Haven’t seen comedy in ages. Who do you recommend?

Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey and Eddie Izzard are fab! But I think the show I enjoyed the most was Russell Howard.

HironsBirons · 07/06/2019 09:25

Kevin Bridges is brilliant in Edinburgh or Glasgow. Michael McIntyre is very good too

amusedbush · 07/06/2019 10:07

I saw Adam Hills at the Fringe a few years ago and he was brilliant. I've also seen Stephen Merchant and my face hurt from laughing.

I saw Rich Hall live recently. First half was a comedy gig. The second half he brought on a band and did comedy country songs based on the audience conversation he'd had in the first half. Very clever and fun.

Comedy is very subjective. I go to lots of comedy festivals and I find the shorter sets work really well. The best I've seen in the last 5 years were:
Stuart Lee
Aishing Bee
Tim Minchin
Ed Byrne
Alexi Sayle

Historically the two funniest things I've ever seen were Billy Connely in his prime and Bill Bailey's "Kraftwork does the Hokey Cokey" sketch

Rhod Gilbert.

Also loved a young comedian called Sam Serrano who we saw at a comedy club a few months back. He's just starting out but he was so funny.

Ivy44 · 07/06/2019 10:29

Ricky Gervais, Sarah Millican and Peter Kay.

As someone else said, try a local comedy club, maybe go mid week when they have new talent on and it’s cheap. I think our local comedy club is about £8 for new talent on a Wednesday.

Branleuse · 07/06/2019 10:47

Funniest ive seen live was probably Katherine Ryan. She was brilliant.

Some of my favourite comedians ive seen live and theyve been a real disappointment, I think because some are incredible on panel shows when bouncing off other people, but actually on a live show by themselves, it doesnt work in the same way

Damntheman · 07/06/2019 10:57

omg @branleuse how could I forget about the fabulous Katherine Ryan!

Ivy44 · 07/06/2019 11:04

Oh yes. Katherine Ryan. Also Jo Brand.

Pericombobulations · 07/06/2019 11:32

We love Ed Byrne - I have tickets to see him again next year! Really enjoyed Dave Gorman and would see him again - he picked on DH about towel buying - DH has never bought a towel in his life lol.

Also enjoyed Sarah Millican, Josh Widdicombe and Alan Davies.

Saw Rob Newman of Newman and Baddiel fame, the year after they split and his show was just his half of their show and nothing new - quite disappointing.

Billy Connerly was funny but beginning to loose his touch when we saw him sadly.

Branleuse · 07/06/2019 12:08

Rob Newman was dire. I bloody loved him as a teenager, and saw him live a few years back with Mark Thomas (brilliant) and I just could have slept through Rob Newmans bit.

StormTreader · 07/06/2019 12:20

Ed Byrne was my top show, I laughed so much I couldnt breathe, I had tears running down my face! Dylan Moran, Bill Bailey, and Dara O'Brian were also very good live.

Flantastico · 07/06/2019 12:30

Like gigis I found Paul Foot absolutely hilarious. Poor DH could hardly breathe for laughing that night.
Another favourite of mine is Simon Evans, who has spawned a number of catchphrases in the Flantastico household Grin

Wellthatwastricky · 07/06/2019 13:16

Like a lot of the above PP, I have seen Bill Bailey quite a few times in the last decade and think he is wonderful, but the show I saw last year was the least enjoyable. Probably still my favourite though, along with Dylan Moran.

Saw Miles Jupp at the Comedy Store long before he was famous and he was excellent.

Biggest disappointments were Ross Noble about 8 years ago - got shirty when there was a technical fault and really rude about the crew. He came across as unpleasant. Eddie Izzard about ten years ago at Wembley, felt the magic had gone.

I've not seen Rich Hall but everyone says how good he is - he and Tim Minchin are on my hit list.

Excitedforxmas · 07/06/2019 14:52

Paul Smith too from Liverpool comedy club was hilarious

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 07/06/2019 16:04

Dylan Moran was the funniest night of my life. I adore him. Many many catchphrases used even now ‘Is it a Nun? Catch her, fry her in sugar!’

Bill Bailey was sheer genius!

Rich Hall was incredible. So dry. Amazing songs.

Joe Lycett was unexpectedly hysterical.

The only let down for me was Michael McIntyre but that’s mostly because of the huge venue. I was so far away I watched him on a screen.

Feilin · 07/06/2019 16:10

Foil arms and hog were great when we saw them last yr

Ted27 · 07/06/2019 16:13

Dave Gorman
Sarah Millican

no one else has mentioned Mark Thomas

tardyheart · 07/06/2019 16:29

I saw Bill Bailey recently at his Larks on Tour, quite a smallish venue. I went with someone else who had been given tickets & wouldn't say I was really a fan. But he was fantastic, really hilarious, intelligent, quick witted. I was very impressed and properly belly laughed loads of times. The music was brilliant too.

DareDevil223 · 07/06/2019 16:41

Stewart Lee, by a mile. I've seen him several times and wept my mascara off every time. Mark Thomas was fantastic as well (and totally lovely to talk to).

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2019 16:56

Has anyone mentioned Mark Steele?

BertrandRussell · 07/06/2019 16:56

Oh,and John Robins.

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 07/06/2019 17:00

Most recently was Kiri Pritchard McLean doing her show victim, complex.
I laughed and cried, she was brilliant.

Alan Carr years ago, I almost had to leave it was hurting to laugh!

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 07/06/2019 17:04

Oh and I love Sofie Hagan. She’s very funny live

theydontknowweknow · 07/06/2019 17:04

Sarah Millican and John Bishop for me, both were hilarious!
