Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

I booked my first holiday after finding a deal on teletext.

We used to get some cracking deals from Teletext, OH once went out to get the Sunday paper and when he returned I told him We're off to Greece, tomorrow morning.

A lot of the household things mentioned on here you can still buy from the Junk Shop in town, it's actually called something else, we work on the principle that if they don't have it, it doesn't exist.

JoJo Maman Bebe doing elasticated clips for gloves and mittens so you can clip them to sleeves instead of strings. Strangely the pink and blue National Health glasses seem to be making a comeback. I've seen kids at school in very similar ones, out of choice.

Neighbours getting each other’s washing in when it rained.
People just calling round.

TatianaLarina · 10/06/2019 18:18

Pacers. Where did they go?

ferrier · 10/06/2019 18:19

White dog poo

Not sure whether anyone has responded to this as haven't rtwt but my dog does white poo sometimes. Related to how much bone she's eaten as she's a raw fed dog.

Someone mentioned candlewick bedspreads. I love them in winter over the duvet. They make the room look neat and tidy also.

You can still buy them, the cheap thin ones are not good, but there are thicker luxury ones around, but generally quite expensive. Maybe they are just an older persons thing (me). but I live in a chilly old house,so very good in my place.

£1.99 bottles of repulsive Leibfraumilsch from Safeway and other shops. That'd do me for a night when I was a student.

pepperpot99 · 10/06/2019 18:24

Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I saw an off licence; we used to go to our local offy all the time, they had a video library and everything. This was in the 80s.

Blockbuster video shops, anyone?

Cereals with a toy in. I use to love rummaging through a new box of cornflakes when I was a kid.

LadyRannaldini · 10/06/2019 18:26

Vent Vert perfume, Balmain, it came in a bright green cube-shaped bottle and was wonderful, e-bay actually sells the empty bottles.

pepperpot99 · 10/06/2019 18:27

Does anyone remember Miners make up ? and also the Tu range which I think was in Woolies?

TigerLilyMasie · 10/06/2019 18:28

Swisskit Bars

Little cardboard piece you got with Bounty bar.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 10/06/2019 18:28

Electric blue mascara. With matching kohl eyeliner on the water-line.

Oh, and 'Twilight Teaser' lipstick.

Eeuch! Some fashions it's a positive pleasure to leave in the past.

ALongHardWinter · 10/06/2019 18:28

notacooldad Glad that someone agrees with me! Smile. I've seen quite a few parents using the wrist strap rein things, and I always think that they must be pretty inadequate (the wrist strap, not the parent!). I imagine that if the child tried to do a runner, they'd end up practically dislocating their arm from their shoulder. And the reins I used on my DD were so useful when she was at the stage of walking, but still being prone to stumbling and falling over. A gentle tug on the reins and they'd be back on their feet again. You can't do that with a wrist strap.

ferrier · 10/06/2019 18:29

Lion bars

You can still get Lion bars.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 10/06/2019 18:30

It was raining too hard to go for a run this morning so I’ve just been out for a walk. I walked around our whole estate of about 500 houses. I counted 36 houses with vertical blinds. There might have been more but I was distracted by cats.

willowmelangell · 10/06/2019 18:34

Bone handled butter knives.

Sweetpeanutsandcolacubes · 10/06/2019 18:39

Telephone locks.
Door keys on string. (Through the letterbox).
Neighbours all sitting out the fronts of houses on a summer's evening.
Postman at 7am then again at 11am.
Bilko trucks...fabulous fizzy flavours and you got money back from returning the bottles.
Salvation Army on a Sunday.
Rag and bone man...'any old lumber' lol I love reminiscing!!
Buying cheese or ham and it was wrapped in paper at the counter.
Proper plastic tea caddy on the kitchen wall.
Twin tubs and wooden tongs.
Bright orange foot pouffes. (Loads of ways to spell it)
I'm another child of the 70s and could go on all day 😆

Another child of the 70's with numerous memories.

wineoclockthanks · 10/06/2019 18:40

Nuns.
I actually saw one on the High Street yesterday and realised that it's been ages since I saw one.

1forAll74 · 10/06/2019 18:41

I think these are still around, but I never see people using children's reins now. I always used to put reins on my toddler children, when shopping,or walking along the road etc.stops all the scooting about in a shop,or walking into the road etc.

Boysey45 · 10/06/2019 18:42

I bet not many remember children playing with a tennis ball in the leg of a pair of tights. I remember playing with this and you stood next to a tall wall/house side and hit it over your head, under your arm etc with your back facing the wall.

Simonfromharlow · 10/06/2019 18:42

@pepperpot99 yes I remember miners. And also 'spectacular' who made loss of colours of nail varnish!

notacooldad · 10/06/2019 18:42

Sorry if its already been mentioned but the cockle and muscle man who went round the pubs at night.
Last time I saw one would have been mid 80s

LadyRannaldini · 10/06/2019 18:42

You hardly see kids with roller skates/blades or even skateboards now

If you do see them they wear more protection than the guys had on D-day, (as my late father used to say about American football players).

cafenoirbiscuit · 10/06/2019 18:42

Mary Quant cosmetics. I had a makeover at the counter once and came home on the bus looking like a clown !
