Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

"Black cherry ice cream is a sight seldom seen these days. Not in Italy though. The sensible Italians still make and sell it" loved this and proper tutti frutti ice cream (a local place sells something they call this but it's not the same at all)

"those very basic Maclaren pushchairs with red, white and blue striped seats." I got one like that for dd for a beach holiday as I didn't want to wreck the "good" expensive one we'd bought her. It was so much easier to use and dd preferred it that I ended up basically ditching the "good" one making it an expensive mistake. The MacLaren was £10 I think in mothercare approx 17 years ago.

"Party songs from the 1980's..."Hands up,put your hands up,give me your heart" etc
Superman song
Agadoo." One of dds sleepover birthdays I ended up teaching her and her friends the moves to all these sort of songs - they loved it and had an absolute ball! It's now nearly 5 years later and I still get the kids commenting what a fun night that was and they'll do a little "sample dance" 😂😂

I did my nurse training in the early 90's, in the new hospital I was training in there was still blue/green crockery from the 50's being used that stuff must have been virtually indestructible!

"Not gone, but disappearing are traditional cafes" we had a fantastic greasy spoon locally, very popular, then the owners retired and sold it (thinking they'd sold to people who "got it") but the new people did away with milkshakes, got in a fancy barista coffee machine and stopped doing mugs of tea, changed the food menu getting rid of cooked breakfasts etc... Idiots! They went bust in 6 months! The place had been going for over 40 years before that!

"What about oysters from the ice cream vans do they still do them??" Definitely here in Scotland, nougat wafers too.

You really miss those cafes then?

I know where proper licorice sticks / roots can be bought.

Deathraystare · 13/06/2019 08:07

Mum deodorant. I was looking at the deodorant (ok Anti perspirant) on the shelves and suddenly realised there was no 'mum'. Ok I never used 'mum' much but suddenly realised it had gone. Ditto Imperial Leather original for the bath and shower.

Deathraystare · 13/06/2019 08:08

Loseleys ice cream. Used to have the ice cream or sorbet in the theatres.

OublietteBravo · 13/06/2019 08:34

I used a fountain pen for work.

I recently introduced DS (13) to fountain pens. He’s a convert!

Carpediem1 · 13/06/2019 08:41

#SkintAsASkintThing I still have a button box!

Carpediem1 · 13/06/2019 08:44

#tigertiger10 Can you believe candy cigarettes were allowed?! We thought we were so cool pretending to smoke....

BarbaraofSevillle · 13/06/2019 08:50

I also still have a button box. I keep all the spare buttons that come with clothes and when they got to many, I gave a load of them to a friend's DM who makes twiddle muffs, which are knitted tube things with buttons and bits of ribbon on, which are useful/helpful in some way to people with dementia.

Carpediem1 · 13/06/2019 08:53

Yes #Deathraystare Mum deodorant! Prompted by this nostalgic trip down memory lane,I was trying to remember what soaps and stuff were around when I was young and 'Mum' came back to me (can't imagine a company picking that as a name these days)! Funny how you can look for something in a shop, not see it but not realise it has gone forever...

x2boys · 13/06/2019 09:03

I did the same @Graphista I got a very cheap buggie from woolworths, which has also disappeared btw,for ds1 when he was a toddler and we went to Turkey,I can't remember wether it was a McLaren but it was striped,it was so much easier than the expensive all singing all dancing pushchair ,I carried on using it😂,I remember that NHS crockery didn't they also have a brown version?also did my nurse training in the early 90,s.

notacooldad · 13/06/2019 09:07

You can still buy Mum deodorant.

notacooldad · 13/06/2019 09:11

Has anyone said cheques and travellers cheques yet?
They are still going although I havent used a chequebook book since 2005!
Dp gets cheques from customers .

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/06/2019 09:14

CMS1972 - Oooh I loved Weekend! Do you remember Nestle Home Made Assortment too - chocs in a plain white box with red 'ribbon' round it. Also Cadbury's Tokens and proper Milk Tray. What happened to those boiled sweets which had a fruit puree in the middle - can't remember what they were called.

PhillisPearce · 13/06/2019 09:33

Playtex bras /wonder bras

Graphista · 13/06/2019 09:49

Fruit bonbons I could really go some of them right now

x2boys · 13/06/2019 09:49

Does anywhere still accept cheques?

Superlooper · 13/06/2019 09:49

Still get icecream in cardboard and ketchup in glass bottles (making a come back, I think) here (Ireland). Girl guides still going.

Superlooper · 13/06/2019 09:49

And still accept cheques

Kazzyhoward · 13/06/2019 09:52

Does anywhere still accept cheques?

Maybe not large supermarkets, but smaller independent shops tend to, as do tradesmen (plumbers etc) and professionals such as solicitors and accountants. It's only really the big supermarkets that don't accept them.

LenizarLyublyu · 13/06/2019 10:09

Cream soda

I can send you some from my local Sainsbury's Wink

notacooldad · 13/06/2019 10:15

Are you living in the distant future or something. All those things are still around and not disappeared.

Disfordarkchocolate · 13/06/2019 10:16

Wrote a cheque for the Christmas turkey and realised the cheque before it was for the previous turkey.
