How many days off sick have you had this year?

Biancadelrioisback · 11/06/2019 16:10

Ive had 3 and I've been told that's high. I had 2 days (back to back) back in Feb due to suspected mild pnumonia. I worked from home for a week before but 2 days I could barely move let alone work.
I've had one more day recently due to a cold. I was coughing up a lot of gung and it triggered my gag reflex and I was sick so they send me home.

I work for a very small company so I think only one other person had had a sick day but so far I've had the most. It's definitely more noticeable in a small team too so I don't want to be seen as a piss taker.

So, is that a lot in the space of 6 months? How many have you had?

0 for years.
Only because I can work from home if I feel ill, and that I’m pretty much always contactable due to info needed for safeguarding so I refuse to take sick if I’m being rung off the hook regardless.

Nemesia1264 · 11/06/2019 19:57

0 this year, quite lucky recently. NHS clinical.
I imagine fluffa is also clinical with the NHS comment. Handling body fluids / patients coughing / throwing up over you does tend to make for contracting more illnesses. Don't know why that needs explicit explanation really.

cricketmum84 · 11/06/2019 19:58

None this year but I'm quite fortunate to be able to work from home if I have an IBS flare up (need to be near my own loo) or feel ill. I have had to take a day and a couple of hours dependants leave for poorly kids though.

I don't think 3 days is a lot for halfway through the year. One of my team has had about that and I certainly aren't worried about his absence and attendance.

Lauren83 · 11/06/2019 20:02

I have managed to not have any in the 3 years in my current job, last job I was in 9 years and had a week twice for gynae surgery

TellerTuesday4EVA · 11/06/2019 20:05

It's all relative... I've had 2 days off sick (consecutive days) in 18 years, that's not to say I won't come down with a virus next week.

I don't think yours is particularly high.

LittleGinBigGin · 11/06/2019 20:06

Eek I’ve had a few...

I had 8 days off when I was hospitalised for gallstones and I’ve had another 2 days this week for a colonoscopy. Now (well when I see my consultant I will have my official diagnosis) so I suspect I will have some more time off, all of which will be beyond my control.

However my boss is very blasé about it all and I’ve had an occupational health referral and they are keen/happy to make adjustments for me.

Previous to this I’ve had maybe 1 or 2 days off in 15 year career.

HSKNT · 11/06/2019 20:06

One day this year when I shit myself at work SadShock

SnugglySnerd · 11/06/2019 20:10

3 since Sept. 2 were for a vomiting bug, the third was when my period was so heavy I flooded 3 times in an hour. That would be totally unmanageable in my classroom which is a 5 min walk to the loo in a separate building so I dealt with it at home.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 11/06/2019 20:14

None since 2002 if we don't count giving birth before I'd started mat leave.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 11/06/2019 20:17

5 so far. 2 in February and 3 last week.
Before that though it had been close to 3 years with none.

Doodlebug5 · 11/06/2019 20:17

2 weeks off as I had shingles on the face and a few days with a chest infection. Its particularly high because I'm on immunosupressants and work is aware of this and supporting me with it

Gamorasgran · 11/06/2019 20:21

3 isn't high I don't think.

I've had a few - I had some fairly major mh issues (massively exacerbated by work) at the start of the year so a few days off there. A couple of bad colds and a migraine.

I generally wfh with a cold because I have a flexible workplace and a small team where bugs spread like wildfire but if I really don't feel up to it I don't force myself and will happily send poorly juniors home if they aren't up to it. Generally sickness is only raised once someone has over a week without there being a clear reason (my mh issues were never queried for example and I was encouraged to take more time because there was acknowledgment they had made them worse...)

LaurieFairyCake · 11/06/2019 20:22

Not one.

Nor in the last 15 years.

Self employed Wink

GymKitJen · 11/06/2019 20:23

None in at least 2.5 years. I've been sick but it's always timed itself At the weekend or when I'm on leave 🤷‍♀️

RuthW · 11/06/2019 20:23

Three is high. I have had a week due to an operation. I'd say average where I work is one day a year. Last time I had a day off sick other than my op was probably about 5 years ago. I don't know more than one person in my place of work that has had any time off this year.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 11/06/2019 20:24

I work in a school - I had five days off with shingles 3 years ago (doctor's orders, not my choice) . Nothing since. I seem to manage to save all my sickness for school holidays.

PonderingPanda · 11/06/2019 20:24

I think Fluffa comment about the NHS was a dig at the high sickness rates amongst the staff.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 11/06/2019 20:27

Too many! Since I started a new job in September I've had days off due to anxiety, shingles, reaction to new meds for the anxiety, stress induced migraine.

It's the most days off I've ever had in my working life. Until this year, I'd had about 4 days off overall.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 11/06/2019 20:27

I had one day off in 2017 (v&d on a Friday so cleared up by the Monday).

BearSoFair · 11/06/2019 20:27

Two days in a row because of a dental abcess last month. First sick days since November 2016.

Kim82 · 11/06/2019 20:30

I’ve had 3 weeks off sick this year recovering from an operation. No other absences over the last 12 months.

WindsweptEgret · 11/06/2019 20:33

None, last day off was in 2015. I'm not going to stay home when I just have a cold and lose a day's pay. My 13 year old has had one day off sick this school year, none last year.

jollyohh · 11/06/2019 20:36

None but have been ill loads

Biancadelrioisback · 11/06/2019 20:39

All my colleagues (bar 1) are parents of young children and they all have a right face on if I come in and I'm under the weather (not ill ill, but obviously not 100%). As I say, I catch everything going. Even this week I've had sinusitis and cystitis. A really shite combination. I swear the pressure in my head was forcing razor blades out my urethra. But I've gone in because I know I can physically work and not contagious so I don't take a day off for every illness if that makes sense.

10 weeks - 2 hip replacements! But before that the I'd say 2 or 3 for chest infections.
