Trunk found in new house!

WBWIFE · 02/06/2019 22:48

So we have found a trunk in the loft of our new house..

Its addressed to someone to a boys school that was open in the 1940-1960s.

I'm so intrigued, its bigger than the loft hatch so think we will need to cut it out of the hatch before plastering.

Ideas what to do with it? Use for decorative purposes? I've saw some turned into coffee tables! Or I may use it for toy storage, I love it!

Was it this knapp house in Devon?
www.knapphouselodges.co.uk/history - sounds intriguing if it was

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 03/06/2019 09:17

we found a locked trunk in our attic, waited till DD1 got back from school to let her and DD2 open it together (they were expecting treasure), only to find it was boringly empty.

It was too big to come down through the hatch (so no idea how it got up there in the first place), so when we sold the house recently, we just left it there for the new owners.

steppemum · 03/06/2019 09:53

I hate to be boring, but I went to boarding school and had a trunk. It was in fact my mum's trunk from university.
When not used for school, it went onto the loft and mum kept her old curtains in it.
It is now in my loft with assorted junk in it.

It will be empty.

TheJoxter · 03/06/2019 10:03

MyVisionsComeFromSoup you should have hidden an odd selection of things in it for the new owners to try and work out! Messages written in code, blurry photos that look like they could be exciting, etc

WBWIFE · 03/06/2019 10:12

@Moondancer73 yes that's it

@steppemum I dont think anyone has actually ready my post because I didnt make it about what is in the box, I made it about what should I use this nice trunk for?

Everyone else wants to know what's in it, I just like the look of it lol

It'll make a fab coffee table/storage box @WBWIFE. I have a similar one bought off Ebay, not found in loft and I keep my Christmas tree decorations in it.

I have protected a label on mine with some thin, rigid plastic btw.

steppemum · 03/06/2019 10:47

WBWIFE - it is a much nicer and older/more characterful trunk than mine ever was.

You need some restorer (you know the sort of thing they use on 'Repair Shop' or 'Money for nothing' where they rub it on and the grotty old item glows with colour and life!!)
clean it and oil it/treat it to bring the colour out, and then get a glass top for it.
the top of trunks doesn't do well as a coffee table, not flat, and marks too easily, you'll need a glass/perspect top for it.

Or use it at the end of a bed as a blanket box.
Just be careful I always had bruises on my legs from the catches which stick out.

@LoafofSellotape "These threads are always disappointing"

I know but if we learned anything last night, it is to have HOPE.

Anyway, my guess is some fur coats, a sword, and 2 choc-ices.

Owlish · 03/06/2019 10:49

OP will open the trunk, to find only a note with the words 'You have just lost The Game'. And so has anyone who reads this Grin

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 03/06/2019 10:52

Following because I need to know what's in it.

You're going to open it today, right?

Bluebluered · 03/06/2019 11:45

UPDATE: OP DOESNT WANT TO OPEN THE TRUNK.

FoxSquadKitten · 03/06/2019 11:46

Gaaaaah 🤦‍♀️

Katinski · 03/06/2019 12:17

As I've been contributing to the Boarding School thread and we've been talking about our trunks, I'm strangely interested in the contents too. My guess is some pine cones, tissue paper, brown wrapping paper, and Precious Pebbles. My School was as far away from the sea as you can get(possibly)but any stripey pebbles were a swappable commodityConfused Great for hopscotch games. Ah, those simple pleasures of by-gone daysGrin

Andylion · 03/06/2019 12:24

The Changeling

Agreed. This movie is excellent. Not to be confused with the Angelina Jolie film of the same name.

AdoreTheBeach · 03/06/2019 12:47

Hi OP

As this is bigger than the hatch, the possible uses for it are limited unless you take it apart (which would ruin it) so as to fit through the hatch. Not sure it’s worth creating a larger hatch just to take it down.

Therefore, emptying it and using it for breakables/keepsakes you’d like to keep and ensure don’t get broken.

If you could get it down/out of the hatch, they do make very interesting coffee tables with great storage inside. You could also have the top upholstered to not only be a coffee table/storage, but also a footstool/coffee table storage option.

For children’s toys, having someone fit appropriate hinges to avoid smashed little fingers would be a good idea.

Is it possible you could please share with us the contents, put us out of our misery of anticipation?

MatthewBramble · 03/06/2019 12:53

If you're a fan of the ghost stories of M R James, you'll leave it well alone!

WBWIFE · 03/06/2019 13:30

@AdoreTheBeach we will be making the hatch bigger as its ridiculously small and in a really shit place for a ladder, we hit our backs on kitchen door architraves as we climb it!

We arent at the house tonight unfortunately but will be tomorrow in the day, its DH birthday tomorrow so I'll ensure he opens it in case theres a few thousand is hiding in there haha

Oh come ON OP. You said in your OP "I'm so intrigued!" So don't tell us you only care about what it bloody looks like.

WBWIFE · 03/06/2019 13:36

@HennyPennyHorror intrigued about the history not the contents!

bobstersmum · 03/06/2019 13:41

No one in their right mind would not be interested in what was in a very old trunk found in their loft, so op are you crazy or is this not real?

AdoraBell · 03/06/2019 13:46

I could not resist opening that, or googling the name on the label

If you can get it down from the loft would it work as a coffee table OP?

BenWillbondsPants · 03/06/2019 13:58

I'm stupidly excited about finding out what's in the box!

I'd have that trunk pride of place in my living room as a table of something, I love it.

WBWIFE · 03/06/2019 14:16

@bobstersmum I attached photos and I said when we picked it up it didnt feel like there was anything in there unless it's some papers or something! The trunk is heavy but I think that's the actual trunk being heavy!

OP posts:
WBWIFE · 03/06/2019 14:21

@BenWillbondsPants I love it too!

@AdoraBell I googled the address and it's an old boys school post war. It's now a guest house and I messaged the owners as they're organising a reunion for the old boys they call them! They said they're not in touch with a mr b perrott but they will ask around to see what's happened to him if anyone remembers him! Exciting! They sent me some photos too

Hmmm I find an intriguing old trunk, do I try and open it or post on mn? 🤔
