Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Too busy to proof read so many mistakes😂.
Meant elasticated cover.
Nan made the best tea.

Carpediem1 · 12/06/2019 11:46

So many memories #Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes I had forgotten about tea in glass cups and saucers! And also that 1950s green pottery/china with was everywhere especially hospitals.
Blue Jeans magazine Smile and what about Twinkle, Bunty, Jackie, Just 17....
But then some things are definitely better now - I guess that is a new thread!

dollydee · 12/06/2019 12:07

The 1950s crockery was Woods ware I think. Green, blue, yellow or pink. I remember this on the wards when I was training. Very sturdy!

Carpediem1 · 12/06/2019 13:09

Thank you - you're right it did come in other colours!
One thing I remember from the 1970s /80s was washing our hair over the basin with a beaker of water - no showers! Our family hadn't heard of conditioner so hours combing 'bird nests' out of long hair. Do children still have plaits?

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2019 13:32

Brownies and guides still exist!

I think a lot of things on this thread still exist, but the posters don’t need them anymore.

Papergirl1968 · 12/06/2019 15:27

Prompted by another thread, smacking kids. I think if you do see a kid smacked in public these days, it’s so rare that whatever your views on smacking it’s quite shocking to see it.

Owlish · 12/06/2019 15:28

Wood's Ware. Beryl, Jasmine and Iris. I have more pieces, but I'm using these at the moment ❤️

My mum had a banana sandwich for her lunch yesterday. We have a launderettes near us which I use sometimes and we also get our milk delivered in glass bottles.

ChanklyBore · 12/06/2019 15:58

I feel like i live in the past. We have a milk float with glass bottles which wakes everyone up clinking down the road at 6am. We have a rag and bone man who comes round shouting ragbone, with a scruffy piebald pony pulling the cart. I have a landline and vertical blinds. I don’t have WhatsApp but I have an eye level grill. You can buy penny sweets in the corner shop (and 2p and 5p ones) and a 20p mix up. We have a launderette, a green grocers, a bakers that doesn’t sell sandwiches (but the butchers do), a haberdashery and a wool shop. I have an alarm clock and a wristwatch and a nest of tables. The local shop sells happy shopper stuff to the people wearing headscarves and flat caps!

SwimmerGirl40 · 12/06/2019 16:11

@Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes
That’s a comfort list!

Loved toast toppers as a kid, had forgotten about them until you mentioned it though.

I still have a hot water bottle and extra blanket in the winter. Could probably just turn the heating up a bit, but hot water bottles are comforting!

Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes · 12/06/2019 16:12

#ChanklyBore. Sounds absolutely devine...think I need to move to a more simpler time/era.
#Owlish they are gorgeous. Much nicer than all the patterned ones you can get now!
#Carpediem1 I still wash my hair over the sink with a jug sometimes...it's easier than bending down over the bath.
I also remember all those mags you mentioned that I spent my babysitting money on haha along with the latest 45" singles from the top 40. Pure bliss!!

Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes · 12/06/2019 16:16

#SwimmerGirl40. I've been in touch with Heinz and unfortunately that no longer make Toast Toppers..such a shame as they really were delicious for a nice snack!

Yes it's definitely a 'comfort list'😂

Notquiteagandt · 12/06/2019 16:31

SwimmerGirl40 · 12/06/2019 18:03

Co-op do a nice rum and raisin ice cream.

Following on from this thread, I got some blancmange powder from Sainsbury’s, along with some green jelly cubes. Now I just need to track down one of those rabbit moulds, so I can treat DD - she’s always so (un)impressed with 80s food😂😂😂

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2019 18:25

You can get rabbit jelly moulds in Lakeland.

SwimmerGirl40 · 12/06/2019 18:33

Isitmybathtimeyet · 12/06/2019 18:50

Not very long ago I wasn’t allowed a rum and raisin ice cream for my daughter in a cafe, because she is under 18!

GabsAlot · 12/06/2019 18:55

Oh ffs really? Thats ridiculous

Soola · 12/06/2019 18:59

niceladyatthedrs · 12/06/2019 19:34

Good manners

LarryGreysonsDoor · 12/06/2019 19:57

Ashtrays in cars!

I only realised today when I was behind a car and I couldn’t understand why he was flicking his ash out if the window.
