Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

Tinned fruit with sterilised cream was always pudding after a Sunday lunch of boil in the bag sliced beef in gravy with mashed potato and cabbage.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/06/2019 14:55

You did have to shake it. Or not, and pour off the liquid to leave even thicker cream behind.
Small tins meant smaller portions too. And no waste

wowfudge · 15/06/2019 17:20

Condensed milk is sweetened too.

I'll pass on the tinned cream.

I'm confused about missing power cuts, don't they still happen!? Confused

HoolaCoola · 16/06/2019 10:19

I want to know where pink and blue toilet rolls have gone. Only seem to be able to find white and cream these days

origamiunicorn · 16/06/2019 13:24

I've not experienced a power cut for over a decade.

floraloctopus · 16/06/2019 13:35

Go to Argentina, they don't do power cuts on a small scale there apparently.

80sMum · 16/06/2019 13:45

Crikey! Where do you live origami? We have power cuts several times a year: they last for anything from about 30 seconds (just long enough to bugger up all the clocks and timers!) to several hours! I have the number to report a power cut listed in my phone as a contact!

origamiunicorn · 16/06/2019 13:52

Dorset. I can't speak for the whole of Dorset of course Smilebut I personally haven't had a power cut since I moved to this house (2008) where I used to live we had at least one or two a year that I remember.

cheeseislife8 · 16/06/2019 13:57

@QueSera we still have lollipop people where I live!

LadySainsburySeal · 16/06/2019 14:59

If we have a week without a power cut we’re lucky. It's usually the night after I've given in and reset the cooker clock yo the actual time without having to remember (we’re) having to take 4 hours off etc.

We have no gas in this village so any power cut means we can't cook either.

wanderings · 16/06/2019 19:48

Machines which sold stamps.

SwimmerGirl40 · 17/06/2019 14:15

@origamiunicorn

I haven’t had a power cut for 2 years and that was unusual. It lasted pretty much all morning. Don’t remember any before that, for a long time.

I live in a suburb of Manchester but I grew up in the countryside, where power cuts were a pretty regular event back in the 80s and 90s, at least.

I have a black out kit though - candles and matches, plus some camping equipment like a solar powered lamp and charger. Along with some books and some paper & pen games for the kids.

cms1972 · 20/06/2019 12:14

Gosh, Cremolia! Can you still get Cremolia? My mum used to have that stuff right there in the kitchen, next to the washing up liquid. And thank you MissLadyM "Nailoid" certainly does ring a bell, I think you may be right! Not that I can find nail buffing cream anyway, but having the exact name could help. Ebay here I come!
Dear LarryGreysonsDoor I would be only too happy to come and sit in the dark in your parents' house, but as I remember the power cuts we had in the 70s only lasted for half an hour... not days!!
And does anyone else remember "Lemon Delph" (?) an astringent toner that used to be available from Boots? You put it on some cotton wool, wiped it over your face and voila! Disrupted the acid mantle of your skin for the next three decades! (see also Ten-O-Six).
Re; Germolene, Nailoid, Cremolia et al, it makes you wonder why they don't bring these things back. They'd have a ready-made market. I know if they brought back the old Rimmel foundations & nail varnishes (pink blossom foundation, sweet scarlet & rainbow shimmer nail varnish etc) in the original packaging, I'd be first in the queue. I await a new trend in "Nostalgia shopping" with interest!

.. and I miss having only a few TV channels. It gave me a sense of community, standing at the bus stop for school the next day, knowing that 90% of the other people there also watched Morecambe & Wise last night. I know we've got all these channels now, but I find that having flicked through 60 or so, I have to go back to the beginning because they're all crap because there's nothing I want to watch. And on the subject of telly, who else remembers how programmes came to an end at early o'clock and then the TV played the national anthem!! My mum actually used to stand up when it came on. Then the picture would disappear to a point of light and a long continuous tone sounded. That was your cue to turn it off & go to bed. But BBC2 carried on & showed the Open University programmes, some bearded guy in a knitted fair isle waistcoat banging around on a blackboard til 3am. And the aerial was ON TOP of the TV! If the picture wibbled about, you had to walk across the room & mess with it. Though of course with no remotes, you had to walk across the room to change channels too; I think childhood obesity probably began with the introduction of the TV remote TBH.... wow, this thread is making me feel old !!

SwimmerGirl40 · 20/06/2019 12:42

@cms1972
I sometimes miss only having a few channels. It’s now high quantity but low low quality in that I’ve got loads to choose from but a lot of its crap.

I don’t remember the OU being on TV. Would that be when the OU was cheap and therefore accessible to all? Unlike now.

cms1972 · 20/06/2019 12:59

Hi SwimmerGirl40 yes it would. That was when a university education was free to any school leaver who was brainy enough, but if you wanted to do a degree in later life, the OU was available to do part-time for a relatively small fee. You just had to stay up til 3am to catch the lectures on TV.
I have an update on the Nailoid cream! It's now called "Nailoid Buff and Shine". I'm sure it's the same stuff as it says it gives a long lasting 'wet look' shine. But I have looked on several sites & it's either out of stock or unavailable Sad .. I also found a post from other people desperate to get hold of it & some have got in touch to say they still have theirs from 20, 30 years ago! No doubt that is why it has been discontinued. There's no profit in a product that people buy only once in 30 years, is there? Pffff.

Papergirl1968 · 20/06/2019 18:54

Oh my mom loved her Cremola (didn’t think it was spelt Cremolia but I might be wrong). The hand cream in the squat glass jar from Boots. You could still get it occasionally till about two or three years ago but not seen it lately. Our local Boots is in a bit of a time warp and was probably selling stock from about 1975.

Loveislandaddict · 20/06/2019 20:25

Rise-n-shine - does anyone remember it? It was orange juice in a powder form. You mixed it with water to make a drink. I loved it as a child. Preferred it to fizzy drinks (which we only had on high days and holidays).

thenightsky · 20/06/2019 21:29

Yes... Rise and Shine... came in orange or grapefruit flavour. We were allowed it on Sunday mornings.

wowfudge · 20/06/2019 22:52

Kellogg's made Rise 'n' Shine.

cms1972 · 20/06/2019 23:36

God yes, Kelloggs "Rise and Shine", it would be interesting to see the ingredients list today!

Isitmybathtimeyet · 21/06/2019 00:00

I don’t miss it but I hadn’t realised till recently that Sunny Delight has disappeared. Anyone remember when they got told off for suggesting shops kept it in fridges because nothing in it was actually fresh enough to need refrigeration?

MissLadyM · 21/06/2019 00:25

I remember Delph skincare! Does anyone remember Bonnie Bell? I got a free sample with Jackie as a tween and nearly ended up like Gary Oldman on Hannibal!

origamiunicorn · 21/06/2019 17:58

What were those ice lollies shaped like pyramids, that were really juicy and fruity? Came in orange and strawberry I think Hmm
