How many days off sick have you had this year?

Ive had 3 and I've been told that's high. I had 2 days (back to back) back in Feb due to suspected mild pnumonia. I worked from home for a week before but 2 days I could barely move let alone work.
I've had one more day recently due to a cold. I was coughing up a lot of gung and it triggered my gag reflex and I was sick so they send me home.

I work for a very small company so I think only one other person had had a sick day but so far I've had the most. It's definitely more noticeable in a small team too so I don't want to be seen as a piss taker.

So, is that a lot in the space of 6 months? How many have you had?

Well I jinxed it, my Ds is sick but Dh is off so thank god I don’t have to take a day off. I’m a teacher but I do get 5 days paid leave for family illnesses.

Smellybluecheese · 12/06/2019 09:12

Two days this year with bad asthma. I get every bug going and it quite often goes to my chest so I generally have a few days off sick every winter. The first year my daughter was in nursery was a nightmare as I caught everything she had. She's starting school in September so I'm bracing myself for a new round of bugs. DH never catches anything. Some people's immune systems are better than others. Mind you I also commute on public transport and work with students and he drives and works in an office so I don't think that helps either. I've had freshers flu every year for the past 20!

Bythebanksof · 12/06/2019 09:40

I was out of office sick for 1/2 day this year. It’s the first time I’ve been out sick in several years. I do get sick of course, but can usually work on through it (certainly not as productive though!)

bluetongue · 12/06/2019 09:48

So many here with not very few sick days Shock

I’ve had 1.5 days with a virus, half a day with a migraine and 1 mental health day (I have chronic depression / anxiety). This is considered low where I work.

Oh I forgot about 1 day at short notice to look after my sick dog. This was taken as annual leave but a number of my colleagues told me I should have just called in sick.

My sick days accrue and I have over 7 months worth saved up.

Damntheman · 12/06/2019 10:59

I've had three so far due to flu. I was lucky that I caught it right before the easter holiday or it would have been more like six or seven.. 3 is not high!

Itstheprinciple · 12/06/2019 12:23

I had 3 in Feb due to flu - like proper can't get off the sofa flu. I was properly ill for a week but coincided with weekend and my non working day so only actually needed to be off for 3 days. I wasn't back to full capacity for a couple of weeks though but could make it on to work. Haven't felt that ill in a long time. It wasn't a case of should I phone in today or should I drag myself in. I literally used all my energy just getting to the bathroom. I could no way have done a day's work!

Biancadelrioisback · 12/06/2019 12:33

@Hairyfairy01 no not really. I work from home vary rarely unless I absolutely have to as I hate working from home. Last year I had 5 instances of sickness but I suffer from vertigo and insomnia on occasion, especially when stressed, and had quite a stressful year.

I’m currently not working but when I did I very seldom took sick days. Never more than 2 a year and none at all a lot of years. I was in my last job 8 years and never took a sick day. That being said I am aware that I am very blessed to have the constitution of an ox. I can’t help worrying that the universe is saving up some massive illness for me to offset my years of robust good health.

From an objective POV 3 days sick in six months doesn’t sound a lot to me and if you are ill you have to take the time off.

Groovee · 12/06/2019 12:44

I have fibromyalgia and work in early years. Normally work just mornings but sometimes need to cover afternoons. Only term time

I've been in my current role for 17 months. No sick days, but have had sinusitis at one point.

HotChocolateLover · 12/06/2019 12:45

About 40, all epilepsy related. Not much I can do about 9 seizures and then 3 x 5 minute seizures. Each of those episodes were 3 weeks off work.

HotChocolateLover · 12/06/2019 12:52

@Fluffa That comment really made me chuckle! I work for the NHS and people definitely take the piss. At my old trust, one of the nurses used to go off for the longest time possible, come back for the shortest time possible and then go off again. Apparently she had been doing for years before I even got there.

AnonCancer · 12/06/2019 13:00

2 weeks for a double mastectomy. I work from home though, it'd have been at least 6 weeks otherwise.

I feel not a jot guilty even though it's a v small company as I've had very little time off, even for my chemo and radiotherapy and have been there 7 years with no sick leave before.

I work way over my hours when I'm well so more than make up for it.

It's give and take as far as I'm concerned.

Thinkinghappythoughts · 12/06/2019 13:02
  1. I am a lightweight and will take a day if I feel sick. But then I work my arse off in a stressful job in a country that believes in "mental health" days. No-one appears to mind. Or they haven't said so to my face.

I remember my aunt telling me that she worked for a company where she didn't take 1 day sick in 7 years. One monday she came to work and she and her whole team were made rundant starting from the Wednesday.

I have seen companies completely screw people over. Take a day off sick if needed, those higher up won't show you any loyalty anyway if it's not in their interest.

drinkswineoutofamug · 12/06/2019 13:11

Zero since I changed my job. Yep NHS. Stressful job with a prat of a manager. I can now see my sickness was down to my old job and detrimental to my health. Now a TNA and loving it and no sickness

aposterhasnoname · 12/06/2019 13:14

None since I started this job four years ago. In fact the last time I was off “sick” was ten years ago and that was because my DD was in intensive care after her accident and the company I worked for had a crappy compassionate leave policy.

bellinisurge · 12/06/2019 14:15

I have a colleague who boasted about her sick leave "entitlement" and who made sure she used up her "allowance ". Even when my employer (public sector) clamped down on people taking the piss, she still plays that game. God help the silly woman if she is actually ill.

Juanbablo · 12/06/2019 14:51

None. I've had to take a few days for sick kids. 2 I think.

BettysLeftTentacle · 12/06/2019 15:04

We’ve got one of those too @HotChocolateLover. Those that should be dealing with her are too scared and it’s infuriating. It puts so much more pressure on the rest of the team.

YessicaHaircut · 12/06/2019 15:13

I work in a school so have lots of contact with germy kids! It’s not been too bad a year though - I had 2 days in October with an ear infection and 2 in January with a bad cold.
Then had a week off just before Easter hols due to miscarriage but they didn’t count that towards my absence for the year as it was pregnancy-related.
The trigger point for an absence meeting here is 8 days in a year so I’m well below that.

Hmmmbop · 12/06/2019 15:27

I'm currently on mat leave, but in the year proceeding my mat leave I had 2 days sick, due to mat leave.

However the year before I had 3 separate occasions 1 day for IBS, 2 days for d&v and then 3 weeks for a virus. I've never had that long off before, the previous years it's been one or 2 days max. But the virus went round the team and all bar 2 or 3 had between 2 and 4 weeks off!

When you are ill, you are ill!
