Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

You can still get jubblies. My dc love them.

origamiunicorn · 21/06/2019 18:23

Can you?! Please tell me where!

Having just spent 4 weeks in the UK "involuntarily", so unplanned, I would say:

  1. Common sense
  2. Good manners
  3. Lack of basic, raw, seasonal ingredients to cook with (swede and carrots in June?)
howwudufeel · 21/06/2019 19:01

origamiunicorn I think I have bought mine in Iceland and Sainsbury’s.

Swiss rolls. Or are they too common for Waitrose?

I often get Swiss roll from Waitose, usually for pudding on Saturday as my lads like it with custard ( a hang over from school dinners apparently!!)

Dear MissLadyM I remember "Bonne Belle" but I just remember the name, I don't actually remember anything else about it! You'll have to remind me.
Was thinking also, when I was a child we always had white eggs. They came in pastel-coloured polystyrene egg boxes (which I cut up and used to make Sindy House furniture, but perhaps that's another thread) - my point is, white eggs were 'normal', and brown eggs were less common & regarded as healthier (?). But you don't really see white eggs any more, do you? Well, not so much. Brown eggs seem to be 'the norm' these days!

Loveislandaddict · 22/06/2019 05:17

Sunny Delight is still available, as Sunny D, although it has been re-formulated now.

wowfudge · 22/06/2019 08:36

Doesn't the colour of eggs depend on the colour of the chicken? The perception is probably that brown eggs are healthier even though they are nutritionally identical to white so eggs farmers have just switched to brown hen varieties.

wowfudge · 22/06/2019 08:39

Sunny Delight - a fortune spent on marketing when that came out. Contained vegetable oil didn't it?

jennymanara · 22/06/2019 11:09

I had forgotten about the pastel coloured polystyrene egg boxes.

Anyone remember Love cosmetics from Boots? Came in silvery packaging - the lipsticks in silver cases - and smelt very strongly of Lemon! Helena Rubenstein Apple Blossom perfume and Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass Dusting Powder in a funny concertina like package! Mary Quant nail polishes in a small square bottle and Miner's too! Aaah the memories!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 23/06/2019 20:28

Americans still eat white eggs.

bebeboeuf · 23/06/2019 22:14

I eat white eggs as they are what Waitrose sell as their cheapest free range egg option

DearLady · 23/06/2019 22:40

Anyone who enjoys a bit of cosmetics / toiletries nostalgia should check out Sali Hughes’ Iconic Make-Up (or whatever...) book.
She’s of a similar vintage as me, but she goes through stuff from every decade. She really evokes the feelings / memories from those products.

howwudufeel · 24/06/2019 12:12

Constance Carroll make up!

notacooldad · 24/06/2019 12:26

I'm my New Romantic days I used to wear Charles of the Ritz eye shadow. They did a khaki one that was perfect. I also had a Prescriptives lipstick that was the best colour ever for me.
I think CotR has long gone. I'm not sure what happened to Prescriptives. I've not thought about them until now!

notacooldad · 24/06/2019 12:31

I meant in my New Romantic days!!!
