Things that disappeared, without you realising?

What things have disappeared in society, and you did not notice until much later?
So when I was young in every shopping street you would see old women wearing coloured polyester macs and headscarves. And then one day I suddenly realised that I had not seen a woman wearing this kind of clothing for a long time.
The same with plastic rainhoods. You used to see these for sale in newsagents, and elderly women would wear them when caught unaware by the rain. Again disappeared.

We have a rotary dial phone with a very loud ring but mostly use our mobiles anyway. The kids were intrigued when we first got it from a local charity shop but had to shown that you need to pick up the receiver before dialling.

Also the cord that you put through coats for mittens with the clips. JoJo Maman Bebe sold them recently. I had them for my kids and the youngest is 8 so not that long ago.

@thenightsky I've never heard that word in my life! But yes I think that's what they are!

Young’s Brewery in SW London used shire horses to deliver beer until the brewery close about 10-15 years ago.

Fireside coffee. My mum used to get it from Safeway (don’t know if it was their own brand). It had chicory in it.
It was quite nice!

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2019 14:03

I put the dc’s and my gloves on elastic through our coat sleeves.

I think a lot of the things mentioned on this thread do still exist, but posters’ lives have moved on from needing them. 10 years ago I couldn’t have told you about gloves on strings, but then I had children!

BikeRunSki · 10/06/2019 14:09

@Mac47 that would be amazing! Thank you. I’ll pay postage off course. I’ve tried to PM you but you have turned off receiving PMs.

Young men smoking tobacco in pipes.
I only realised how unusual smoking pipes is these days when I saw a guy who looked about 25 with one last week.
I was out walking the dog and actually did a double take while thinking, "Oooh, I've not seen one of those for years.
Gave me a little warm feeling as it reminded me of my DGF.

BarbaraofSevillle · 10/06/2019 14:39

I think pipe smoking is still popular in other countries. A good portion of the tobacco on sale at Billund airport is pipe tobacco and a Russian woman I met on an activity last year smoked a pipe. She was probably in her 30s or 40s.

Those little swinging ornaments. The dolphin one that swung back and forward through a hoop.

I never see children french skipping anymore. I got mine to do it and they loved it and sadly we were sometimes met with stupid remarks about them doing it but they absolutely loved it.
There’s something quite joyful about skipping and french skipping to me is a delight.

Actually now I have googled it there aren’t any photos so perhaps I got it wrong in calling it french skipping but that’s what we called it when I was young, I’m sure!

ZiggyB · 10/06/2019 15:54

Soola yes I bought some elastic skipping ropes for DD for this but I couldn’t remember any of the songs we used to sing or what she was supposed to do Confused so that was a waste of time.

I just googled elastic skipping and it’s all there!! Who knew.

I remember when I moved to Yorkshire (God’s own county) in the mid 90s.
Even though I’d moved from Manchester I’d not seen Warburtons bread before

Embassy coupons
Older ladies asking you to pop to the shop for them.
Various coloured Venetian blinds, I was so so jealous of a friend who had these!
Counting how many new registration cars you found at the beginning of September.

Soola · 10/06/2019 16:34

@jennymanara
The skipping I know as french skipping is where two of you hold hands behind your backs in a crossed over fashion and you skip along the road!

Mine a boy and a girl loved doing it. Idiot adults told my son he shouldn’t be skipping like a girl! Luckily my children are like me and very confident so my son wasn’t bothered by these remarks.

Yes, yuppie desk toys. There was that one that was a load of metal balls on strings too.

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 16:36

Warburton’s head office is in Bolton. I’m from the NW so used to seeing their bread everywhere.

SwimmerGirl40 · 10/06/2019 16:38

@MrsTommyBanks
I haven’t seen anyone smoking a pipe for years but have recently seen a few hipster types doing it.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 10/06/2019 16:44

Thelwell Ponies...my dentist as a child had one on the ceiling you could look at while being treated.

Mine too. Was this some niche dentistry thing or did we use the same dentist I wonder?

ALongHardWinter · 10/06/2019 17:10

Reins on toddlers. They were an absolute godsend when my DD was a toddler (in the early 80s). But I can't remember the last time I saw a child with them on. I get the impression that they're disapproved of now,i.e. you should allow your toddler freedom to roam, not keep them on a 'lead'. Rather that than running into the road.

I have seen comments along that line and I strongly disagree with them.
I loved my toddlers being on reins as it gave them a bit of independence to explore without holding my hand all the time, which was incredibly frustrating for them but you could stop a mad dash into a road or similar in a second.
They must be due a revival!
