How many days off sick have you had this year?

Ive had 3 and I've been told that's high. I had 2 days (back to back) back in Feb due to suspected mild pnumonia. I worked from home for a week before but 2 days I could barely move let alone work.
I've had one more day recently due to a cold. I was coughing up a lot of gung and it triggered my gag reflex and I was sick so they send me home.

I work for a very small company so I think only one other person had had a sick day but so far I've had the most. It's definitely more noticeable in a small team too so I don't want to be seen as a piss taker.

So, is that a lot in the space of 6 months? How many have you had?

None since January 2017 - I've been lucky not to catch anything. I generally have a pretty good sick record (NHS worker, non-clinical). I think fluffa's comment was a dig at public sector workers.

fiorentina · 11/06/2019 20:50

None so far or for the last few years. I have maybe been lucky.
I think if someone has lots of single days off I’m more suspicious than one period of illness of several days. But I wouldn’t be over concerned re 3 days in a year.

BettysLeftTentacle · 11/06/2019 20:55

4 and I work for the NHS.

3 days to get over the inevitable norovirus that most hospital workers get every year. 1 this week because I have a raging chest infection. I should be off work all week but that’s just not possible.

WindsweptEgret · 11/06/2019 20:58

I would say more than 5 days in a year is a lot, you might have 3 in 5 months then none the rest of the year though.

small2018 · 11/06/2019 20:58

None this year - perhaps I'm due one!

KittenSnuggler · 11/06/2019 20:59

3 days, all due to a lactose intolerance I didn't know I had that came on quite suddenly. I have never felt so sick. My lovely boss offered to drive me home after I turned very green of face at work, but I declined as I was worried I might vomit in his car!

I'm a senior manager in the CS so am used to dealing with absence policies with my staff, who are rarely off sick, but when they are I never treat them like some of the managers referred to here. And three day sick leave in one year isn't high at all. I had 3 weeks off with flu & bronchitis a few years back - I missed Christmas and New Year with my family as I was so ill. I spent the entire holiday period in bed but I only received concern and support from by boss and colleagues. I went back to work as soon as I felt well enough but it was about 3 months before I felt anything like my old self.

Most people don't take the piss and it is incredibly counter-productive to treat them like they are. Top way to piss off your staff and to lose what loyalty they had.

I've not had a sick day in about 5 years and then it was two weeks due to a broken finger and bruised hand.

I very rarely take sick days but I'm in HR so I see how often certain people are off and also hear what other people think/say about some people.

I've always been of the opinion that you have to be really, really, really sick to be off just in case you get a really bad illness or injury that requires longer off.

In 20 years I've had 2 weeks due to broken hand, 4 weeks due to gall stones/recovery from surgery and 2 weeks due to stress. Other than that I've maybe had 5/7 days total with illness - and if I'm honest I consider that a lot.

YesQueen · 11/06/2019 21:02

One sick day, two days for a bereavement

Lairydea · 11/06/2019 21:03

Loads. I've had the worst run of luck though - actual diagnosed flu in jan 5 days (though I felt rotten and still had infection markers three weeks later when I had a blood test for something else), glandular fever (with minor complications that saw me off for 4 days but working from home in agony for the next three weeks), 2 bouts of bronchitis and general usual viral illnesses that have just wiped me out thanks to the glandular fever.

Prior to this year I'd only had 1 or 2 days sick in the last 3 years

YesQueen · 11/06/2019 21:03

I should add there has been years where I have had a LOT more
2016 I was off for 4.5 months

redeyetonowheregood · 11/06/2019 21:04

Zero.

IncognitoIsMyFavouriteWord · 11/06/2019 21:05

I have a long term illness and I haven't had a day off sick in 15 months.

This isn't a boast.

My career is important to me. I've planned hospital visits around days off and annual leave. I've even worked when really feeling quite poorly but this has been at the weekend or evenings.

choli · 11/06/2019 21:08

One 5 day stretch with the flu in 18 years. However for the past 6 years I can work from home if I am under the weather.

LtGreggs · 11/06/2019 21:12

I've had 0.

I have a small business with 6 employees - it's typical for most of them to have 0 days per year. One of my guys has had 4 or 5 days this year - very heavy cold/flu and a d&v bug - it's out of character and I think just pure bad luck.

Have had two employees over the years who declared fairly serious health conditions - even they would have very very few sick days.

I am always astounded at average sick day rates that are quoted as 6+ per year.

Cherrysoup · 11/06/2019 21:14

1 since September.

Ragwort · 11/06/2019 21:15

None. I work p/t & can arrange my own rota, if I was feeling unwell I would rearrange my rota & go in when I felt better.

Tiredmum100 · 11/06/2019 21:19

None so far this year and 3 days in the last two years when I had a virus sometime last year. NHS nurse so not sure what relevance that has!

tangledyarn · 11/06/2019 21:20

Maybe 3 this year but a lot more previously-eg.3 months last year, and a lot of days where I have to work from home go/home early etc. I have a number of chronic health problems and have reduced my hours a lot and try my best so my manager is v supportive and have some reasonable adjustments in place but it's not ideal and very worrying.

haverhill · 11/06/2019 21:21

5 since September but that’s very unusual. Most years probably 1 or 2.

Stopyourhavering64 · 11/06/2019 21:49

2 days- and only because a work colleague came in with stinking cold...work for nhs but I also have rare autoimmune disease and on immunosuppressant medication, so can't take any risks

C0untDucku1a · 11/06/2019 22:13

None in the past 2 years. Before that i had three weeks off in january two years running due to chest infections.

elastamum · 11/06/2019 22:16

Three weeks then another eight working at home. Broke both my arms.

64632K · 11/06/2019 22:20

0 this year, went 5 years without a sick day until I needed surgery then was off for 6 months. 3 days isn't high unless they are calculating against the Bradford score and if it was three separate single bouts of sickness, even then its not high
