Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

I made some of these for my little one last year and I swear the girls at nursery thought I was crazy. They were everywhere when I was a child. However that was the early 70s... 🤣

Banks

sunshine11 · 10/06/2019 17:46

Flat caps?! Loads of people I know wear them. They’re cool for the hipster type!

MITCHELL33 · 10/06/2019 17:47

Donkey jackets children playing Jacks people cleaning their front door step "with a donkey stone".

ARoseTintedWorld · 10/06/2019 17:48

Rainbow plastic doorway curtains.

You still see the odd toddler with rucksack reins, and i’m Sure wrist reins were fairly commonplace when mine were toddlers (18 years ago). I think my mum still has my childhood reins.

Preparing baby bottles in advance - apparently this is no longer a thing anymore.

Loveislandaddict · 10/06/2019 17:51

Spider plants

WiltshireGirl · 10/06/2019 17:51

I remember the white dog poo in the 70's, dog food was different then.

Yoghurty · 10/06/2019 17:52

Squashed bugs on the windshield after driving on the motorway. Used to see them all the time- not any more

beingmum39 · 10/06/2019 17:54

Frosties sweets
Cadburys spiral bars
Woolworths... That was tragic the best pick a mix ever! Plus the place to buy your singles from the current top 40 on cassette or record

ellesworth · 10/06/2019 17:55

Was telling my DH the other day that my nana used to buy big jars of picked vegetables, there was bits of cauliflower and I think onions and possibly baby carrots? I don't remember seeing them since the 90s.

Zilla1 · 10/06/2019 17:56

Insects on car windscreens. When I was younger, cars would get covered in insects in Summer, sometimes from a single journey. I don't see a dead fly on my windscreen from one month to the next.

It might be influenced by more aerodynamic cars or environmental damage and farming monoculture and pesticides. Bit scary if the latter.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 10/06/2019 17:56

Rucksack reins are relatively common. I bought one when my first was a toddler and she refused to go anywhere unless she was holding ‘the tail’. So that worked well.

Bozlem80 · 10/06/2019 17:56

Shops on nearly every street corner
White dog poo
Little red spiders that would crawl on the outside walls
Actual snow before Christmas
Newspaper boys/girls
Toy in the cereal box
The bin men physically picking up the bin & putting the rubbish in the wagon
The smell of Jeyes fluid

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 17:56

Ooh, I like spider plants.

I might get one to go with the new macrame plant pot hanger I’ll be making. I’m signing up for a macrame class, after reading some earlier posts on here.

My toes.

Pint of prawns and chicken in the basket

Smoking on airplanes. The seats had ashtrays.

Visiting the cockpit as a child and sitting in the pilots seat (No, Airplane comedy film, not like that).

Smoking at work then as a result of some nanny state instructions, colleagues taking work to read in smoking rooms with inadequate extractor fans.

Being able to post a letter at lunchtime saying they would be late back to work that night and the letter arriving that afternoon (probably just London?).

Three UK TV channels with children's programmes show for a couple of hours in the early evening.

'Phoning the call box to get the time or listen to the chart music.

Oh my.

CockSpadget · 10/06/2019 18:06

Those plastic strips that used to hang off the back of cars (something to do with preventing car sickness apparently)
Garfield and Bagpuss with suction pads on their feet stuck on car windows.
Hedgerows covered in tangles of brown cassette or vhs tape.
Piles of fag ends in car parks where people emptied their car ashtrays.

Beautga · 10/06/2019 18:07

Multi coloured Fry chocolate bars

LadyRannaldini · 10/06/2019 18:08

Flat caps for men

Still very normal male wear in the country.

Xxalisoncxx · 10/06/2019 18:12
