bellinisurge · 12/06/2019 07:03

@ArtificialArctophile . Same here.

ememem84 · 12/06/2019 07:14
  1. Including today.

But I am 8m pregnant (and some is pregnancy related) and I have a germ ridden toddler.

Today toddler hasn’t slept much so am absolutely exhausted. So am taking a day. It’ll go down as sickness.

If I wasn’t pregnant I’d probably just power through. But nope. Not today.

DebbieFiderer · 12/06/2019 07:59

I had 6 weeks off with a broken bone last year, other than that I haven't had any days off sick since starting my current (NHS) employment almost 4 years ago. I haven't been a martyr either, I just haven't been ill with anything other than a mild cold. My primary aged children haven't had time off sick for about the same time period as well, I guess we just have strong immune systems. DH on the other hand gets hit a lot harder by colds etc and has a few days off sick each year.

cocomelon23 · 12/06/2019 08:00

None!

Longdistance · 12/06/2019 08:06

One day off. I had Diarrhoea and felt sick so phoned in sick. I work in a school. It was a Friday before anyone says the 48hour rule.

Previous job, I had two weeks off for stress when s colleague tipped me over the edge. He ended up getting the sack not long after. I left as the manager was relying on me too much to run things when she wasn’t around.

DonkeyHohtay · 12/06/2019 08:09

None. I'm self-employed and being sick means earning no money.

I've had maybe one day this year with a very heavy cold which meant I got very little done. DH hasn't had any time off.

Racheyg · 12/06/2019 08:20

I haven't had a sick day in years. I don't get paid. The only days I take off are because of the kids and that comes out of my annual leave
