Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Fairy soap. The smell is amazing and reminds me of my little nan, but you can't get it now. Gutted!

Not gone, but disappearing are traditional cafes, I was in London and was looking for one and could not find one anywhere. There used to be one on every street corner. Cheap tea in tannin stained cups and chips with everything.

@niceladyatthedrs

Yes, I’m surprised at the amount of people in their 20s who don’t say please and thank you. Especially in emails at work.

Cassie71 · 12/06/2019 20:58

Little chef and Kwik save

x2boys · 12/06/2019 21:04

Ah but do they say kind regards instead Swimmer?

EggysMom · 12/06/2019 21:05

As somebody else said, reins are very useful for SN children who are runners - we've used reins for our son since he started walking, and still do so on occasion at the age of 9 Smile

Koolbeans · 12/06/2019 21:08

#Niceladyatthedrs. Totally agree with you. I've always passed onto my family, there aren't many things in this world that are free and good manners is one of them. A please and thank you or excuse me go a long way.

Love a nice rum and raisin ice cream, we can always get one down Margate lovely ice cream parlour there. What about oysters from the ice cream vans do they still do them??

Wood liquorice.
Cheese plants, Rubber plants, didn't all homes have them?
Doillies. They were everywhere and under everything!
Nest of tables. Matched with the burgundy chesterfield furniture and flock wallpaper.
Ashtrays on stands.

Findus crispy pancakes.
Scholls. Clogs.
Dolly Rockers.

AlexaAmbidextra · 12/06/2019 21:46

Carpediem. Your list is so nostalgic. I think we must be the same fine vintage. 😄

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/06/2019 21:50

Ashtrays in cars

You don't get a fag lighter either. Being slowly replaced by USB sockets with adaptors for older cars. You could probably show a 'young person' a car cigarette lighter and they wouldn't know what it was.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/06/2019 21:50

Has anyone said cheques and travellers cheques yet?

SkintAsASkintThing · 12/06/2019 21:58

Button boxes

CasanovaFrankenstein · 12/06/2019 22:18

@spidersonmyceiling this has brought back cherished memories of my great aunt's house, I thought maybe I had it confused but no, there was actually a cover on the seat itself. Grim.

Not sure what happened to the end of your last post!

CasanovaFrankenstein · 12/06/2019 22:20

Warning : toilet seat cover wrongness

Dear Sweetpeanuts, you can still get Dr Scholl sandals on Amazon, though the soles look suspiciously plastic!

... and just look at these beauties on eBay Smile

Is the little Chef roundabout near Milton Keynes?

Loving this thread. So many memories. Can’t believe Toast Toppers are no longer made.

Fountain pens in schools.

GabsAlot · 12/06/2019 23:46
